As a side note, I hate how tax documents are very obviously tax documents. But I guess that so the right owner doesn't miss them. But I can see how it could be an honest mistake.

I can definitely see it being an honest mistake. This year DH had some work changes and we were anxious to see how it played out - I opened the W2s as soon as I saw them, I'm not sure I even double checked the name first.

That said I would still keep a very close eye on my credit to be safe if that happened.

My guess is that they were just nosy. People tend to get like that when it comes to money. I doubt they will do anything malicious with the information. Rather, I'll bet curiosity just got the best of them and they playing the on accident card. I'd just be extra viligant on my credit.

You can call the credit reporting agencies and they can put a hold on your account. Basically no one will be able to open a new line of credit without considerable legwork. When I had to do several years ago, it was free. Just make sure you aren't planning to lease a car, get a mortgage in the near future. But it pretty much prevents anyone opening anything new without you knowing. Mine was applied for a year at my request.

It would be really dumb to steal her SSN and do anything with it and then let someone know about it! I'm sure since she is a tenant your dad has all HER info, right?
My credit card gives us free credit monitoring. Capital One but I think a lot of them are doing it now for free.

I would definitely assume honest mistake unless I just didn't have a good feeling about the tenants in general. I've moved several times over the past 10 years and the fact that they've even saved all your sister's mail and made the effort to get it to her seems overly generous to me. I totally get the concern, but I think it would be a very risky/dumb choice since they are your dad's tenants and he likely has all THEIR information if anything happened.

It probably was a mistake but I get the concern. My W2 never showed up last year because my hr person is inept and sent it to my old house. I was paranoid that it is just floating out there but I monitor my credit regularly so I am hoping for the best.

It could have been an honest mistake, since it's that time of year she may have been eager to open her own and just did it without thinking. Agree that if they were trying to be shady they prob wouldn't have given it back at all. But, I guess I'm not an identity thief so not sure what they'd do :silly:

Other than this, what are the feelings on this tenant? Is there a reason to think they could be shady?

But if she's really worried, we use Life Lock.
I do the basic $9.99 per month just monitors credit.
My husband does the biggest one (I think around $30) because he's had more fraud instances than me and also more to lose. We've both been happy with it.

I can see it being a honest mistake. I sometimes don't pay attention to the name and stuff on the envelope. Plus, I think if they did have bad intentions they would've opened up other mail.

No insights into security things she can keep an eye out for.

@MrsLilybugg: Mine and my coworkers information was stolen at work last year thanks to HR ineptitude. They paid for a year of identity guard for us which is $20 per month - it alerts you to any suspicious activity on any accounts you ask it to guard. Worth checking into maybe to be safe if she is worried.

Social security won't provide a new number until there is proven identity theft. I had my card stolen and they wouldn't do anything. I was told to monitor my credit closely.

So my sister used to live in my dads two-family house in one of his units. She moved, changed her address with post office etc. today my dad and I visit her and he hands her a stack of mail that had still come to her old apartment. Everything is unopened except her W-2. He says that the new tenant thought it was hers and opened it. BUt it had my sisters name on it, and her place of employment on the return address. And she wondered why of all the mail that was was sent there, only the one with her social security number would be opened.

Honest mistake?

She's concerned about identity theft, selling of her information etc. (and yes, why give my dad the opened w2 at all and not just sell the info and play dumb, if identity theft was the plan)

Anyway what do you think? Any way to be proactive? I told her to just keep an eye on credit report. But have no idea if there's anything else she can do in case they are selling her social security number .
