I had cold feet throughout the whole process. I feel like a disappointment to my realtor the whole time, because he was SO UPBEAT the whole time, and would say things like "aren't you SO EXCITED?!!" and I would just answer "....I guess"

Now that we've been in our house for 3 months or so, I'm starting to like it a lot more, and feel more comfortable and happy there. It helps that I still cruise zillow & the like and see that we got probably the best thing we could've for the money we had. WHEW. So my feet are slowly thawing.

We have cold feet at the moment. We close next week. We love the house itself, but it doesn't have a few things my husband REALLY wanted so he's feeling especially weird about everything. We've also had so many things go wrong throughout the whole process...we can't help but feel like - is this a sign?? Should we give up?

I don't know. Right now everything is full steam ahead. I really hope we love it and it feels like home once we're there. We're both sad about leaving our current house.

My husband is kind of the king of cold feet. We live in a tight housing market, so we bid on probably 10 places before we finally found the place we live in now. We lost most of the bids--but won one where the appraisal came in 60k low and it was never a favorite of mine (but my husband loved it), so seeing the low appraisal caused us to back out. Then we bid on another with an asking-price offer, expecting to lose (everything was going for way over asking), but we won--and then backed out for no reason other than we just felt like it wasn't right.

We finally found our place through work of mouth and bought through a for-sale-by-owner situation without it ever hitting the open market. We were glad and it worked out in the end, but there were a lot of ups and downs along the way.

@knittylady: PM me to let me know where it is!!

We had cold feet during escrow/ before closing. It was just so much money and though we love(d) the house we were hoping it was the right decision.

I think I get cold feet any time I have to make a purchase over $100! Seriously, though, we delayed a car purchase for a year because I got cold feet on the whole thing.

We had major cold feet during escrow - it was so hard to know what issues were acceptable and what weren't. I think you need to have an amazing realtor to walk you through it. Ours was just okay. We went with the house and haven't had any issues so far! (It's been 20 months)
Emotionally though, it's taking me a LONG time to like the house. I think that's just me though, I was really sad to leave our old (rental) place even though we had no choice.

DH and I were in contract on four houses - I have a thread on being terrible decision makers. We estimate we looked at 300-400 houses before buying. I'mhappy with the house we bought and don't regret walking away from one. There was another with a $30k deck repair. That seemed like so much money - and had to be done.. We walked away but prices rose over $50k in the year between that and when we bought. We ended up with a smaller, older house for more money. It stings a little.

We are about to close on our first home (eek!) but I definitely had cold feet when we put in the offer. We are moving from an urban neighborhood to a subdivision and I also felt unsure about the subdivision because it's small and not districted for our preferred elementary school. Well, after looking at Zillow for the last month, I feel better, because there has literally not been anything in our budget that's zoned for our preferred elementary and we love everything else about the house. We are on a relocation timeline, though, so we didn't have forever to wait for the perfect house to come on the market. Good luck! I hope it works out for you!

We went through cold feet when we found a cute little house in a nice neighborhood, well within our budget, but could never commit to making an offer. It turned out to be a location thing. At some point, we switched to looking into the city instead of the suburbs and our cold feet at making an offer went away. I think we just weren't ready to move out of the city yet. To afford a house in the city though, we had to go up to the absolute max we could afford. I was pretty nervous at how much we'd had to spend.

Then, we had a massive plumbing issue the morning after we moved in and I was convinced that we'd just made the biggest mistake of our lives. But after that got sorted out, the house has actually been great and I am 100% happy that we got it. Our house is old, so it does have issues that come up from time to time, but we've been able to handle them all pretty easily. Plus our house has really appreciated in value since we bought it so even though it was at the top of our budget when we bought it, we will probably actually make money when we sell. It has turned out to be a very good purchase and I'm glad we bought it.

In 2012 we bought a house we didnt like all that much, but it was a good buy and I was pregnant and we needed stable housing. Neither of us loved the house and in 2014 we sold it for slightly more than what we bought it for, we were so eager to leave we didnt even care about losing the money we spent on repairs. A month ago we bought a 75 year old house in a location we love and I have definitely had moments of what was I thinking but nothing like with the first one. I keep getting burned by this house (last week it was an asbestos scare), but I love it so much that I'm oblivious.

@youboots: yes basically the same story here. Old houses are so much drama!

Yeah. We bought a 100 year old house that needed a lot of work. It was DHs 'dream' I went along with it and I'm glad. Mostly because I love the town and walkable neighborhood. I'd be extremely resistant to buy another old house.

We looked for three years offered on a dozen homes and when we finally won by bidding $140k over asking the first word out of my mouth was fuuuuuuuuck.
Two years later I'm so glad we got this house but at first it was overwhelming. it didn't help that the house needed a complete renovation and that after searching for so long my heart stopped investing in each house so when we finally got one I was actually ambivalent towards the house we got.

My cold feet came when the appraisal came back $20k less than our accepted offer. We were in a bidding war and paid $5k over the appraisal. At that point we had already upped our earnest money to $5k to look just as attractive as the offer. So we justified paying more than the appraisal since it didn't impact our actual mortgage. I already thought we were paying more than more market value based on the comps and had some serious reservations. Once we moved in everything was fine. It's weird I had those feelings because we found a great house at the very low end of our budget and I was still complaining. Go figure!

Cold feet about moving in general? The house in general? Or something specific on the inspection? Both times we've bought a house we didn't get cold feet about the house... BUT, the inspection is always nerve racking. I know NOTHING about home repairs so basically anything on the inspection report put me into a panic. So we have attended the inspection both times, used an inspector we trusted and flat out asked them if there was anything in it that would cause them to shy away from the purchase. We also sent the reports to a contractor friend for him to let us know if anything seemed like a red flag.

Buying a house is a huge step financially and emotionally. So if you have cold feet in general I would take a step back and try to see if you're just feeling overwhelmed by what is a scary process by definition, or if there is really a legit reason that you should re think your decision.

I think anytime you are plunking down so much cash and simultaneously signing a loan for a large amount of money, it is normal to have cold feet. We bought our house in an extremely hot market so there was no time for second thoughts - if you hesitated, you lost the house. So I didn't exactly get cold feet, but I definitely had an OMG what the f have we done moment at the closing table :silly:

DH and I recently put an offer on a house. We need to move by the end of May, and saw about 15 houses before we made the offer. I had been looking through Zillow etc., for several months to get an idea of what was available in our budget and how fast things move etc.,

Anyway, we've been super psyched, but today at the home inspection we started getting cold feet. I'm looking for your cold feet stories and how they ended- with buying the house happily or with regrets, or backing out happily or with regrets.

Trying to get a sense of how normal our feelings are... Or not :/
