@paigeface: this made me lol. My post c BM was equally as awful and painful. After my second C it was so terrible and DH wasn’t home and I contemplated what would happen if I died on the toilet or had to call 911. Maybe dramatic but it was pretty painful. This time I started taking stool softeners before I even went in for surgery and ordered prune juice as soon as I was allowed.

I just had my second c-section 9 weeks ago (first was emergency) but with both I only bled for about 3 weeks. It was annoying but I have friends who delivered vaginally that said they bled longer. I stocked up on heavy pads (take as many as you can from the hospital because they are the best!) and I bought tucks wipes. Those mesh undies they give you are godsend and I washed mine on a gentle cycle and they held up as well. I agree that you MUST start taking stool softeners as soon as you can. The first BM after both my c-sections was the worst pain and I dare say even worse than the incision itself (in my personal opinion!) I forgot to start taking the softeners this time being so busy with two little's and first BM was an absolute nightmare. Funny story, I locked our bathroom door for privacy from my toddler for the first BM after birth and It was SO painful I screamed. Made the mistake of having my newborn in there with me in her dock-a-tot and she started crying. My DH had to basically bust down the door to get in to make sure we were OK. :silly:

Comfy PJ's with buttons are also awesome to have and Target has some awesome ones I lived in https://www.target.com/b/stars-above/-/N-g0mql
Slippers are also really nice to have as well. Scheduled C-section for me was much easier and I have fully healed at 8 weeks. Good luck to you! You'll do awesome! :goodluck:

@purplepumps: Oh yeah definitely the hospital mesh or something else high waisted and soft waistband (like not the scratchy elastic, the ones wrapped in cotton). I got high waisted maternity ones that folded over and they were heaven. Also high waisted or even specific postpartum leggings. The waistband has to to well above your incision or it rubs and hurts. For me even maternity leggings and jeans were a no because they had a horizontal seam that hit right along my incision.
Or get lots of flowy nightgowns and dresses. My first was a September baby and it was still hot so I wore a lot of empire waist dresses and nightgowns around the house.
2nd was February so lots of the high waist compression leggings. Blanqis.

ETA: these underwear are amazing. Even the seam was soft and didn’t bother me. I was so sad when I finally lost some weight and couldn’t wear them anymore.

Just a regular always was fine for me for a week, like a regular beginning of a period. And then random spotting for another month, just a liner. Unless you want to keep using the hospital mesh panties (which I hated cause it just didn't feel right), get a few pairs of super high granny panties that will go above your incision while it's healing. I got these beauties for cheap that worked out well (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BHJRNKW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

The amount of bleeding I had was basically the same for my c section and vaginal. Surprisingly, I’d say I even bled more/ longer after my csection than my other birth and that was after having lost a litre of blood in surgery.

Anyway, you only need pads, woohoo! And it doesn’t hurt to sit on your bum, also woohoo haha. It seems that the majority of people have less bleeding though because they suck out a whole bunch of blood during surgery. I wore the hospital mesh underwear for two weeks probably because it was very high, thin, stretchy, and comfy and was nowhere near my scar. I just put them in my washing machine and they held up alright. I didn’t have any constipation issues and was eating prunes and beet salad the day after surgery to keep things regular. I did have some bad gas pain in my tummy for a week or so that was uncomfortable and I tried to drink lots of ginger tea to soothe that symptom.

I know you didn’t ask this, but roll to the side to stand up or get off the couch or bed and use your arms, try not to engage your core or an muscles or anything. That’s the major difference between a csection and vaginal for sitting, lying down, and moving around I feel.

I had a vaginal birth with my first and planned c-section with my second. I don’t remember the bleeding being all that much different. The biggest change was just being able to wipe with toilet paper, and not needing the ice pads. I agree about the constipation - start taking colace a day or 2 before the surgery! But while it hurts the incision to strain, that (to me) is so so so much better than feeling like your lady bits are going to rip open.

@DillonLion: I've had 2 c-sections. With my second, I had my post c-section bleed for about 1-1/2 weeks. My next [actual] AF was 4 mos later (while BF-ing).
In the hospital, they give you mesh panties and "diaper" pads that fit inside after a C/S. I was OVER those by day 2. I had DH pick me up some Depends in a size larger than I needed (* easier to pull down after surgery AND makes it easier for docs and nurses to check you post-op.). They were AH-MAZING until I was ONLY bleending enough to only need maxi-overnight pads.
Something not many people may think of (or need) but I appreciated was (1) my own surgical pajamas (* they sell cute patterns online) with BF-ing access for the first 3 days and (2) a lush or comfy robe for "walking the halls" post-OP. It felt awesome to change into clean P.J.s and they were accessible for hospital staff to run checks. FWIW - Days 4 and 5 in the hospital, I wore a regular "night gown set" along with my robe and a comfy pair of slippers.

My bleeding always lingers for a long time (I’ve had 3 c sections). The first couple of days are just like a heavy period, after that it’s pretty light or just spotting but it lasts around 5 weeks for me.

This is probably tmi but since you asked about what you might need, I get really constipated after c sections (not helped by the pain medication either) so I stocked up on preparation h, tucks, and colace.

I have heavy periods as it is, so I had to use those Mack daddy ones they give you in the hospital or Depends. I think I only bled like 2-3 weeks though!

I remember the first night, a couple hours post c/s, when I stood up for the first time to try to go pee, I was dripping blood all over the floor (through the gigantic pad I was wearing). After that, it was like a heavy period. I switched to regular pads after returning home (I stayed at the hospital for the 3 days). I do remember buying the overnight pads too, but I didn't use the whole box. I used the Always regular w/ wings btw lol

I had a planned c-section after my 2nd and I didn't need more than a heavy pad. I bought the giant overnight pads preparing for the worst after having lots of tearing with my first, but I didn't need many of those.

It’ll definitely be like a heavy period but from what I’ve gathered its lighter and shorter than vaginal birth (I’ve only had 2 CS).
I might be totally wrong but I thought maybe it’s because they suction a good bit of it out during the surgery. But that’s just my guessing, totally unscientific and I’ve never bothered to look it up. Haha.
I want to say I had heavy bleeding (like bad period) for about a week and then light-moderate for another week or two after that. Towards the end it was truly like spotting. I never had to use more than a heavy flow pad.

I'm having a planned c-section for my 2nd baby next week. My first baby was a vaginal birth and I tore, used all kinds of pads/witch hazel/dermoplast/etc and bled like crazy for 2 months.

What was your vaginal bleeding like after a c section? I'm just trying to get stocked up on necessities.
