@runnerd: maybe me, another username then, but migrated and surgically removed from fat of my abdominal wall, lol.

So yah, not the best story, but we'll never know if it was the Mirena or who inserted it.

My experience was atypical but it was negative. It partially expelled and had to be painfully removed. I was always a fan of the product and wanted to love it but unfortunately it didn't work out for me and I would not choose it again.

I'm still evaluating whether I like mine or not.

I got the Mirena after my second child at around 11 months postpartum. I hadn't had my period yet because of breastfeeding and getting the Mirena caused me to get my period, but it was very light and for only a few days. I had a few more very light periods in the months following, and now only get occasional spotting. I can feel the strings, so I know it's in place and I like not having to remember to take pills or having to worry.

BUT, immediately after having the Mirena placed, I noticed a DRAMATIC impact to my libido. I've always had a low libido on BCP, as well as through pregnancy and nursing, but this was a new low. Not only was I never in the mood, but I noticed I felt basically numb when we would have sex and it was really hard to get into it. And orgasms were impossible. At my follow-up, I told my OB my concerns and she suggested giving it 6 months for my body to get used to it.

Thankfully, 6 months later, I was mostly back to my normal low libido self. I still wasn't ever interested in sex, but at least I started to be able to feel again and could have orgasms again.

Then just last week, out of the blue (8 months after I had the Mirena placed), I had a sudden and dramatic libido change where I actually wanted sex ALL THE TIME. To the point where I checked and double-checked and tripled-checked that the Mirena was still in place (it was). That lasted about a week and I'm back to low libido again.

@autumn865: If you don't have any contraindications to using birth control pills you could try taking them for one cycle on top of the Mirena. That sorts out irregular or lengthy bleeding for a lot of women.

I'm still on the fence about my experience so far. I found the actual insertion to be quite painful. Immediately after I got super shaky, dizzy and sick. I waited a bit to feel better and tried to drive myself home but halfway there I had to pull over to get sick and call someone to come pick me up. In the first month or two I would occasionally have cramping that was so bad it affected my day to day activities. I've had it for four months and I am still bleeding. I have some days where I don't need to wear a pad or pantiliner but the majority of days I have to wear one. The non bleeding days are increasing and my OB tells me to be patient but I am losinv patience and questioning how long I have to wait. I do like I don't have to take a pill or worry about it but overall for me after 4 months it doesn't seem to be working. I'm surprised because I've heard so many good things!

    I had two pre-baby and got a third post-baby. I've had 10 years of amenorrhea, relief from endometriosis pain, dramatically reduced menstrual migraines, and highly effective contraception. I'm a big fan.

I had my first inserted a week ago, so I'm not sure how my body will do on it. However, I like it so far. The insertion was painless. Only had to deal with minor spotting and cramps since.

I cramped for 5 months while my body adjusted to it. Sometimes very painfully, I had several ultrasounds to make sure it was still in place. It always was. I started getting ovarian cysts which were painful so I got it taken out. That was all pre babies. I still think it was a good option for me when I had it, but not fun or easy. I also didn't like what not ovulating did to my moods. I won't be doing that again.

I like it. I love not worrying about taking a pill or using other protection, and I don't feel weird the way I did on the pill. But I had spotting for several months after it was inserted which was just really annoying.

We are 99% sure we are done having kids, but stories like @lovehoneybee: are the reason I didn't use anything between babies.

I had one after LO - it was placed at 8 weeks postpartum. No issues at all, only got one period on it, and got pregnant within a month of removal. I will definitely get another one after LO2.

I'm also on my second mirena. One before inwas ever pregnant and got my second one at 3 month pp this year after having DS. Loved both. No issues, no bleeding. Just awesomeness. I also got pregnant the first month of trying once I had the first one removed. Didn't hurt at all to have it inserted either.

I'm on my 2nd Mirena and I love it. I don't have to worry about remembering to take a pill or get a shot and I have very light periods. It was also easy to conceive after I had my first one taken out. I just needed one cycle to figure out when the time was right to DTD.

I had one after I had DD1 and I looooooooved it. I had light/ no periods for two full years in between babies, plus I am absolutely awful about remembering to take my birth control. I am definitely getting another one after this baby is born because I am definitely (probably) done after 2.

Well.

My first one (between my kids) was awesome. I spotted for around 6wks immediately after, and then would randomly spot very lightly for an hour or two every few months. NBD. I had it taken out in late Feb and got a BFP mid-April.

My second one, though, whoa. I'm a horror story. Long story short it was stuck in my cervical canal and broke apart when they tried to pull it out, and I ended up having to have surgery to try to remove an arm that embedded itself into my cervical wall out...which was unsuccessful (the piece was apparently done in sideways like a splinter, and the surgeon said the more he tried the messier he got, so...it's still there.). THAT SAID (and I know I'm a little crazy) I got a third put in during that surgery. The OB had a tough time putting it in in the first place...I think maybe it wasn't placed properly, and I hadn't checked it at all or gone in for a follow-up. I'm donedonedone having kids, so I'm not quite as worried about complications (and I've had it checked twice since). I still trust it more than I trust anything else to keep me sans oopsie baby, and there were just several things that went wrong...the odds of any one of them are low, but all of them together are miniscule. My OB had never seen anything like it happen that way before.

I've decided to get the IUD Mirena until my husband schedules his vasectomy. I'm 36 and we are done having kids. I am 7 weeks pp but my OB is making me wait until I'm 3 months postpartum.

I'm interested in hearing your personal experiences with it. Did you love it or hate it?
