Yep I temp every morning at about 5:45 right before I get out of bed. (If I wake up earlier I do it then.)

I don't have a fancy thermometer, just a $10 -- this one I think http://www.amazon.com/BD-524560-Digital-Basal-Thermometer/dp/B0000533AY

It took us 3 months to get pregnant, and on the 3rd cycle I decided to start temping. For me, my fertility signs were pretty obvious, and my cycle was regular, so temping was more of a way for me to confirm that I was ovulating exactly when I thought I was.
I would say it was fun to actually see my temperature shift after ovulation. I'm still pretty wow-ed by all of the interesting things that women's bodies do! Also, my chart gave me a pretty good indication that I might be pregnant, since my temps just kept going up, up, up.

Just re-read my post, I think it was a little unclear. I start charting 7 (or less) days after my period BEGINS, so typically after 5 days of bleeding I'll start temping.

If I started 7 days after my period ended I'd probably come close to missing ovulation!

i have been charting for my last 3 cycles. at first i did it to learn if i was ovulating after getting off of BCP and also to know when my period was on its way, because my cycles started @ 60 days! but now its a good tool to see when i ovulate and if there was any chance of pregnancy that month.

I wish I started temping sooner! I've only been temping for 2 months out of 9 months TTC. I've learned so much, and it keeps me from obsessing because I know, I will have to just wait until tomorrow morning to see what the next temp does. The only bad side is I've been so excited to see what my temp does that I wake up throughout the night wondering if it's time to temp! But that has only happened twice.
@Leelee - how did you know FF was wrong?

I temped but then stopped because it drove me crazy! I would obsess over my chart trying to figure out if every little thing was an early sign. I stopped until the month I took Clomid. When we're ready to try again, I'll probably temp for a month or two just to see what's going on with my body.

I think temping is a good idea. For me personally it taught me when my fertile window was (fertilityfriend was always wrong), when I ovulated and when I got my bfp it was able to see a clear difference in my charts before I even tested. I have the bbt from Walmart and love it. I agree with the others and recommend getting your hubby involved. At first DH thought I was crazy for charting but as time passed he became very interested in what my temps were doing. Goodluck! :)

I really suggest involving your husband in charting. It helps him understand where you are in y our cycle and allow you guys to be more spontaneous rather than "omg we have to have sex I am ovulating" I use the bd basal thermometer from Amazon.

We temp every morning at 6:30, and then go back to sleep if possible. I bought the Target brand Basal Thermometer and we've never had a problem with it. I have a paper chart that Hubs updates temps and sex on and I update CM. I also use fertilityfriend to double check ovulation and symptoms. We used temping and mucus to avoid pregnancy for 18 months, and to try. It's a great system.

@anyonesays thanks for this post! I've been wondering a lot myself. During my preconception appt, my gyno told me not to bother with this until after a year of TTC; but, my OCD A-type personality would like a clearer vision of my ovulation time frames.

I hope to learn lots from this category!

I do my own version of charting. I'll start about 7 days after my period, and then maybe 4 days after I see the spike. It makes ovulation really clear and obvious, and I don't see the point in doing it every day if you're only looking for your fertile window!

My alarm goes off at 6 every morning. I keep the thermometer on my nightstand, lay there for a few seconds while it takes a reading. Some days I have to get up, others I just roll over until 7. No big deal.

Also, if you're wondering, I bought the BD brand basal body thermometer from Amazon.

I took a BBT reading every morning for 3 years! I haven't temped since getting pregnant last March, I need to get back to it now that my post partum periods have settled into a cycle again.

You need a thermometer that goes to the second decimal place, like 98.65. Those are usually the BBT ones, they are in the same place as the regular thermometers.

Really useful info, ladies - thank you!! I love this board; so great to hear about others' experiences with stuff like this.

Stupid question, but are there special devices you use to temp? It's just an oral temp, right? But you need to use a special basal thermometer?

i used fertiliyfriend to track my temps. you can input other info which i loved - like your fertility monitor and/or OPK results, when i did the ivf, i was able to input that too...

i used the charts just for general purposes to see if i could find a trend. it's also good because they give you an average of how long your cycle is, what's your longest, shortest, etc. i was able to see that my luteal phase was around 13/14 days. it's not an exact science. sometimes, i'd have some weird fluctuations in temps, which could be attributable to many things. i liked to see if ovulation matched the opks and i liked to see if the temperature dips at around 13/14 dpo (when i get my period) - always knew i was going to get my period when it dipped. but i definitely didn't rely on the charts and always did the fertility monitor and opks.

good luck!

I've temped and it's really helped me. FIrst, it allowed me to see that I was ovulating, and it has allowed me to see WHEN it happens. It has also helped ease my mind when my cycles have varied. For example, I usually have a 28 day cycle. Last cycle was 30 or 31 days. If I hadn't been temping, I would have been sure I was pregnant. But because of my chart and my temps, I knew I wasn't and that my cycle had just been thrown off.

But to your original question- many, many women conceive without doing any charting what-so-ever so its not necessary to get pregnant, it just helps to have more info. for me it helped me identify a fixable fertility problem early so that I did spend months and months trying only to find out I had this problem.

We temp. We do sympto-thermal Natural Family Planning, both to avoid and to achieve pregnancy. This means temping, checking cervical mucus, and cervix position. I know some people "chart" only using OPKs and the basic info but I am of the mind that more info is better. You can't know for sure when you ovulate, as the luetal phase (LP) isn't standard for all women, mine is 11-12 days but some women have 16 day LP. Likewise I usually O on day 14-16 and some women O on day 22. The easiest way for you to learn these things about your cycle is to temp.

So I'm still new to this whole charting business, and although we're not yet TTC, I'm trying to learn as much about it as I can ahead of time :)

Anyway, I'm wondering how many of you used some form of temping when you were TTC? Is this necessary, or did some of you just do more general charting (ie my period was this time, so I most likely am ovulating these days, etc. etc.)? I guess I'm just wondering how necessary the temping is.

Would love to hear others' experiences!
