Miss A didn't really eat any great quantities of food until she was at least eighteen months old but I amazed with how much food she can pack away now that she's two!

My DD has never been a fan of table food after 12 months. She use to gobble up everything so feeding solids was never a huge concern for me until recently. She just doesn't seem to like food, not even junk food, like chips, cup cakes, cookies, cake balls, or frosting! She LOVES ice cream and frozen yogurt though so at least I have something to work with for desserts.

She is now 17 months and just nibbles and I would describe it as eating as little as possible just to survive. I have actually lost weight eating with her because I eat slower now and nibble too. She's always been in the 40-50 percentile for weight and height and is happy and learning so I am just going to keep trying to offer different foods.

@Greentea: That is interesting! She's never been a massive eater but up until a month or so ago she definitely ate more for breakfast (often had seconds!) and dinner.

My LO had a stage where she was not a big eater. It was until about 14-15 months, maybe? Honestly I lowered my standards- I started letting her have yogurt with sugar and salmon with maple, and started giving her takeout. Kid loves food, turns out- just professionally cooked!

It seems to be common for young toddlers to go through this stage when they are transitioning from bm/formula to more real food- at least I have observed this on hb.

My philosophy was to give her all the hemp milk she wanted- so that at least she was getting that. I know not everyone feels that way, however. It worked for us and now she's like a vacuum :)

My kid does. not. eat. I can't believe she is the size she is (she's around 50% now although she has been down to 10ish at times). I don't have any advice for you except that somehow they survive!!

It doesn't sound like she's doing too bad! But that is a lot of whole milk (it's very filling) so she just might not be very hungry afterwards. Is that the only milk she gets all day?

@illumina: My LO (17 mo) is also not a big eater. He is pretty chubby and I really don't know how he keeps that weight on! Its even worse right now because he is teething. He's refusing to eat any fruit or veggies right now, ugh! thank goodness for grreen smoothies.

The 8oz of WCM seem like a lot at one time to me. Thats probably whats keeping her full between meals and why she doesn't need snacks. Could you offer her smaller amounts of milk more frequently? Then she might eat a little more food. My LO only drinks a few oz of milk at a time, about 4 times per day. Prob only about 10oz total for the day. He also drinks water throughout the day.

I go by the same mantra as @rachiecakes: If he eats one decent meal a day, it's been a successful day. He almost never eats dinner.

@illumina: I think it sounds like she's eating well enough. As long as she's not jumping back percentiles, I'm sure she's fine. I know it's hard when I'm around friends' kids who eat anything and everything, but my kid is in no way staving, so he must be getting enough for his body.

If her weight is following her percentile, I wouldn't worry. I would also keep track of what she's eating over the course of a week, and look at it from a macro perspective. It might surprise you.

If DS eats one good meal a day, I call it a success! I've just realized that 3 square meals just don't work for him. (he's going to be 3 in December) I will always offer, but if he has banana and yogurt for breakfast, he might have a cracker with cheese and an apple slice for lunch and then eat a huge dinner with us.
I try to always do my best to offer a healthy variety and hope for the best!
(he's growing right along his curve as well!)

My 21mo eats well at breakfast, really well at lunch (daycare's sheets often indicate that he had 2 helpings of lunch!), but then often barely touches his dinner. And it's been that way for as long as I can remember. He'll go through spurts (like the past 2 days) where he's like a freaking Hoover at dinner, but usually he eats a few bites and declares "Done!"

Sounds like your LO is doing just fine! Her intake will continue to creep up as her tummy grows!

My LO is a month younger, and some days she eats a ton while other days eats barely anything. She's following her curve as well, so I try not to worry.

I try to just trust my kid to eat when he is hungry. He has days he eats a lot, and days where he doesnt. He doesnt eat many veggies and is pretty picky right now, but thats what kids do, and i dont think he will starve. He is on the 5th percentile curve and is growing like he should, according to his ped, so i just try not to think about it too much. We offer healthy stuff as much as we can, and the rest is up to him. I think your lo sounds just fine :) i wouldnt worry at all.

ETA: you could try backing off the WCM a bit. I have heard that sometimes kiddos drink too much and get full, and then dont eat as much. Something to consider anyway :)

@cmomma17: I guess that's how we are supposed to eat, as adults right? I mean, I have very little at breakfast and dinner but always have a decent lunch. I'm just worrying because my friend's LO's IRL seem to eat so much!

I think I am coming to terms with the fact that LO (13 months) is just not a big eater. I say *think* because there is still a lot of the time when I second guess myself and wonder if she's holding out for something she prefers--like fruit, I swear she could keep eating fruit until she explodes!

So, breakfast she eats at around 8am and has anywhere between 5-10 spoons of porridge/other baby cereal. Lately it has been on the low side. I don't usually offer a snack, though she does have around 8oz WCM mid-morning.

She has lunch 11/11:30 and eats pretty well (for her!), usually toast or a sandwich made with 1 slice of bread and a topping, then she might have a handful of chicken or ham chunks, a few chunks of cheese and then a plate of various fruits.

She has another 8oz of WCM mid-afternoon and usually a small box of raisins. or handful of fruit...sometimes if we're busy I forget to offer a snack and it doesn't seem to bother her. Then dinner is at 6pm and she barely touches it...maybe a few spoons or a few veggies (even things I know she likes) and then she's done.

What do you think? Is this normal or should she be eating more?

Edited to add--her weight gain follows her curve centile (25%) beautifully.
