@MarieJ: I agree with zippylef...CIO is not for every baby. We stuck it out b/c it seemed to be getting better every night, but then I would cave and make it worse.

The first night, he cried about 20 minutes, then went to sleep. But that night, he woke up at 3 and cried on and off until 4. I was about to go in when my DH told me to give him 2 more minutes, and he quieted down and went back to sleep in that 2 minutes. So yes, my DH was very on board with helping me. In fact, there were nights that his crying made me so upset that I would go in our basement and DH would do the checking and make sure he was ok until he quieted down and went to sleep. He would then come and get me. He would often tell me to just go out to the grocery store so I wouldn't have to listen to it.

It started off with 20 minutes, then went up to 30, then progressively came down from there about 5 minutes shorter every night. The last week he would cry for 5 minutes every night and then drift off to sleep. It took 3-4 weeks until he didn't cry at all when he went down. Last night was the first night in a very long time that I had to rock him to sleep at night b/c his teeth were bothering him and he wouldn't stop crying.

I think if you stay consistent and you and your DH are both on the same page, you can do it. But it will drive a mother crazy to hear the crying!!

@MarieJ: I would say that CIO is not right for every baby. DH doesnt do night wakings because he gets up early, so he left the sleep training up to me and just followed along with the plan I set down. So yes, he did help. I would say the longest she ever cried was 30-40 minutes. Most of the time it was less than 10. She goes down every night without too much fuss and even if she doesnt sleep right away, she sits and talks to herself. No crying. It is hard to do and it takes a commitment, but it worked well for us. I would say its worth a try. Just remember, if you do try it, to stick to your guns and keep going for at LEAST 3-4 days. The first few are the hardest.

We went from 2-3 wakings to none. She sleeps 6:30-9/9:30am.

@scg00387: thank you for the help! I'll probably take you up on that offer and write a few questions on your wall in a few days :-)
@zippylef: @2PeasinaPod: did your DH help you enforce CIO? Was it harder than you imagined? Did your Lo's cry for long periods of time? DD is the type to get hysterical before she gets better. That's what scares me most about CIO.

We also did CIO...took us a lot longer (probably around 2-3 weeks) until there was zero crying at night, but he goes down in less than 5 minutes now and no crying at all. If he does wake up at night, it's b/c there's something wrong (teeth is the main problem).

@MarieJ: yup now that it has been a little while, I've reflected a bit more and I still feel good about it. I feel like I helped him learn instead of forcing the point, and when he does seem to need me I don't feel like I'm messing anything up or confusing him by going to him or picking him up. I don't think there is anything wrong with CIO and I usually do let him fuss/cry if he's not hysterical with naps, but this is what worked best for us for night sleep and teaching him how to fall asleep on his own. Let me know if I can help at all!

We used the baby whisperer method both times and it worked great for us. It takes lots of time and patience though. My DD is 9 months old now and is consistently sleeping through the night now. She was getting up 2x a night until I finally gave in and decided to do the pick up/put down method. It took 3 days but it worked. Hooray!

@babynumber1: I tried the paci last night when she was searching frantically for my boob and she sucked it for a moment but then spit it out and started crying. She used to love her paci, now, not so much.

We did CIO, but it was really easy for us. She only cried for 10 minutes the first night, then nothing. We can see that she sits in her crib and plays with her paci's most nights.

Also, our LO wakes up in the middle of the night, but just to pop a paci back in and go back to asleep. Does your DD take a paci? Maybe that would get her to not nurse so much.

@MerryC: my DH isn't on board with CIO just yet, and wants to try something gentler so I looked into this sleep sense program and bought it over the weekend and plan to try it soon. i like the in room method, I'm glad to hear its working for you! the only thing I am trying to figure out is how to keep 1 night feed. I know she mentions it is best to eliminate all feeds as to not confuse them, but LO is only 6 months and I'd like to keep 1 feed.

@MerryC: she's 6 months as of last Tuesday. I love that idea! Thank you :) I'm definitely willing to try that. CIO/extinction, in my opinion, is not for us. I will definitely look up the Sleep sense program.

We used Ferber's method about a week ago (when LO was 6.5 months). http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/talk-to-me-about-ferber

It worked REALLY well and there was WAY less crying than I thought there would be...the longest he cried was 23 minutes, and that was 23 minutes of off and on (so 2 min crying, 5 min quiet, 1 min fussing, etc). It worked so quickly and now we are consistently at one night waking (which was my plan) and he goes to sleep at the beginning of the night and in the MOTN quickly. I will say that I found that doing checks sometimes riled him up more, so I found it helpful to just leave him for 10-15 min if he seemed like he was settling. I also think he was really ready for it, if that makes sense...his constant waking was affecting his daytime mood, so I knew we had to do something.

How old is you lo?

My kids are 10 months (today!) and were still eating and waking a lot at night, with a good amount of cosleeping mixed in to get them to settle. We decided to night wean and sleep train starting on Friday night using the Sleep Sense Program, and it has been amazing! DD has slept all night without needing us starting on night 2, and DS only had two quick wakeups by last night (night 3). Naps are improved too, longer and going down without any fussing by yesterday.

We use the stay in the room method, so the kids go in their cribs awake and we sit next to the crib until they fall asleep. You can talk to them, touch them, etc when they cry, which was really nice for our family. You just don't actively touch or talk them to sleep. Then over the days you move your chair further away in the room and lessen your talk/touch, as they get better at putting themselves to sleep.

I highly recommend if you aren't on board with leave and check or extinction style cio. I've been floored at how quickly my kids have responded to this method. But I think we were all ready for it too, and that played a big role in being successful. A month or two or three ago, we just weren't ready. And we had an official ok from our ped to night wean as of 9 months.

I really think it's time to sleep train DD!

We co-sleep and up until now, I have just given her a boob at night when she whimpers or tosses and turns. So, I know it's *my fault* that she has become used to that during her nightime sleep. I really think she's doing too many nighttime wake ups, they're not even full wake ups, just her frantically searching for the boob to comfort her. I'm ok with keeping one nightime wake up, but I want to get her in her own room in her own crib.

Tell me about your sleep training success stories- what you did, how long It took to work, etc.

I'm not comfortable with CIO, :-( it would break my heart!
