@Mrs. Jump Rope: @Mae: THANK YOU! I finally figured it out, after months of looking at the same data over and over. I put it into a spreadsheet and colored everything green or red, then sorted the categories because there are features about a CI you can never change (like the internal device or the company) and features you'll end up changing periodically (like external pieces). They say you should never choose based on external technology, and I realized one of the two I was seriously considering had all of their advantages in the external pieces. That makes it so much easier.

I'd make a list of all the pros and cons of each choice. Then I'd try to decide the worst option so I could knock it down to two. Then I'd see if there was a clear winner on pros/cons between the two. If not I would defer to DH if he had an opinion on better/worse (in general whichever of us feels more strongly about something gets to decide... so if I felt like it was a hard choice and he felt like he was confident in one-- we'd go with that). If he also did not have a strong feeling one way or the other I'd take comfort in the fact that neither choice is wrong. Then I'd just pick one by any scrap of info that would blow me one way or the other.

@spaniellove: research! Reviews! Case studies! Data! If I can't make a decision, I usually turn to data & let numbers do the talking.

@spaniellove: Oh geez I don't even know how I'd make a decision for which manufacturer to choose. I'd probably first read 238972359 things online about it.

After that I guess I'd just try and pick which one has the least amount of cons, or has the features I think are most important... then I'd hope for the best.

ETA: Does the doctor prefer one?

@sorrycharlie: Yes, we have LO's cochlear implant surgery booked and need to commit to a manufacturer for sure now. It's a tough decision though because once it's in we hope not to be taking it out!

I try to think, "how will my choice affect me in a week / in a year / in 5 years" type of thing. However, if it's something you know the outcome of already, I'm not sure if it'll help? Hope everything is ok!

Tell me...if you had to choose between three things, and the choice you make will possibly affect your child's life forever. Or for a very long time, assuming nothing goes horribly wrong. All three get you to the same goal in the end but they each have different drawbacks and benefits and you don't know which will turn out to be most important as your child gets older.

What approach do you tend to take in making decisions?
