@winniebee: Honestly, they're very similar. I enjoy montessori's focus on practical life skills, but RE probably hits some of that stuff too. If you've had a good experience with one, you'll likely love the other.

@JoyfulKiwi: based on what I've read and comparing schedules they seem similar. Except at Reggio instead of a work period it's "choice time". It's still self directed learning but more of a focus on play and imagination, I think. But the routine is all there. Thanks!

Most of all, I love that it's focused on being respectful of the individual child. Children are taught how to be productive & independent & trusted to make their own choices. It's also a much calmer atmosphere.
I have a little bit of experience with Reggio & think they have some overlap in philosophy, so that may help with a transition.

Even though it's more of an academic focused school, she loves telling me about the "work" she does and enjoys "practicing" at home. It's a much calmer environment compared to regular daycare (play quietly at their desks) but they still make sure they get to run around and play in the gym/playground. I think the biggest thing Montessori has taught her is how to stay focused and increase her attention span. It's a very enriched program - they have music and French classes, guest speakers, yoga, etc. They had two members of the city orchestra come to perform for the kids and talk about music. I know that programs will differ, but they really try to instil a love/curiosity for learning that I appreciate.

Sorry for the novel. It's only been 2 months but I have been very happy so far.

@winniebee: When I taught an afterschool class, the kids were more interesting. :)
No experience as a mom though!

I'm considering switching T to a Montessori school since we are moving towns and his current school (Reggio Emilia, which I love) is going to be 20 minutes each direction from our home. Add in the winter commute in Maine and that's 2 hours in the car each day.....There's a well regarded Montessori school right down the street from our new home, though.

So, tell me why you love Montessori!
