I hate hearing the word diet when it comes to pregnancy, it scares me for the pregnant mom and her child. I think if you just eat balanced, nutritious meals, your body knows what to do. There is always the to get it off after your pregnancy.

Your body knows what it needs to do.Don't diet unless your doctor becomes concerned!! I gained a ton of weight (50lbs) and while it sucked and depressed me for a while, it didn't seem to matter what I ate or how much I exercised..the pounds just piled on. Eventually I just gave in and ate! Don't stress, your body is doing an amazing thing and if it needs the calories, give them to it! :)

It is far more dangerous to gain too little than it is to gain too much. Ithink our bodies know whatbthey are doing and if youre hungry, especially when pregnant, you should be eating.

As long as youre eating healthy, I dont know that I would worry.

I gained by big leaps like that too. :/ By 22 weeks, I had gained 20lbs.

@pinkhorse: I like your attitude. :) I worried about my weight gain a lot but I knew in my heart that my nurses were wrong and I would be fine. Still it was hard to watch the numbers climb.

For whatever reason (probably also because I've started both pregnancies a bit overweight) I don't tend to gain much, despite not watching what I eat at all and often eating total crap. With my first, I gained 23 lbs, and at 31 weeks I've gained about 10 lbs thus far. I have a lot of issues with nausea, which has meant that I go through phases where I just eat crackers all day long, or that I eat carbs constantly throughout the day since I have so many other food aversions (like, hashbrowns and a plain biscuit from McDonalds for breakfast for weeks on end).
I really feel like so much of pregnancy weight gain, unless you're really strict or on a special GB diet or something, is just subject to your own body's quirks.

@pastemoo: I SO agree with you--I get nervous when women start freaking out over their weight gain while pregnant. I'd much rather put on more weight and have a big, healthy baby. (Not that if you DON'T put on a lot of weight you won't have a healthy baby.)

My doctor said: eat when you're hungry. So I do. But now that I'm 33 weeks, I can't eat NEARLY as much!
I've gained about 20 pounds so far. Not too bad, but I could really care less one way or the other (unless I had gained like 100 pounds, which would be a tad excessive)--what will be will be!

I'm 26 weeks and I've gained 16 pounds. Between weeks 18 and 22, I gained 7 and started worrying because that felt like a lot for one month. I had another appointment at 25 weeks and didn't really do anything different and I only gained 1.

As long as you're eating healthy and trying to make good choices most of the time, I think you're fine! Your body will do what it needs to do.

I always thought "watch what you eat, gain on the low end". NO. I had gained 15 by 20 wks and was scared but ended at 27-30ish by 39 wks. My son was 8 lbs and I had high fluid...losing the actual weight afterwards was pretty easy. I think if you just try to make mostly healthy choices it will work out fine! Your body is going to put on whatever you need!

I didn't eat more and gained a TON--then while BFing I ate a ton and lost weight. Pregnancy and the related hormones are weird. Don't diet--just be good to yourself and worry about it after. Your body knows what to do.

@MamaBehr: I gained a TON of weight and I didn't really change my vegetarian diet at all. First trimester I honestly couldn't stomach much more than crackers and pasta but I ate much less than I would normally. I did develop Pre-E and the swelling was out of control.
My doctor never seemed concerned as far as my weight was. And I did gain and lose the weight without too much effort. (Though I did hang on to 10lbs until I was almost finished breastfeeding. If I wasn't drinking water by the gallon I'd notice a dip in my supply.)

So, with this being my third pregnancy you think I wouldn't be crazy about this but I am! I'm 19 weeks 3 days and I have gained about 15 lbs so far, which isn't too bad (with previous pregnancies I gained about 50lbs with both), but that isn't my concern. Last month I gained 7 lbs. SEVEN POUNDS!!! So I decided to go on a diet and really watch what I was eating, in three weeks I didn't gain a pound, and then starting Friday I stopped being ridiculous about calorie counting and just ate what I was hungry. I gained 4 lbs. FOUR POUNDS IN FIVE DAYS. This is not normal, right? What am I doing wrong? Do I really need to meticulously calculate what I am eating in order to not gain too much? Ugh, I'm so frustrated with myself.
