@Woolly Mammoth: this was exactly my labor with my second. I'm not sure why the second didn't want to come out, but my doc also said I'm a great candidate for a vbac since I've previously had one vaginally. It was basically a fluke this time, is how I understood it.

With my first, I had a Foley catheter placed at 40 weeks exactly as an outpatient procedure due to expected big size. It fell out before I went in to the hospital, and my OB gave me the choice to do an automatic c section, do pitocin and continue the induction, or go home and wait. I chose to wait and had him vaginally at 40+4.

My failed induction was pretty different from most that I've read about. I was induced at 41 weeks for low fluid/rising blood pressure/protein in urine.

I was maybe one centimeter dilated, so the plan was for my cervix to be manually dilated by a Cook's catheter overnight, then we would move on to pitocin in the morning to get labor started.

I started having regular contractions not long after the catheter was placed, so we never moved on to pitocin.

From the beginning, LO was not handling the contractions well. My hospital-based midwives let you get out of bed and have intermittent monitoring if you get a good twenty-minute strip of the baby's heart rate. I never got a good strip, so I was stuck in bed with the nurses moving me around to try to alleviate any pressure on the cord that might be causing the problem. I was trying to sleep because I thought we might be there a few days.

My water broke after about six hours, so they removed the catheter. The midwife tried reintroducing sterile fluid into my uterus to try to relieve any pressure on the cord, but it didn't make a difference.

I spoke to the attending OB three times. The first two times she said that this looked like a C-section, but that it wasn't an emergency and we could keep trying to see if anything changed. The third time, she said that his heart rate was getting worse and she was now recommending that we have a C-section. I had five contractions between the decision to have the C-section and getting my spinal in the operating room.

The C-section went great, LO was healthy, and the OB and the midwife both said that I'm a great VBAC candidate (I dilated to six centimeters by the end). I don't know if I will try for a VBAC or if I will have a RCS though.

I had a failed induction with my first at 38 and 5. Three days including a foley balloon, pitocin, constant monitoring and constant contractions that didn't do anything. It was miserable. I asked to be sent home because my blood pressure had stabilized on bed rest and I went into labor on my own about 8 hours after I was discharged.

My friend had a failed induction in that she went to the hospital to be induced and the Pitocin just didn't work on her. They sent her home after about 12 hours and tried again about 4 days later. The Pitocin failed to do much again and she ended up with a C-section.

Mine"failed" once I didn't dilate past 5cm and LO's heart rate was rising. We tried for vaginal for 57 hours, 35 of those without meds and none of them with any sleep.
Big sister was sunny side up, 10+ pounds with a 100% head.
I don't regret the c-section at all. :silly: I should say my ladybits don't regret it.

I never really looked into failed inductions until I had it myself.

Tell me about your failed induction. I'm assuming no one knew they were going to have one until they did. (Unless you had one before and have a higher risk of having another one.)

My twin pregnancy ended up being a failed induction. My PPROM or water broke (minor leak) at 28 weeks. I was on hospital bed rest until I went into labor. Luckily, I managed to keep the babies in until 6 weeks later when I was scheduled to be induced at 34 weeks. At the time of the induction, I was 4cm dilated and 100% effaced. I felt no pain. A few hours later, at 5 cm, I got the epidural because I wanted to make sure I was awake if I had a c-section. About 12 hours later, with lots of pitocin, I only got to 6 cm. It was determined that I wouldn't dilate any more. They think my uterus might have been already tired from my water breaking weeks before (maybe I had been contracting for the past 6 weeks). It was also mentioned that maybe I had an undetectable infection. I could have waited it out but I was tired and there was a small spike in temperature so we proceeded with a c-section.

Oh, at the beginning of the induction, both babies were head down and both OBs on call that weekend were ok with doing a breach extraction. So I think I had a good chance of a vaginal delivery for one or both. I was a tiny bit sad that I couldn't do a vaginal birth but looking back, I have no regrets. I was ready and prepared for anything to happen in my twin pregnancy.

Tell me about your failed induction.
