@birdofafeather: Ooh - I'd love any tips you have for California tent camping with an infant. We are BIG campers (mostly backpacking in the Sierras, but several more plush/gourmet car camping trips a year, too).

I'm due in August and live in the Bay Area and was hoping to do at least one tent camping overnighter with baby before the rainy season starts, just to break the seal on camping with LO, as the outdoors have been such a big part of our identity pre-baby and I really don't want to lose that. That said, we'll probably be aiming for our first trip to be our annual family tradition which is an October trip to a favorite campground in the Napa wine country--the weather is usually still pretty mild.

I plan to BF and maybe just set up a Baby Bjorn travel crib in our big old car-camping tent for baby to sleep in? Any other tips/logistics I should keep in mind? I'm a first-time mom, so it's all new to me!

I backpacked the W-trek in Chilean Patagonia when I was 7 weeks pregnant with this LO so hopefully she has camping in her blood!

@HabesBabe: uh yeah, that would have stopped me too! yeeps!

we totally had help with my family, so i get it! i read that you were going with friends i thought, so i think more hands helps! one or two people to wrangle the kiddos and then one or two people to make dinner, etc. the nice thing about Leo is that there's nothing to do! just hang at camp and go to the beach. :) we did yosemite, so there was a whole rigamarole to get up and going.... still took us hours to leave camp even though we were up at 630! ha.

Now that I'm pregnant again though, I might be the problem  we are staying at a ranch this summer, so hopefully that'll be a good mix of a bed for mama and outdoors for us all!

@Kimberlybee: thank you! xoxox
@birdofafeather: We ended up not going because I had PP bleeding for 9 weeks... ha. Mostly because the hubs wasn't up for it and thought that C would be crying up a storm the entire night (of course, she STTN before we would've gone). We would've gone to Leo Carrillo which is a TOTALLY family-friendly campground, but he just didn't want to risk it. I'd like to go this year if we could (with a 2 year old and a 4 month old), but we'd have to recruit a grandma or two to help, I think, because it would be too much to have one person making dinner while the other tried to keep two kids happy!

@HabesBabe: oh man! why didn't you end up going? i'm pretty sure i know where you usually go camping since there aren't many beach camping spots in malibu. my GF goes all the time and it's totally doable. so many noises when you're camping that i'm not worried about my neighbors!

@Kimberlybee: We ended up not going that year (oh man, was that really two summers ago?), or last year (her sleep in new places at 1 year was horrrrrrrrible. We rented a beach cottage for 3 nights and she cried every night). BUT we are going next summer for sure (2015)! We can't go this year, because I'm due with #2 in May, so we'd have a toddler AND a newborn...

I think I'd skip this year. Those temps seem high for a little one, and my only experience is with my DD who was still waking (crying) 4-5 times a night at that age. That said, they're more portable at that age than others, and maybe yours will be a super chill kiddo!

Outside all day with temps in the high 80s to mid 90s? I wouldn't. Logistics aside (and I do think the logistics would be kind of nuts), like @venice4504 said, 2 month olds can't really regulate their body temperature very well. I would definitely not keep my LO outside in the heat all day at that age, regardless of how much shade there is. It just sounds unsafe and like a recipe for a crying, unhappy, not comfortable baby.

Your vag should be healed by then! I had 3rd degree tears and healed by my 6 week OB checkup. At 2 months your LO will eat, sleep, play a little, eat, sleep, play a little. I think you should be fine esp since you'll be nursing. :) have fun!!

Yeah, we'll absolutely be close enough to home. It's in Malibu (not a rustic campground, but not a frou-frou one, either). All of the sites share about 6-7 bathroom areas, so we'll definitely be close to running water (maybe a 30 second walk?). And I'm bringing tons of lanterns.

There's also dumpsters every 50 yards or so, so I would just toss the dirty diapers into a wet bag in the middle of the night, then empty in the morning. I've read about crunchy moms doing cloth on camping trips, but I don't think I'll be that hardcore yet.

And of course if our LO isn't sleeping well (I think that's what I mean in addition to colic), we won't be going. So I definitely have the comfort and safety of all parties in mind (the baby, us, our friends, and our tenting neighbors).

We went car camping with our son, but he was already 9 months old at the time. We were so worried about him being too cold that we over bundled him at night so he ended up waking up several times. We only went for one night to try it out. All in all, we had a good experience.

I went cabin camping with my 3 month old because I was worried about keeping our neighbors up at night in a tent. It turned out that my baby girl slept through the night at 2 1/2 months so that really wouldn't have been an issue. We had a friend with us that tent camped with her 4 month old and they were fine.

I think the only issue with me would be the weather (other than sleeping through the night). I wouldn't want to keep my baby out in hot or cold weather.

We're attempting tent camping in March as long as the weather is ok. She'll be 7 months. But we live close enough that if all goes wrong we can just come right back home.

My only issue is nighttime. Without a cabin and light or running water close by you could run into issues. Also changing diapers in a tent isn't fun plus where are you going to keep dirty ones or are you walking to the trash? That's also awfully hot since newborns don't have a lot of control over regulating their temps yet. You may want to talk to your pediatrician after the baby is born to get a better handle on how to make it work if it's something you really feel like doing.

Hmmmm....I worry more for your neighbors in the campground listening to a baby cry all night than I worry for you!! That's one thing I notice about camping, you can hear sooooo many things going on around you. I know I wouldn't be happy to hear a baby crying all night/day if I was camping nearby!

So... my husband and I (and our friends) have been going camping during the summer every year for the past decade or so. The past two years we've gone to this super chill campground for car camping. There's plenty of shade, as well as running water, flushing toilets, and hot showers. It's very kid-friendly, and there are tons of paved "roads" to push a stroller around.

Sooooo here's my question. I'm due July 6. We're planning on going Labor Day weekend or sometime after. Average highs that time of year are in the high 80s to mid 90s. That means bebe will be around 2 months old. I plan on EBF and won't go if my vag is still healing, the baby has colic, or either one of us is sick.

Most 2 month olds I know just sleep all day, poop, and chill out. I plan on wearing a Moby or some sort of carrier, and bringing our stroller and bouncy chair to keep bebe entertained. Probably a pack n play w/ bassinet for nighttime, and lots of layers (lows should be in the 60s) and a mosquito net to go over the bassinet.

Has anyone gone tent camping with a teeny tiny little one before? I've read on other forums that it's not so bad, especially since the kid isn't mobile yet, putting rocks and poison ivy into their mouths.
