I had a midwife and wanted a natural birth. I did NOT get one. During the worst of it an ob came in to consult. He said that in my situation a csection was standard, but that there were plenty of other things to try first. He said he and everyone at my hospital worked hard to preserve vaginal birth. And because of him I eventually delivered vaginally.

I loved my OB. Se was very supportive during my difficult twin pregnancy. She didn't recommend I try a VBAC because i had. already had the previous c section and a surgery on my kidneys. I didn't mind because I wanted the scheduled c section. Se even came in to do my surgery when she was 9 months pregnant. She had her baby a week after mine. She was great.

your ob sounds awesome!

i love my ob group as well! my practice is actually ob's + midwives, and my hospital is home to the only midwifery birthing center in this area of virginia. my hospital actually has the lowest c-section rate in the region, and is less than half of the national average. my practice is the only team that delivers at this (awesome) hospital. the practice is so patient-centered and wonderful -- they really focus on the mom's comfort, and make sure mom is heard and informed.

as an example, i found out at my last appointment that i have an issue with my cord that really scared me. i emailed one of the ob's, and she called me back at 8:30pm to reassure me. she gave me her cell phone number and told me i could call her anytime if i got worried or had any questions. i couldn't believe a doctor was so concerned about me and my comfort!

I also have also chosen a progressive hospital and while I may not choose to partake in some options, it's nice that it's there! I think my OB and her staff is wonderful. She is highly trained and I feel like she truly takes care of her patients. She has encouraged extra testing and found I had a genetic issue earlier on than most OBs would allow testing. Easily saving me the heartache of another miscarriage or two. I feel like she's a wonderful advocate and won't blow fluff up your butt, either .

@yoursilverlining: our hospitals sound very simililar. I havent even made much of a birth plan because their usual practice are all things I want (skin to skin, baby rooming in, etc)

My OB sounds a lot like yours – she was/is very open to doing whatever you feel most comfortable with. My hospital was the same way. They both support different types of laboring, all the L&D rooms have jetted tubs and showers, exercise balls, yoga mats, etc. and they both supported using massage and other alternate types of pain management. My “mainstream” hospital actually discourages the use of epi until you have labored for quite a while naturally. I never felt pressured by anyone within my OB practice or within the hospital. I ultimately chose to have a scheduled c-section but was not pressured to do so. I trusted my OB, and every other OB at the practice that I met.

From start (first appointment at like 6 weeks along) to finish (c-section, recovery and beyond); everyone involved my husband completely, and respected my wishes completely. I don’t believe anyone there did anything “for their convenience”.

Thanks for posting this! I watched The Business of Being Born and actually found it kind of offensive when they said that OBs have no clue how to do a "normal" birth (I also found their use of the word "normal" as a synonym for "natural" to be offensive, but whatever). That hasn't been my experience so far (of course, I haven't given birth yet). My office has two midwives and two OBs working side by side and they all have equal clout. The office has a very low c-section rate, a very low episiotomy rate, and it open to discussing all sorts of labor preferences. One of the midwives I visited with last time actually said "This office is very liberal, there's very little you'll ask of us that we'll say no to." I don't know if that's not the norm -- and I know there are certainly OBs who push intervention on their patients -- but I hope we're in the majority!

That's so cute!!

I love my OB so much!! She is so friendly and infinitely patient, and she is always put together so well. Her outfits are immaculately put together, her hair is always perfectly blown out into a beautiful bob, and she's almost always wearing heels. I just feel so safe around her because if she can be running around seeing patients all day but still look/act that composed, then I think she can take pretty good care of me! It sounds very superficial... I don't know why it puts me at ease so much. I'm really picky about my doctors and I just love her so much.

My OB was great at accomodating my wishes to have a natural birth, even when I had complications she was always nice and talked with me and was always willing to try things my way first. Even though I ended up with a c-section she didnt push me into it, and never talked down to me like some doctors do. She also assured me that she does vbacs so my next baby can be a natural birth

I am glad you love your OB as well! I truly think that I have the best OB and I feel so confident in her care. She has never pressured me into any tests or interventions during labor and she always listens and talks to me during appointments without me feeling rushed. She is also very conservative when it comes to pregnancy which is great for me since I am a paranoid freak. She also explains both sides of things which I think is great also.

I always wonder how many actual "evil" OB's that are supposedly out there. None of my friends have them either.

I just wanted to give some love to the OB option for prenatal care.

My OB is one of the only ones in my area who will do VBACs (and he has a really high success rate) and is happy to support unmedicated births and has recommendations for a doula if wanted. He has an adorable Facebook page where he posts all of his births and always shares photos with info like "Successful VBAC!" "Natural labor, no drugs" etc. I feel like he is the best of both worlds with the medical background, but open and supportive to the natural process of birth (or whatever birth the mom is looking for).

Anyone else care to share their positive OB experiences?
