@daniellemybelle: wow 9oz of breastmilk! He did used to breastfeed A LOT!

@ree723: I guess someone has to be at the top of the chart! 2-3 sessions does sound low, I can't imagine DS getting by on 2 bottles per day!

@Bubbles: We meet with our HV for the first time next week (we just moved to the UK from Australia) and I'm afraid she's going to say the same thing! DD2 is a giant baby - at 4.5 months old, she was 19.8 lbs (9 kg), which put her above the 99th percentile; I can't remember exactly what her length was but that off the charts too. I would imagine at our appt next week, at 6.5 months, she's going to be somewhere around 23-24 lbs, which is humongous! DD1 is 26 months old and only 26 lbs - her little sister is going to overtake her very soon!

I went to a GP today for an unrelated issue and the GP asked how many times per day DD was nursing - I said on average 6 or 7 times in a 24 hour period, and she thought that was an insanely high number! She told me to start cutting back significantly and give her more food with a goal of getting DD down to 2-3 nursing sessions per day. That doesn't sound right to me, but who knows?

To answer your original question though, DD2, at 6.5 months old, is EBF still, averaging around 6-8 feeds per 24 hour period and occasionally maybe a third of a pouch of puréed baby food (an Ella's Kitchen pouch). I know I should be doing more solids but we only just started a couple of weeks ago and I'm not terribly fussed about it yet. I'll see what our HV has to say on Tuesday.

@Bubbles: I don't think you should feel bad! And you don't know that about BF vs FF. Some moms have really plentiful supplies, and especially if they pump and bottle feed during the week, their LOs may be drinking a lot too. My cousin is a WOHM and her 8 month old drinks 8-9 oz bottles of breast milk! He's a tiny guy though. I don't know where he puts it!

@Rubies: I'd ask your doctor! My pediatrician said at our 9 month check up that even with full meals of solids, babies need at least 16 oz of formula or breast milk until they are about 1 year because they need those nutrients. You may have a lot of milk though & she's getting around 8 oz twice a day? If I remember right, you also make chunky LOs!

@cherrybee: thank you - I imagine it is tougher the other way round. Sometimes he does have a day of rejecting his solids, but if it's milk then down the hatch it goes!

Thanks so much for all the replies, it is really helpful and reassuring to see what others are doing! I felt really bad that I might be really overfeeding him, especially as the HV made the point that if we were still breastfeeding there's no way he'd be getting 30oz of milk per day.

@tanjowen: it is great to hear of another baby who is also heavy! I was also told that he should naturally decrease his milk intake but no signs yet. Sometimes he eats so much solids though and sometimes barely any. Maybe I just need to be patient!

@daniellemybelle: that is a good point about the type of puree, I do give him a lot of avocado which I think is quite high in calories!

@pirouette: that is very true, when we are out and about he is barely interested in bottles or solids, socialising is far more interesting!

Thanks again to all

@Bubbles: My LO weighed in at almost 20 lbs. at his 6 month appointment, so I can't imagine what he'll be at his 9 month! We started solids around 7 months and he is FF. I think he eats about the same or more as your LO!:

* 6-7 am - wake up and 8 oz.
* 8:30 - breakfast. Usually 2 slices of avocado, 3 rounds of roasted sweet potato & a few spoonfuls of oatmeal/puree
*11:00 a.m. - wake up from nap, 6 oz bottle
* 3:30 p.m. - wake up from nap, 8 oz bottle
* 5:30 - dinner. Avocado, veggie of the day, and oatmeal/puree
*7:00 p.m. - 8 oz bottle and bed.

So yeah, still at about 30 oz. per day. Our pediatrician told us as he starts to down more solids we should see a decrease in milk. I will say he doesn't wake up in the middle of the night since last week, so that's 4 oz down.

I feel that our LO has just gotten the hang of actually eating food in the past week at 8 months old, so you might see a change soon! I also think once your LO starts moving, it will all even out :)

@Rubies: Are you only nursing/doing milk once a day now (other than the sips of whole milk)?

I feel like babies vary so much in what they eat! I don't think there is anything wrong with what you are doing. I bet when he starts crawling he will get leaner! My daughter dropped percentiles when she became mobile.

You could try changing one bottle a day to a sippy cup? It will take him longer to drink if he is still getting the hang of it. Or do lower calorie purées? I've noticed fruit purées have a lot of sugar and calories compared to veggie purées.

Anyway, this is an average day. She is a light eater. We combo BF/FF.

- 7am: Nurse
- 7:30: Breakfast, usually 2-3 oz of oatmeal with applesauce & maybe a little fruit
- 9am: 4-5 oz bottle
- 12pm: Lunch, 3-4 oz of purée (usually a pouch) and finger foods like cheese, beans, veggies, puffs but most of them end up on the floor
- If I am not working we will often do a "nurse snack" in here. She is pulling on my shirt these days haha. If I'm not home she might have a little bit of formula in a sippy (like 1 oz) or just skip it.
- 2pm: 4-5 oz bottle
- 4-5pm: We usually have a "nurse snack" sometime after her nap.
- 6pm: Dinner, mostly finger foods because she is too cranky to be spoonfed
- 7pm: Nurse & top off with 3-4 oz formula

My LO eats an insane amount of food. But we do BLW so I don't have a lot of measurements for you but I'll do my best. She will be 12 months on the 12th.
She usually wakes around 4 am to nurse
630/7- nurse
7/730- 1 scrambled egg, a handful of cut up fruit or toast & some greek yogurt usually mixed with unsweetened applesauce
10- nurse/snack (fruit pouch, chopped fruit, freeze dried apple...)
12- 1/2 avocado (this never changes, she gets avocado everyday), usually a handful (my hand) of protien & one of fruit or veggies. Occasionally nurse.
3- nurse/snack
6- dinner. Whatever we are having. Usually veggies & protien & some rice or something. She generally gets a mommy sized handful of each & eats a good 90% of it. I usually nurse her immediately after & then she's done for the night

My LO is almost 9 months and she is still nursing every 2-3 hours, but I offer solids before her morning nap (today it was blueberries and mango), when I feed DD1 lunch around 1:30 (today it is broccoli and chicken breast) and then at dinner time (whatever we are eating).

So she still nurses a lot, but gets three solids meals a day, and scattered in there are some snacks of puffs/water/whatever.

Thanks so much for all the replies. Sounds like he's not TOO far off what others are doing and maybe just reducing his bottles by a few ounces will be enough. I think he does eat just for the sake of it some of the time, he never acts hungry til he sees his bottle!

@Pirouette: he does drink water with his meals but normally only drinks a a few sips and then just starts spitting it back out again! But I think reducing a few ounces he will hopefully be ok with.

@Catlady no he's not on the move yet but he's trying! I can imagine that really burns the calories!

@mrs.shinerbock: this is my almost exact schedule :) she probably takes a little less solids than that, and 8oz is a good day, but we're just trying to up her intake a little.

@Bubbles: I have the opposite problem as you (eating too little) so i would love it if LO would eat like that! but you could certainly try putting less in the bottle and see how it goes! or what if you gave the bottle after solids and maybe he'd take less? does he drink water? you could try giving more water and a little less formula maybe?

Mine is 10 months and currently her schedule is something like this (she takes bottles at daycare and nurses on weekend)

Somewhere between 4:30 and 6am - nurse
7:30 - Oatmeal or cereal and fruit
11 - nurse/bottle
12:30 or 1 - Lunch (usually veggies and grains)
4 - nurse/bottle
6 - dinner (table food)
7 - nurse

Is your baby crawling or cruising yet? I know mine has really slimmed down over the past couple months.

530 - dinner (puree or table food)
630 5-6oz bottle

My LO is 9.5 months and our typical day looks like this:

5:30 AM - nurse
8:30 AM - 3-5 oz of solids and purees
9:00 AM - bottle of BM**
1:00PM - 3-5 oz of solids and purees
1:30 PM - bottle of BM**
3:00 PM - bottle of BM**
6:00 PM - 3-5 oz of solids and purees
7:00 PM - nurse
2:00 AM - nurse
** LO drinks approx 8 oz of BM during these three feedings, but I am unsure how it is broken out since it is with the nanny.

When I was getting ready to go back to work when LO was 8 months, I did a lot of research about how to transistion EBF babies to a bottle. One of the things that stuck in my mind was that with BFing, babies can control the flow of milk, but with a bottle they can't, so they will drink a lot more than they need if they are wanting to comfort suck or something. You might try just reducing how much you are putting in the bottles by an ounce or so and seeing if your LO is still hungry after he finishes it.

Xander started pretty slow with solids because he wasn't that interested. He probably worked up to 3 meals a day by 10 months or so. We didn't introduce snacks until after he was a year.

I'm not sure about the milk intake though. Xander got breast milk, which I know is different, so I hope a FF mom can help you with that! I would think 4 bottles a day sounds right though! I'm just not sure the amounts.

I could really do with some advice on when and how much to feed LO. I took him to be weighed today and he's 24lbs (8mo), which puts him above the 98th centile. He was born on the 75th and has been steadily rising through the centiles, but this is a pretty big jump and the HV advised I should try to reduce his milk.

He's been FF since 7mo, and we started solids just shy of 6mo. He gets 3 meals of solids a day (purée and finger foods) but the amount he will eat varies wildly. This is his day...

6.30/7am - 8oz bottle
8am Breakfast - porridge (about 5oz) and a small pancake
11.00am - 8oz bottle
12.00pm Lunch - purée and finger food eg avocado and cheese pieces
3.00pm - 7oz bottle
5.00pm Dinner - usually a puréed version of our dinner and something like broccoli pieces. And a small yoghurt.
7.00pm - 7oz bottle

I am just struggling to work out what and when he should be eating. The HV suggested introducing snacks, but I have no idea where I would fit those in! He always drinks all the milk I offer him. Any advice gratefully received!
