That was over 6 years ago, but my younger brother went about 2 years ago to the same place for his honeymoon and talked it up even more than I did. It is my fav vacation I've ever been on. There wasn't a ton to do in terms of like, events, at the resort. But in terms of awesome beach and relaxing and good food and nice rooms, loved it. </p> <p>On the flip side, my parents just got back from Secrets Aura Cozumel and did not like it. I'll report back and tell you how it is.</p> <p>We've been to Playa del Carmen (in riviera maya) 4 times, and we loooove it. We may be the the exception, but we actually prefer to stay non-AI. We stay at the same little waterfront hotel on the beach in town and it's about $130/night. The food in town is so good (and safe! It's all tourists) and cheap that the trip ends up being way cheaper and (IMO) better than staying on a resort. So nice to eat and drink whatever, whenever you wanted without worrying about carrying money around. There was a private beach, all the rooms were ocean view, the weather was perfect and we had such an amazing vacation. We traveled during hurricane season, so we went to the pacific side of Mexico, since it's not hit as often. Best idea ever and the excursions (selvatica and a trip to Tulum) were the highlight of our trip. AI resorts are the best--so nice to not have to walk around with a purse and just order whatever you want, whenever you want. If you're going without a LO I highly recommend staying at an adults only resort. My favorite has been the Valentin Imperial in Riviera Maya. We loved Excellence Playa Mujeres. We bought a time share kind of thing for the "Palace" resorts. There are several of them, some adults only, others for everyone. So far we've stayed at Moon Palace in Riviera Maya and Cozumel Palace. Both were very nice, good food, great staff. </p>
