I temp whenever I wake up. During the week it's either 5:30 or 6:00 a.m. and I haven't noticed much of a difference between the two times. It does vary if I temp much later, like 8:00 a.m., for example.

@HazelEyes: I think the problem may not be the varying temp times, but when I lay there half asleep for more then 2 minutes, my temp seems to regulate back to 98.6.

@T.H.O.U.: Hm, yeah, those are significantly different. Mine seem to hover around 97.1 to 97.3. Maybe your temp time is just going to have to be 5 am (ugh)

@HazelEyes: Thanks, the past few mornings I've been waking up early and trying to lay still/rest until closer to the "temp alarm" time. However, this morning I went ahead and temped at 5:05 am and I think I got a more accurate "resting" reading (97.7 vs 98.6 after waiting).

@T.H.O.U.: When I was temping, I woke up within the same 20min range every morning and on weekends I just kept the same wake up schedule to temp, but went back to sleep (This is a 4:40am wake up, by the way!) It wake so early during the week, it'd be impossible to keep it consistent if I did it any other way.

Seemed to work out pretty good- my temps were consistent enough.

@T.H.O.U.: I set two alarms, one for temping at 6am and one for my "real" wake up time, 6:30. I usually go right back to sleep in between the two. On the occasion I wake up before the 6am alarm I try and fall back asleep/rest until 6 and its usually approx the same temp as the days I wake up with just the alarm.

I just wanted to bump this and see if anyone had other thoughts? I wake up within a 30 minute range (5:30-6am). I really can't loose more sleep by setting the alarm any earlier!

I never noticed that 30 min made a difference. Just temp when you wake up. Personally, I wouldn't adjust. Everyone's body is different and your's might not be so "textbook" that the adjusting would be perfect. Mine certainly wasn't.

@Mrs.Someone: agree. I think I remember reading on FertilityFriend that they don't recommend you adjust your temps, although I'm not sure if my memory is right on that one. I think a half hour is an acceptable range.

@Amreis: you may want to experiment to see how easily your temperature changes. In TCOYF, the author explains that some women's temps will change quickly/easily, while others stay more stable for a bit. Take your temp if you get up in the middle of the night, then compare it to the rising temp; take it after you've moved around a bit in the morning, etc. It will help you determine how strict you need to be with your temp schedule.

Thanks for the advice! Taking it right when I wake up will be much easier than trying not to toss and turn before my alarm goes off. Haha!

This happened to me my first few months of charting, though I would wake up 2 hours early and needing to pee! I would take it at that time, then adjust, but I noticed later that adjusting wasn't very accurate. I'd suggest taking it at the time you wake up and leaving the temp as is. Especially since its less than an hour. Eventually, I was able to tell myself to go back to sleep and wake up with the alarm so I no longer had the problem.

@FutureMrsMcK: Not to get off track but how did you manage to always have atleast 3 hours of sleep? Right now the only way I'd get that is if I went to bed at the same time as P and temped at like midnight. =/

I've been temping when I wake up in the morning but it's not always after 3+ hours of consistent sleep. =/

glad you asked this - i wake up at different times every day due to dreams/overall poor sleep so i figured temping wouldn't work for me. Great answer, @futuremrsmck , I will remember that!

You should take it right when you wake up and adjust the temp. When I was charting I wasn't waking up at the same time every day so I set an alarm for an hour before the earliest I knew I would wake up (that still afforded me at least 3 hours of sleep), take it and go right back to sleep. It was a pain to wake up, but I kept the thermometer beside my bed and usually barely opened my eyes to check it when it was done, then went right back to sleep. It was sort of a pain to do it like that but it guaranteed consistent temps (and my wake-ups were pretty erratic).

I've been charting my temp for about a week now. The past two mornings I woke up about 30-45 minutes before my alarm has gone off. I've been waiting until my alarm goes off to check my temp so it's taken at the same time every morning. Should I continue this way, or should I take it right when I first wake up? I try not to move around too much because I don't want to make my temp increase before I take it.

Any suggestions?
