@pachamama: I tried Celexa for a bit, it just made me soooooo tired; where Zoloft didn't do much to me. I would definitely talk to someone about trying a different med because your side effects sound pretty extreme.

@gotkimchi: I don't have a psychiatrist, technically my midwife wrote the latest rx. My therapist guides me on this stuff and has been talking about Effexor, Wellbutrin and Celexa but they sound even more problematic than Zoloft...

Update. It's been about two and a half weeks of taking Sertraline and I'm way worse than I was before. I started at 25, went to 50 and couldn't orgasm so I went back to 25. My anxiety, depression and restlessness has spiked and it's almost uncontrollable. I feel super trapped. I'm in contact with my therapist who's monitoring me but I really feel like this is not normal. I cannot do six more weeks of this or however long it takes to work.
Not sleeping well, decreased appetite, anxiety, despondency, agitation, forgetfulness are my main symptoms and they are increasing in severity.
My OB prescribed and she's no expert so I feel like it's pointless to call her.
Is this really how it is these early weeks? I read this is normal but it seems very extreme and I'm not functioning well at all.

I just saw a post on Instagram that of course I can’t find now, that said something along the lines of

“Women don’t know that they are depressed or anxious. They just think they need to try harder.”

That really resonated with me.

@Mrs. Cereal: I wish I would feel nothing, honestly. Everything upsets me, I can't watch the news, can't read most books. I'm emotionally fragile to the point of breaking daily. But I do see what you're saying. I'm EBF my 4 month old which I feel super guilty about, but I'm sick of fake smiling and hiding in my room as soon as my husband gets home.

I started zoloft about a year after my second child was born. Honestly for me, I thought that maybe I was just weak minded and that a medication was unnecessary, I just needed to try harder. But when I did go on the medication, once I had evened out, I saw significant changes. I realize now that I had a constant level of anxiety for most of my life and the medication allows me to relax from that. My mind isn't always racing and trying to prevent doom, which means I can spend my time doing other things.

I did gain quite a bit of weight since starting it, but I think that is a combo of my age and the meds. I recently switched from zoloft to lexapro and I think it was a good switch because I am able to feel more emotions than I had been experiencing on zoloft. I didn't even realize that I had missed laughing, it just never occurred to me that the medication, while helping me immensely, was also suppressing some of the good emotional stuff. So keep that in mind, you don't want to feel nothing, you want to be more even in your emotions and responses to things.

@pachamama: lots of love to you. I have been on it for a month (started at 25mg for a few days then moved to 50) and I feel soooo much better. Like I should have done this a long time ago. I didn’t have many side effects besides extreme sleepiness at first. Anyway I hope it works for you and you feel better soon.

I didn’t comment before but reading this thread helped me make the decision to give Zoloft a try. @Silva: your comments and perspective was especially helpful so thank you for that.

Welp, after hitting mental rock bottom because if PPD/ unwarranted anxiety over my kids health, I decided to start on Zoloft today. 25mg for a week then 50. I already have stomach issues, my heart is racing and I'm dreading the insomnia I'm sure I'll have for a while but I owe it to my family to give it a try.
Thank you all for your perspective. It helped a lot. Fingers crossed I can get some joy back in my life and stop worrying every single second of every day.

My vote is to try it for a month. If it doesn't help after you've given it a solid try, then quit.

. While I haven't taken it, my mom has moderate anxiety and chooses not to medicate. Having grown up in that household, I would encourage meds. I see how it manifests when she visits and it really causes so much unnecessary stress. It makes the house so much more intense and J feeds off of the energy. He's so much harder to deal with when my mom is bad compared to when her anxiety is under control.

Something to keep in mind - you can so easily get off of this drug. They may wean you a bit to reduce side effects, but most likely you'd be just fine. If you feel like it may help, it can't hurt to try. If it doesn't work for you, you can just stop! Obviously talk to your Doctor, but this doesn't have to be a forever thing. People go on and off all the time as life changes and I'm sure your Doctor could reassure you how normal that is.

@DesertDreams88: This is so me too.

Have been on varying doses of Zoloft for 4 years now (currently 50 mgs). It has been a huge help (along with therapy) in making me better able to handle the ups and downs of daily life without having my thoughts spiral into total panic/anxiety mode. I BF two kids on it and took it all through my second pregnancy. I do have some sexual side effects, little harder to reach O, and decreased libido (but I think some of that is also Mirena and 2 small kids).

Good luck figuring out what's best for you.

@pachamama: Honestly the asshole comment has crossed my mind multiple times in relation to myself. Basically the zoloft help me not feel a like I was close to losing my shit all the time and being aggravated by everyone around me. A lot of my anxiety centers around things not being optimal/the way they should be, things out of my control, etc.

@pachamama: So I am on lexapro not Zoloft so take with a grain of salt. But my experience has been life changing. On it I feel 100% normal. Take it away and it does downhill fast. On the orgasm front my doctor told me, if you can still do it great, even if your desire to start is less. If you CANT do it no matter what we should adjust your meds. FWIW.

I have severe anxiety and some tendency towards depressive episodes. I do therapy and have tried multiple kinds of SSRIs. I started on Zoloft, finding it very helpful, but not enough. Only side effects were brain fog and headaches when starting, stopping, or adjusting dosage (no sexual effects on this drug for me). I then tried two others, which were more helpful for my symptoms but caused a semi serious reaction where my blood didn't clot properly. So I returned to the Zoloft and just did a higher dose, which was somewhat helpful.

I did breastfeed on all these and didn't note any effect.

This is how it affects me: I still have most of the same anxious thoughts, but my body doesn't have an anxious response. That part disappeared. The thoughts still cross my mind, but I can view them in a more matter-of-fact way since they aren't often making my heart race, chest tighten, etc.

I totally felt like an asshole when I was going through PPD. Especially towards my husband. Being on Zoloft has made certain things way more tolerable and affected me less, in turn I’m less of an asshole.

I wouldn’t judge the sexual side effects until you know for sure. I know they’re common but I have not had an issue with that. (Also 8 weeks pp!!!....gurl I didn’t even have sex until I weaned at 11 months!!! High five to you!)
