My son didn't crawl until almost 1 year, he didn't walk until 18.5 months.

At no point was my doctor worried enough to recommend intervention.

My son walked at 18.5 months. He was such a good crawler that he just didn’t seem that interested. He’s been on the later end with all gross motor (including stuff after walking like running/jumping), but he’s normal :).

@IRunForFun: awww, so cute!

DD bum-scooted until she was 16 months, unless someone held her by both hands. Then she'd walk pretty well. She did start PT at 14 months or so, but I don't think she had any problem other than being stubborn. And having a big brother who she knew would bowl her over if she stood up. Funny, but she didn't start trying to walk on her own until she took a big tumble off a bed - maybe it made her less scared of small trips and falls somehow...

@IRunForFun: Yeah, there is such a range of normal! My friend's son, who is a month and a half older than mine, walked at nine months. That would have made me anxious about being behind if I didn't know from my mom that my sister and I both walked at 15ish months. And we walk totally normally now ;-)

@IRunForFun: our late walker loves that pose, too!

My DD is 19 months and we all know she can walk, but she chooses to walk on her knees instead. She's really quite good and can move fast. Her pediatrician said he doesn't see something preventing her from walking, but I'm still setting a date for an evaluation with a PT.

As a slight update, when we ask her to stand up, she's now started doing this, which she's never done before. (This is within the past 2 days.) Sometimes she'll put one arm up in the air at the same time. So maybe she's trying? :grin:

@Calibee: Haha, it's kind of a funny image! She just nonchalantly walks in one day...

@Dahlia: Interesting! DD really doesn't like to walk holding our hands, especially for more than a few steps. I wish she did!

@Woolly Mammoth: Thanks, I was wondering if that was the case!

@MrsSCB: I thought 18 months too! Also that woman must have been smoking something. :silly: We were out this weekend and a woman asked us how old DD was, followed by "Is she walking yet?" I kind of braced myself, and my DH said, "She's working on it!" But the woman went on to say she has 4 kids and the earliest walker was 14 months and she had one who didn't walk until 20 months, and they were all fine. So that was refreshing!

@maddyz: Thanks! I think I just have these visions that they're just going to come in and judge me or point out all the things I'm doing wrong that are contributing to her not walking. Which is ridiculous, I know.

Not for walking but my LO2 is a really late talker and I just had an EI evaluation. I am waiting to hear if he qualifies. I don't think he will meet the mark of 30% delayed BUT I just wanted to say that the evaluation processes was SO helpful to see, reassuring that yes, he is a bit behind and all the things that i noticed are true, but also that it's not much of a worry.

They all really do take their own time, but it's also great to have someone check up on them if you are worried.

My son started walking right at 15 months. I’d asked the doctor about walking at an unrelated appointment and she said they don’t start to be concerned about it until 18 months. He also met other physical milestones early, like rolling at eight weeks, etc. Given her other accomplishments (standing independently, pulling up) it sounds like she’s fine and just doing things in her own time! :happy: I don’t even remember when my son started to stand without pulling up!

DD didn't walk until almost 16 months. She would walk anywhere and everywhere holding our hand, but would not let go. When she finally did, she was a pretty steady walker from the get go.

She's just got a very cautious personality and doesn't like to do anything unless she's sure she can do it right (which I think is one of the big hold ups for potty training right now!).

My daughter didn’t crawl until 13 months and didn’t walk until 17 months. She just had no desire to even try.

But the first time she walked, my husband and I were grabbing something in the kitchen while she was in the living room. Suddenly she was in the kitchen with us. And she walked perfectly from then on out. I think we suffered less bumps and bruises because she was pretty steady by the time she decided she was ready to walk.

@Shantuck: Well, that's reassuring!

@Corduroy: It's funny because I feel like my DD isn't cautious about physical stuff. She'll throw herself head first off the furniture. It's crazy how much of this can come down to personality though.

@xInfinity: Yeah I am wondering if they'll tell us nothing is wrong also and it'll just be a matter of time...

@JJ2626: I've heard that lots of babies work on only one skill at a time or focus more on one so that makes sense. I think DD is average in terms of being verbal.

@Dizzymiss: Thanks!

@pinkb: Yeah there doesn't seem to be a downside to getting an eval so why not?

@Pollywog: Interesting so he didn't crawl or pull up until after he walked?

My LO walked at 15 months, 28 days. We had to set up an early intervention appointment at 16 months if he wasn't walking He was generally behind on gross motor skills (couldn't crawl until 22 months, didn't pull up until 18...). He's now 26 months and you'd never tell he was behind. He's completely on track.

@IRunForFun: interesting! I suspect that’s a factor. My friend delivered at 33 weeks and her daughter was “still breech” and had a lot of extra screening of her hips. It’s come up on several occasions that the longer girls spend non-vertex the more susceptible they are to a variety of hip issues, especially weakness.

DD walked at 18 months. She was on the late side for all her gross motor skills even now at 5. And it took a lot of coaxing to get her going on her own. EI eval never hurts!

My little boy was nearly 3 before he walked. Bum shuffled from about 16 months. With this said he did have issues with tone and hypermobility. Flying around now. He's 3.5 now. My little girl was 16 months when she walked. She's 4.5 now. I learned that kids will do things on there own schedule, if they are happy healthy and you have no other worries I wouldn't be too concerned.

My baby is only 2 months old but my niece didn’t walk until 18 months. She barely even crawled-just scooted herself around on her butt. My sister was about to get her evaluated and then she just walked. She is now 8 and a cautious kid and we think she just didn’t want to walk until she knew she’d be good at it. She was also very verbal. Not sure if maybe she was more focused on that.

My oldest didn't walk until 20 months, she literally took her first solo steps 5 days before her sister was born. She was really late to pull up or cruise too. We had her evaluated by PT a couple times and there was nothing physically wrong, she just didn't want to do it yet. She was a butt scooter and got around so fast that way so she never crawled and we really had to work with her to get her walking. But she was the same as others said...walking perfectly and fulltime within days of her first steps.

My daughter is 17 months and started walking at 16 months (she’s now running!). I went to her 15 month appointment concerned she wasn’t walking and my pediatrician told me we were the 5th 15 month appointment she had that day with the child not walking yet. She also told me that she didn’t personally walk until 17 months and urged me to chill out. Of course she was walking a few weeks later... I’d try to give it more time.

@LadyDi: Yes, that part is the worst!! I think it's the older baby's version of "Is she sleeping through the night yet?" It especially bothers me that my MIL asks every time we talk and speculates about why she isn't walking (a lot of the speculation placing the blame on me...)

Our daughter is 14.5 months, but is similar. She doesn't seem like she'll be walking any time soon, even though she cruises all over, crawls super fast, loves to climb, and likes to stand for small amounts of time (mostly after pulling up). I think she's just a bit cautious about walking. I expect once she starts, she won't be wobbly at all - it's like she's waiting for that!

DS1 didn't start walking until 17 months. We did start EI services shortly after he turned 1. But, he was on the late side of all of his gross motor milestones and while he was great at scooting on his butt he wouldn't crawl, pull himself to stand, cruise or even sit up on his own in his grib. But once he started walking he just did it, he didn't fall down much or wobble. Now that he's three I realize that this is probably just part of his personality. He is very timid when it comes to things that are physical (he's not a climber or jumper, very hesitant at playgrounds, etc). I think he just didn't want to walk until he knew he could do it without falling. That being said, I really loved our PT and if nothing else she provided me with the peace of mind that he was fine. The worst part about a late walker is people always asking if he was walking yet!

@JennyPenny: That's interesting! She was breech for a while but flipped some time after 32 weeks. She kept her legs frogged up as if she'd been breech for about her first 3 months of life!

@muffinsmuffins: That's definitely what we are going to do. Might as well make the appointment since it's free and we can always cancel. We try to work with her a lot but she just gets so frustrated!

@IRunForFun: my little one didn’t start walking till 16 months. The doctor wasn’t worried but it stressed me out. Like yours he hit other milestones early and I thought he would walk a lot earlier than that. He wasn’t a stable walker at first either. His falling worried but a few months into it he was fine and running all over the place not falling.

DS didn’t walk until 17.5 months. How do I know exactly? Because he needed to be walking by 18 months to start his new daycare ha! Like others, one day he just walked to me when I picked him up from daycare. Skipped past the wobbly stage and just did it no problem. I was worried and getting anxious but I figured I couldn’t make him walk, just encourage as much as possible. He was a preemie but hit most other milestones other than talking (he has a speech disorder) on time.

I’m assuming it would be a bit of a wait for your referral to go through so I would just do it and keep encouraging in the meantime. Then you have the appointment if you need it but could cancel if you don’t. As I recall, they only start to get concerned if kids aren’t walking by age two so there’s definitely time.
