I concur the answers above. If it's more than two hours before I usually temp (I'm able to check the time on my fitbit without getting up), I go back to sleep until my usual time. If it's within those two hours and I need to get up, I temp first. On weekends I just temp whenever I wake up -- obviously this is less accurate, but I'm not TTC yet.

On mornings when I temp at an unusual time, I usually throw the numbers into a BBT adjuster like http://www.whenmybaby.com/basalbodytemperature.php to get a better picture of my overall trend. I actually log my numbers in two different apps: (1) the temps as measured in Fertility Friend, and (2) temps with outliers adjusted to my normal wakeup time in Ovia. If FF displays an open circle, I adjust that temp. I find it helpful to reference Ovia when I have doubts about my cycle. I wouldn't have been able to recognize my coverline and ovulation spike this cycle without it! Keeping both sets of data may be more effort than is necessary, but I'm admittedly a numbers person :)

@mrsrain: @periwinklebee: Thank you! I guess I will just keep using the 6am temps even though they are higher than the middle of the night ones. I do get up Togo use the bathroom or just toss and turn. And I'm often woken up several times in the night by a semi-cosleeping toddler. I'm sure my having PCOS doesn't help things. Thanks again!

For me it doesn't matter much if I get up overnight to pee or something (but I don't have to stay up for a prolonged period). What is important though is taking it at the same time. If I have to wake up earlier than normal it will be quite a bit lower and if by some miracle I sleep later, it will be higher. I've been temping long enough now though that I pretty much have a sense of where it should be based on what time I wake up...

When you wake overnight are you getting up? Or just adjusting/rolling over and going back to sleep?

You should temp first thing in the morning before you get up, and temp consistently at the same time. 6am would be just fine if it's preceded by several hours of uninterrupted sleep. If you are getting up a lot, though, (i.e. Breastfeeding a child or struggling with insomnia) then temping may not work accurately.

Hey guys, I have a question concerning temping. I wake frequently in the night (as I'm sure we all do) and I'm not sure when to temp. I've been temping at 6am when I get up for the day, but I sometimes have temper at like 3am when I happen to wake up. The 3am temp is usually significantly lower than the 6am one after O. I just want to make sure I'm doing it right. I know technically it's supposed to be my lowest temp my body goes to, but if I've been temping at 6am should I just keep doing that, even if it's half a degree higher? Thanks!
