Thanks everyone for the feedback! I'm on day 5 now and am hoping I'll be in the camp of those that have been happy with it. I'm still bleeding and have had back/abdominal pain and am keeping my fingers crossed that this will go away soon!

I've had it for about a year. It took 4-5 months for the spotting to stop, but now I love it. The spotting was really light and didn't even need a liner. I have a "period" about every other month, but I only need a liner for about two days with that. I haven't gained any weight. I've actually been quite happy with my sex drive for the first time in forever, but that might have more to do with the kids sleeping than my BC choice. Good luck! Clearly it's different for everyone, but the googling definitely scared me beforehand. In real life, I've heard more positives than negatives.

I had it after my first dd was born for just about 3 years, not only did I not lose my pregnancy weight I gained an additional 30lbs... then it randomly decided to give me full blown pregnancy symptoms, bloated belly, nausea, colostrum the whole 10 yards. I removed it and decided we were ready for #2 then within the month I was pregnant. Definitely won't be doiing that again!

I've had mine for a year and a half and I like it now. The first few weeks were awful for me. Super cramps and period like bleeding. When that settled I had spotting probably 75 to 80 % of the time during the first 6-8 months. Totally sucked. Then for a few months after that it was still spotty but not as much. The spotting finally stopped after like 13 months. Now I get a "period" for like a day and hopefully that will stop. Leading up to that day I get some serious PMS symptoms I never used to get (super sore boobs, mood swings) but that's currently my only complaint now. Some months I don't even have my period at all. Definitely not doing it again! But since the tough stuff has passed I like it now.

I've had one after each pregnancy. The first time zero complaints, I had no periods, lost the baby weight and then some, my sex drive was low but also related to PPD/meds. This time, a lot more spotting and some cystic acne so not as thrilled. Ultimately I will probably keep it another 3.5 years but I hope DH will get snipped then if we are done for sure.

I had mine for just over two years after we had LO1. I loved it at the time, spotted for about two months but then no periods until I had it removed. Got pregnant easily after having it removed. Didn't notice any mood changes while I had it. However, I do think it affected my sex drive and comfort during sex so I am really not sure what we will do next time. Hopefully BC will still be free w/health insurance at that time because otherwise it will be a tough decision for me! Everything else about it was the bomb.com for me.

I do think you need to give it a couple of months before deciding anything but I definitely think every person reacts to it differently. Just like regular BCPs make some people crazy and other people have the opposite effect!

I got mine 8 weeks post-partum and have had it for about 8 months now. I've always been on the fence about it.

Pros:
- Like not having to think about it (especially as we are done with kids now).
- Like not having periods (although I didn't get a period until 11 months post-partum with LO1, so this may have nothing to do with it)

Cons:
- I spot at least 2x per month
- I still get PMS-like symptoms all the time (more often than I would if I were getting a period), and mine are really bad
- My sex drive is shot

My OB said to wait 6 months and my PCP said to wait 9 months before making any decisions about it. I think I will actually wait until I am done breastfeeding because I feel like my hormones are weird from that too. But I hate the PMS symptoms so much that I've been tempted many times to just get it out and get normal periods again.

I've had Mirena for almost a year and I'm just starting to like it. I cramped and spotted for months. It was annoying. Everything is starting to feel regulated just this last cycle and I haven't had any random spotting. My periods are super light (like only need to wear a liner).

I am not experiencing any weight gain. I'm at my normal weight and haven't gained anything.

I am over 35, so my bc choices are limited. Until my husband is ready to go forward with his vasectomy, this is our best option.

I loved mine and plan to absolutely have another put in after DD is born. No periods and I had it at a time when I was working on weight loss and it did not interfere with my losing 30lbs through healthy diet, exercise and long term lifestyle changes. I also noticed much better mood consistency, though I can't credit it for sure and could also be the exercise effect. But just its effectiveness with no effort and not worrying about getting a period was worth it!

@hellobeeboston: Prior to my pregnancy I had the Paragard. I did take bc pills before that, but I don’t remember ever having the same issues as I did with the mirena.

As far as the trouble losing weight, I continued to breastfeed for six months after removing the mirena and the weight dropped as soon as I got it out, so in my case the weight was not related to breastfeeding.

I had a Mirena in for 5 years pre-baby and loved it - no periods, no side effects, and no weight gain. I had a Skyla put in 12wks PP and while I didn't have any side effects, I would have regular periods plus an extra week of spotting every month. Not sure if it was the difference between the two that caused that or just a pre-baby vs post-baby thing, but having extra bleeding every month was super annoying. I had my Skyla taken out in May (we're TTC #2) and the spotting disappeared immediately.

Have you considered Skyla? It is made by the same company as Mirena, but has a smaller dose of hormones and will only last for 3 years. I had a Mirena after #1 and struggled with lots of spotting and cramping for the first three months, but then was very happy with it and able to lose 30lbs at one point. I got the Skyla after #2 because the plan is for DH to get a vasectomy and I wanted to encourage that to happen sooner than later.

Regarding weight loss, I was never able to lose significant weight while nursing, but lost the 30lbs with relatively little effort (diet and very mild exercise) after I stopped. In my case it was the nursing and not the IUD that made the weight stay on.

I've had Mirena after both kids, placed around 8-9 weeks postpartum. The first time, I spotted for about a week and then had one period the entire 18 months I had it in. No problems with weight loss that weren't due to my maternity leave kit kat habit. This time around, I spotted for a month after it was placed, which was mildly annoying. No issues with weight gain or sex drive (at least so far at 13 weeks PP).

I got my Mirena about a year and a half ago, when DD was 8 weeks.

I have had no issues. Its been very easy. I love having no real period.

My only complaints are:
1) Spotting - I dont ever actually have to wear a tampon, tho I will randomly have a legit amount of blood when I wipe. So this summer it had me nervous wearing white/light colors. I suppose there is some regularity to it I should track - but its like literally 1 or 2 bathroom trips a month that this happens...so it feels very "random"
2) I hadnt connected the two...but I have been really struggling to lose weight...like really. Going to have to give this some more though.

I’ve had 2 and will most likely (like 99% chance lol) get another when this one needs to be replaced at the end of the year. I haven’t had a lot of issues with them - - outside of spotting for the first several months, which sucks, BUT then after the spotting goes away I stop getting my period basically all together so taken all in it’s a fine trade off. The best thing for me about Mirena is that there is literally NOTHING to think about or do. I don’t have to remember to do anything. I don’t have to time anything or calculate anything or avoid anything.

I talked to my OB about Mirena and weight gain and loss because after LO I had a hard time losing the weight. She said she doesn’t believe there is any correlation between weight and Mirena that can’t instead be better attributed to other causes, like lifestyle changes/diet. That said, of course I believe that some people may be impacted, no device is the same for everyone. I guess I just wouldn’t necessarily put too much stock in online reviews, since a lot of people want an easy-out (and an easy fix) to weight loss struggles. Having a Mirena in didn’t stop me from being able to lose the 30+ pounds that stubbornly hung on after LO was born.

I got my one for the first time about ten weeks after baby 2 was born. Some of the side effects are annoying- mainly, tons of spotting for the first six months, and now over a year later I feel like I still have more spotting than I would otherwise. I had some of that foggy feeling others have mentioned but I think that was PPD, not mirena, and it’s gone away now. And- I’m not pregnant, which is the big thing! It is so nice to not have to think about it at all!

I haven’t lost quite as much weight as I did between babies but I think that has more to do with lifestyle change (walking everywhere with one baby in the city vs driving with two kids in the burbs, less time and energy to plan healthy meals and relying on convenience foods a little too often).

I’m pro mirena for sure! BUT if I was planning on trying for another anytime soon I would hesitate since I anecdotally know some people who took a while to get pregnant after it.

Also had one in postpartum and had it removed 6 months later because I spotted every single day and some days was more like an actual period. It got old VERY fast! But I've heard great things from others so I think it really depends on your body and your hormones, I wish it had worked for me!

I had mine for about a year and hated it, although it didn't affect my ability to lose weight. I started Atkins while I was on the Mirena and was able to drop weight very easily on that diet.

But it did seriously affect my sex drive. Not only was it really difficult to even get in the mood, it made me feel pretty numb and enjoying sex was almost impossible. But I think I'm in the minority for that side effect.

I’ll be the dissenter, got mine at seven weeks postpartum and ended up having it removed about six months after. I was breastfeeding but could not lose the baby weight, once I got the mirena out I dropped it very quickly. I’m positive it prevented me from losing weight. Worse though were the other side effects. I had absolutely zero sex drive, like the thought of sex was actually repulsive. I also felt like mentally I just sort of floated in a fog, I felt detached and slow and anxious and depressed. It was awful but I attributed most of that to having had a baby. Until I got mirena out and it cleared right up.

For me the hormones just did not work and had poor side effects, everyone is different though!

Lovvvve mine! I got it at 7 months PP and other than some spotting with insertion, I'm 2y3m PP and still no period  I don't think I've had any weight gain with mine. My sex drive isn't the highest, but honestly it's never been and with 2 young kids and working no wonder it's low...
Edited to say I sort of regretted it immediately after I had it put in because I was so crampy but within a week I loved it!

I had one pre-LO for 3 years and had another placed post partum. I had the second one for 2 years until we decided to TTC #2. I had a good experience both times. Unless I can be convinced that something else would be better I will do another one once this LO arrives. I had some spotting after placement the second time but after that no periods, which I enjoy! I don’t think it affected my weight.

I just had the Mirena put in on Monday and am having some major buyers remorse! My biggest fear is weight gain (I'm trying to lose about 15lbs) and it seems that I've seen much more in terms of negative reviews than positive.

Tell me what you think about it, please!
