@meganmp: Great. Good to know there are other options for long term storage.

@ineebee: 1) Do you know how much it actually costs to keep your embryos frozen? $660 for three years, so $220 per year when you do a three year freeze. We had ours transferred to long term storage, so they're actually in Colorado at Cryogam. They accept embryos from all over, so you might be able to get in on that if it ends up being cheaper for you. http://www.cryogam.com/#!storage-pricing/c1da6

2) Do you know if insurance is covering it? If so, for how long? Nope, it's all us.

3) Any plans or hopes or thoughts about your frozen embryos you'd like to share? It is highly likely that our last little frostie will be donated, because I don't think we're going to have any more. My thoughts might change as my twins get older, but I don't know if we have the finances to have another kiddo.

Ok, I got some further clarification. The $920 is the cost to preserve the embryos plus 1 year of storage. At my one year anniversary, I will begin being charged $60 a month. So about $720 a year.

My IVF cost form says $920. I think that's the cost to freeze and to store... not sure for how long (need to ask). Oh, I don't have IF insurance coverage so all out of pocket for me.

Oh, $920 doesn't surprise me. For our IUIs, we had to freeze DH's sperm to have as a back-up and that cost us $420 every time we needed a sample to freeze. Also, they only stored it for a few weeks. Pricey but it was worth it. Having a cancelled cycle because DH couldn't provide a sample was devastating. (Though, I never showed or told the DH about it. He was hard on himself for failing to provide a sample, so I definitely had to be supportive.)

Our fees were progressive (cheap for one year then more expensive) and insurance didn't cover anything. We did deduct the costs from our taxes since infertility and having a kid, we have hit our medical minimums every year.

I'm glad I stumbled upon this. We are just about to start the IVF process for the first time and I was reading the extensive packet I got in the mail and DH and I had to discuss the embryo freezing process, whether we wanted to, how long to keep them. Wowza, so much to think about! But anyway, at our facility, it costs $659 to freeze embryos for 2 years and then we can pay an annual fee after that.

1) Do you know how much it actually costs to keep your embryos frozen? I think ours is around $600/year

2) Do you know if insurance is covering it? If so, for how long?My insurance does cover anything IVF related :bummed:

3) Any plans or hopes or thoughts about your frozen embryos you'd like to share? I am currently pregnant with my first fresh cycle, I am hoping, praying, wishing that my little one's sibling/ siblings are there so I never have to do another fresh cycle again. The cost to store in minimal in comparison to the cost of fresh cycle/meds so I am so thankful to have frosties.

First year storage was included in the ivf fee. We decided not to renew since we had twins and didn't want to do ivf again. It was around $650/year to keep in storage. Not sure if insurance covered it.

@brady80: Thank you! And we have four that are frozen.

Ladies, thanks for your responses! Very helpful. I thought paying out of pocket would be a lot more expensive and was afraid that we wouldn't be able to use them since our first LO would be only 3 months by the time insurance doesn't cover them anymore! Ridiculous. So we'll probably keep them around til we're ready to use them. Phew!

@ineebee: It was $650 for the freezing and first year of storage (we have 2 frozen). Each subsequent year of storage is $250. We are currently expecting a baby in April from our fresh cycle and the earliest we would consider doing an FET would be fall of 2016 so we plan to continue to store the embryos until we are ready to use them. We have no insurance coverage for infertility procedures so the cost is out of pocket for us but it seems like such a small price to pay to have some comfort that we have the opportunity to have another child without going through another fresh cycle.

My insurance did not cover it. The freezing plus first six months of storage was $550. After that every six months is another $325. We had twins from my first fresh cycle and don't plan to have any more children, so we are not continuing to store our one frozen embryo. I'm glad we froze it and stored it to begin with though, in case the fresh cycle hadn't worked. It was much less expensive to do a FET than fresh cycle. (We paid everything out of pocket)

Congrats! My dd is the result of a FET. We had 5 embryos and our insurance covered the cost for a year. After that we paid $400 for another year. We just did a cycle that didn't work and are waiting for our next FET. Our insurance covers fertility treatment. They won't let us do another fresh cycle until all of our frozen embryos are used. How many embryos do you have?

I'm currently pregnant with a fresh embryo from fresh IVF over the summer. I'm getting mixed messages about the cost of keeping our four frozen embryos ("I wouldn't worry about that," said the financial advisor) and also about how much our insurance is going to cover and for how long (I'm told one year only).

Feel free to answer any of the following questions:

1) Do you know how much it actually costs to keep your embryos frozen?

2) Do you know if insurance is covering it? If so, for how long?

3) Any plans or hopes or thoughts about your frozen embryos you'd like to share?
