@SouthPaw: I had a sub chorionic hematoma between the placenta and uterine wall. I was told that most of the time they are either reabsorbed into your body or you have some spotting. I had neither, mine stuck around (staying the same size) at least until my anatomy scan, if not later (my last U/S was at 21 wks).

It was recommended that I abstain from exercise besides walking, as well as sex. When they said it was still there but hadn't grown at my NT scan they scaled back those recommendations to light exercise.

It seems pretty normal. Enjoy being off of your feet and stay away from Dr Google! Good luck!

Mine was at 5 weeks and was transvaginal too, all they could see was a yolk sac and they warned us of that. We went back two weeks later and saw her heartbeat.

@SouthPaw: Yay! I know from the extensive research I did in early pregnancy (when I spotted for 2+ weeks) that bleeding around the sac is common and usually just goes away on its own. Is it an SCH? Glad you got to see the heartbeat and take it easy for now!

I had my first ultrasound last night!!!!

I was totaly prepared for a transvaginal ultrasound, but then i got an abdominal ultrasound instead! And I'd prepped DH about the vaginal part and everything, which was not necessary after all.

It's probably because I'm already 8 weeks, 4 days. But we saw the heartbeat, which she said looked great, and we got pictures of our little bean. I got teary-eyed (no suprise there), and basically she said everything looked great!

mine was also transvag, although they did not tell me that when I made the appointment, so like PPs I would go in expecting it anyway! I thought I was 7weeks exactly (based on LMP) but they dated me at 6w4d at the scan, and we saw but didn't hear the heartbeat. still amazing though!

Alright ladies! Had my first ultrasound and everything went well!!! The heartbeat was strong and growth was showing a couple of days ahead =)

There is some bleeding around the sac which has me on modified bed rest? But the Dr. said it should not increase the risk of MC... anyone here have that before? Going back in 3 weeks to follow up. Overall though positive appt!!

Our first was at 8 weeks on the nose. DH came with me. The tech did both an abdominal and a transvaginal. For the latter he had a female nurse come in, and he positioned the wand close to my vaginal opening but had me actually insert it, then took it back to move it around. He took measurements of the baby and told us how fast the heart rate was. In addition to taking pictures (and short videos!) for me to take home (on a CD), he always looked at my ovaries and kidneys.

The whole thing took maybe 20 minutes from start to finish. I wasn't able to see as much as I wanted (he had the screen at a weird angle from me), but he turned it a couple of times so I could see and explained what we were looking at...and because he could move around DH was able to see everything.

And ditto to the PPs about bringing/wearing a panty liner. I didn't think about that before hand, and felt icky until we got home.

ETA: For some reason (we were told why at the time but I was too overwhelmed with everything to remember) we were not able to HEAR the heartbeat that day, but we could SEE it. We didn't hear it until our first official visit with our midwife two weeks later, with a doppler.

I was super nervous. All I wanted was for them to find a healthy heartbeat and for everything to look okay. I was 8 weeks at the time. DH went with me. Because it was early, they did a transvaginal one, which is . . . kind of awkward but fine. Then they saw one baby and casually told us there was more than one baby. Everything after that was a little fuzzy. :-)

@tororojo: Agreed on the excessive amount of lube! I had a transvaginal done last month because it'd been over 9 months since we've started TTC and I remember using multiple toilet paper to clean up and still had leakage!!

Mine was at 8 weeks and they were able to do it abdominally, so no creepy sex toy ultrasound for me. I was worried beforehand that something would be wrong, but also super excited to see our baby. It was so cool to get that first glimpse. DH came with me and I think that was the first time it really sank in for him that we were having a baby. We got to hear the heartbeat and got some pictures to take home too. I loved getting ultrasounds!

I was VERY nervous at our first ultrasound but it wasn't a typical one at all! I had bleeding early on, around 5 weeks, so I had called my doctor's office (I didn't have an appointment until about 6 weeks) and the midwife said I could certainly come in and get an ultrasound for peace of mind, but to understand that if I was miscarrying, there wasn't anything they could do, and it might even be too early to see anything at all. I chose to go in -- she was right, it was too early for a heartbeat, but they did see an egg sac and the beginnings of the fetal pole and therefore, most importantly to me, were able to tell it was not an ectopic pregnancy. (I had bad implantation pain and that combined with the bleeding, I feared the worst on that count.)

I went back again at 6 weeks for my regular appointment, and we saw the embryo already and a heartbeat! It was so amazing. But also nerve wracking because my bleeding had continued and intensified. So they had me back again one week later and by then my bleeding had completely stopped and baby had already grown a bunch. They weren't ever able to find a cause of bleeding -- there was no subchorionic hemorrhage or anything -- so just chalked it up to me being a bleeder ;)

To me, each ultrasound has just been amazing. DH has been in every single one, and they've always given me pictures and pointed out things and told me what was going on (it's a radiologist at my doctor's office so she's qualified to interpret things to me).

Good luck and have fun with it!

Told my one boss today and he was excited for me :). I think I'm causing myself more stress trying to keep it a secret. I'm going to try holding out telling anyone else at work until after the holidays/the appointment.

@.twist.: I had a transvaginal one once (not preg related, I bruised my kidney) and it was a total surprise. Not at all a pleasant surprise, but also not uncomfortable, just weird. At least going to an OB you expect your lady parts will be looked at, I just thought they were going to look at my kidneys from outside- surprise!

My very first one was at 5wk due to spotting and we only saw the sac. But, my next one was at 8 weeks and we saw our 'blob' and heard and saw the heart beat.
Both were vaginal ultrasounds and DH was there with me.

Transvag and DH came--I think we could hear the heartbeat? It was pretty early, like 6-7 weeks and just looked like a circle. The wand looks like a huge sex toy but doesn't hurt, it's just weird and not comfortable when they move it around trying to see all of your insides.

Warning: they put a ridiculous amount of lube on the US wand and you will leak a ton of it out afterward. Wear a liner or bring extra panties!

Personally, I was nervous at EVERY appointment until the part where they would get out their Doppler and listen to the heartbeat! I had no reason to worry but that was always so reassuring.

Ours was 7w4d. It was a transvaginal and baby looked like a little gummy bear. We didn't get to hear the heartbeat but we did get to see it flickering away on the screen. Even though he didn't look like a baby, it was amazing to see that there was in fact a baby in there! Oh and depending on how far along you are you may see a little circle that is the baby's yolk sac.

I had my first at 5 weeks 5 days and was literally sobbing in the waiting room because I was so nervous. It was a transvaginal ultrasound and it was too early to see heartbeats but we were able to see the sac/yolk, which was reassuring. Good luck!
