I suffer from terrible eczema on my hands, I found that one of the main culprits is sodium lauryl sulfate. I switched to an Sls free hand sops and shampoo, it helped a ton, washing in like warm water, not hot also helps.
I use this soap that I find at Target https://shop.seventhgeneration.com/Natural-Hand-Wash.html?sku=129

@yellowbird: we had the same problem when we started potty training. Her poor little hands were cracking and even bleeding in spots.

I kept a tub of CeraVe by the bathroom sink we used the most. After every hand wash we dried really well and put the cream on. Every. Single. Time. Then every night we also lathered on aquaphor. After about a week or two it helped immensely! Now it's mainly gone.

Also we are using Dr bronner Castille Soap mixed with water in a foam dispenser. Like a 1:5 ratio?

ETA: I would close the bathroom door so she couldn't run off when I'm drying her hands and putting lotion on.

I get really bad Dyshidrotic Eczema from hand washing. I've tried hydrocortisone and even prescription creams, but the only thing that works consistently is frequent moisturizing.

What works best for me is using super mild hand soap (no triclosan, no SLS if you can find it). Also, my dr recommended putting lotion in the bathroom next to the sink to use every time you wash. I like lotions with colloidal oatmeal.

We had some really awful eczema flair up around LO's mouth. Doctor suggested either aquaphor or even Vaseline, and then 15 minutes later hydrocortisone. She said it was to prevent the stinging.

@yellowbird: I have their lotion too and it doesn't really do anything. The balm is alot thicker and soaks in better. I've seen it at my local Target and Nordstrom for about $14. A little pricey, but I feel like it's worth it.

@yellowbird: @swurlygurl: our pediatrician has recommended that we use hydrocortisone on K since before he was 1 (to treat exzema). Her rationale is that the next step would be Rx steroid cream, which is much stronger, so using the hydrocortisone more frequently is actually less harsh.

@MrsRcCar: oh yeah! I'm planning on asking @sorrycharlie about it. She's my go to Ava lady :)

@MaryM: omg! That could be it. She's scared of the hot water and always says it's too hot so I put it on cold. Def gonna warm it up!

@Greentea: thanks for the recommendation!

@Ms.Badger: I don't think that would work because she twirls her hair to fall asleep at night. :(

@tiramisu: I use their lotion on her and it doesn't really help but I've never tried the balm. Do they have it at target or do you get it online?

This happened to me after I had my DD. I switched to cetaphil soap. It is sooooo mild and worked like a charm. I also had to be careful to blot my hands dry and not rub them.

@yellowbird: the best soap to use is kirk's original castile coco bar soap. I really recommend it! The best lotion I have found is this random brand called "Hempz" age defying. I hope she feels better!

@yellowbird: Is she using really cold water?

My skin gets tough and itchy in the winter because we have no warm water at work. the icy water is really rough on my skin and they basically end up chapped. Maybe trying to get her to use warmer water might help a little?

@Mrs. Coral: nope! We have soft soap regular. I don't like the antibacterial kind. I think it could be partially because I have a hard time drying her hands all the way too because she runs off.

I'm gonna get some mild soap and some lotion to put on after every wash I think. I guess I need to get some for daycare too.

I get really bad eczema from hand washing and really just daily life, and the ONLY thing that helps is hydrocortizone. And if I forget to apply it at least 3x/day it comes right back. I don't know if it's recommended for toddler use though...?

can you switch to a VERY mild soap, like cetaphil? I used to get really bad eczema when I was in a chem lab a lot...and it sucked soooo bad. Plus, does she really need to wash all the way up to her elbow??

My lo has been washing her hands a lot more since potty training. Now her hands are red, raw and painful. I put aquaphor on nightly but it's not helping. Is there anything I can do?

Do I need a special soap or cream? She apparently has very sensitive skin. :(
