In CA (Poway School District) the cut off is 5 before Oct 1st.
From 3 - 8 hrs each day depending on the school.

In Sweden, I'm still trying to make sense of it all. Daycare is essentially like pre-K (from 1-5 yrs old). But at age 3, they get formal instruction for a total of 15 hrs per week (3 hrs a day or 5 hrs 3x a week). But the kids don't have to go anywhere, it's all at daycare and they continue with their schedule/play after class.

I *think* it's the same when they turn 6, but they're no longer in daycare. So they start kindergarten at age 6. But from the info I'm getting, the hours are roughly the same (3-4 hrs a day). The only difference is they're in elementary school (with kids ages 6-12) and the period after instruction is roughly an organized after school session.

- Who picks up your child after school and where do they go (I.e after school session, grandma's house, babysitter, etc.)
Parents pick them up or sometimes daycare busses.

I teach elementary school in Colorado and you're right that the answers to all those questions are very different, even from district to district. My current school works like this:

1/2 day K goes from 8:15-11:20 (3ish hrs)
Full day K goes 8:15-3:15 (7 hrs)
Our district's cutoff is Oct 1st.

My school has on-site before & after school care, as well as multiple daycares that will pick-up students at the end of the day.

My DD is in second grade now, but when she was in kindergarten the dropoff was between 8:05 and 8:20 a.m. There is an early-care option that starts at 7:50 but at an extra fee. Her class had one main teacher but they also had P.E. and music with different teachers. They had a "rest" time after lunch for kids who needed to nap; kids who didn't want to nap could look at books quietly. Pickup was at 3:15 but we paid for aftercare until 6, which involved a different extra-curricular activity every day until 4:30 and then free play at the playground after that.

Age cutoff was you had to turn 5 before Sept 30.

This is a Louisiana public school. Also she had homework starting in the second semester, which involved one small assignment per night in addition to reading one book out loud.

Kindergarten in Switzerland begins at age 4, they go 3 days a week for half a day, and 2 days a week for the full day. In most places, there is no lunch program, so they go home to eat lunch.

Kindy in the part of the US where we are begins at age 5 (the kid has to be 5 in the calendar year) and it is a full day, from 9-3. Lunch at school, with a snack in the morning and afternoon.

I have no idea how we will handle before/after care. Right now, my son goes to daycare (age 3) and my parents handle before/after care as we're both working.

We are in private Montessori kindergarten. Class is 8:15-3:15. They have built in extended day child care that begins at 6 am and ends at 6pm so my kids get to school by 8:15 but stay until 5:30. The public schools follow the same class time. Next year, when she goes to public school I plan to drop off by 8 am and possibly bus her to the same private after school care she is going to now. Or if I can adjust my schedule to do a 3:15 pickup every day, that is an option, but I will still have my DS as pre-schooler in the private school so might as well get them both from the same place..
Cut off date here is 9/1

We aren't there yet but I have investigated this for my local school. My friend also has a child there.

It is full day kindergarten which means 8:00 am - 2:20 pm. They can get there as early as 7:45 for morning play time.

The age cutoff is 5 years before September 1st.

My friend's dad picks him up and takes him to a babysitter. I will hopefully be able to arrange my schedule to pick him up. Or he will stay at the after school program or boys and girls club will pick him up and take them to their afterschool program.

I'm curious to know about kindergarten schedules and how working parents manage pick-ups and drop-offs. LO still has a few years before she starts, but I just want to wrap my head around the basics.

After doing a quick search, it seems the required amount of hours varies from state/county. I'd also love to hear from international bees.

- How many hours a day is Kindergarten?
- From what time?
- Who picks up your child after school and where do they go (I.e after school session, grandma's house, babysitter, etc.)
- What's the age cut off date?
