My son went through a food strike around that time. I was distraught because he had once eaten pretty well. He barely consumed anything! We know now it was probably a combination of teething and lingering viruses that made his throat hurt. I'd say it lasted 2 weeks but whenever he's sick or off he just stops eating. It's just what babies do I guess. He eats great now usually. Hopefully your little one turns the corner, I'm sure he will!

I would continue to offer a variety of Flavors and textures. I think at your son's age some babies just aren't ready for solids yet. DS was acutally really into crunchier things like puffs, melts, and Cheerios (if your son has teeth) at that age. He never really went for purees or mushy foods. Because he had teeth, we also have him tiny pieces of cheese, which he loved! Keep at it, mama! You're doing great!

My first kid didn't like food except puffs until after she turned one. We just waited for her and she quickly realized food is better than purées as she became a toddler. My other kid wanted real food from a way younger age, so if I had him first I would have worried, but I had nothing to compare to at the time. All this to say I wouldn't really worry about it until at least after the first birthday. As I always heard "food before one is just for fun," and that's what I stuck to with my first. :)

@Purpledaisy: we just went through this with DS. Honestly I have countless post on here asking for help. First question is whether your DS has reflux as a baby? Second question is whether he puts toys in his mouth? My ped also didn't seem concerned in the least and just explained to me that babies with reflux are usually very late on solids and a lot less likely to put anything in their mouths. We honestly just had to wait DS out. He had stage 2 purses at every meal because he would gag and projectile vomit with the slightest texture. (Also want to mention he has 7 teeth) So I slowly everyday would try one meal with a stage 3. Eventually DS started putting toys in his mouth, and one day it's like he just decided he could eat. He was 14.5 months old. So just to be clear my child ate nothing but puréed food until 14.5 months old, and my ped with 30 years experience was perfectly ok with that. Just based off my own research I learned that babies gag reflex is at the front of thier mouth and that overtime by putting things in thier mouth it will switch to the back. I truly believe that DS gag relfex just took longer to switch because he never put anything in his mouth until he was 14 months old, and low and behold 2 weeks later he could eat food. He super picky now at almost 16 months old, but no more gag issues. I'm sorry your going through this, I know how hard it is when parent around you are feeding thier 8 month old enchiladas and your one year old is like "ummm no" lol sorry mama! Your doing great

My now 12 month old was really slow to take to solids (and still isn't a huge fan). I think a lot with him was tied to ear issues, he had nonstop infections from 7 months onward so probably couldn't taste much, but he got tubes about six weeks ago and has been much more interested in trying stuff since then. At his one year appt pedi said to just keep offering so I'm hoping he continues to have more interest.

Have you tried mesh feeders? DS had some gagging issues and loved sucking the juice out of frozen berries. They were a mess to clean, but they paved the way to purees.

@Purpledaisy: for us getting her to allow things into her mouth was the goal, so she did a lot of games with different textured tools to turn it into something fun. That helped for sure. She also suggested experimenting with textures through play, so allowing her to play in the food and not worrying about the eating at first. Are you trying to spoon feed? You could maybe try BLW and just offer safe foods and let him experiment.

@Mrs D: He has 3 bottom teeth. We try every couple of days or so.

@Mrs. Lion: He did have a slight tongue tie that we had snipped awhile back. He loves his pacifier, has zero issues nursing, and puts toys in his mouth... just not food! Did the SLP have any tips that you felt were especially helpful?

@Baby Boy Mom: Thanks for the reassurance. I feel like every baby we know around his age are downing solids and have been for months!

My LO did the same thing! I was getting super worried (my other LOs took to solids much earlier) but just hadn't had the time to deal with it. Then last week she turned 11 months and decided that she does want food after all! I would say she has even been demanding it during meals. So maybe just wait it out a bit longer.

We went through this. We actually went to a feeding therapist who was extremely helpful. We also learned our daughter had a tongue tie and ended up having released. She's 2 now and will eat anything you put in front of her :) the concerning thing for me was how insistent she was about not wanting anything in her mouth. She hated a paci, struggled with nursing, and never ever put a toy to her mouth. Those things combined pushed me to have things evaluated further. Our pediatrician referred us to an SLP who specialized in feeding therapy.

My DS just turned 10 months old a few days ago and he eats zero solids. He will not eat oatmeal, applesauce, puffs, etc. NOTHING. Any food that we do get into his mouth he acts like he is gagging and pushes it right out. The only food that he will even put in his mouth is a chunk of cantaloupe but if a tiny sliver breaks off he immediately starts gagging until he can get it out of his mouth.

We brought this up with his pediatrician at his 9 month check up and he did not seem alarmed and didn't give any advice either. We are thinking we will make an appointment to discuss this again since it has been a whole month with zero improvement.

Has anyone else experienced this? Have any advice on how to get him to accept foods? I am hesitant to even try more food because he does not even want to open his mouth and seals his lips shut when we try to feed him. I don't want to force him to eat. He does not even like it when we just put a taste of something on our finger and touch it to his tongue.

He is EBF and takes bottles of pumped milk just fine if that matters.
