I think they say Terrible Twos because they are going up 6 months and down 6 months from their second birthday. So 18-30months. At least that is the way with LO. She was the worst at about 25 months. I always thought it was 2-3 years but not for us.

I think LO was probably actually more challenging at 1.5 years than at 2.5 years (his current age)- LO is really verbal, and I think he gets a lot less frustrated now that he is able to express himself and ask questions and express preferences. I think he also appreciates the independence that has come from improved gross and fine motor skills.

@irene: Lol, my LO usually freaks out the second we walk through the waiting room door! She hates the scale, and since that's first it's always a bad start. Usually we can't even get a real accurate weight, but last time the nurse stayed in the room and I took LO to the scale by myself. We've also weighed her with me holding her and then I had to weight myself. I hate seeing friends post pictures on facebook of their kids smiling happily with their doctors at their checkups! But she is actually getting better as she gets older.... her 2 year wasn't a complete meltdown.

I think somewhere around 14-18 months or so was the hardest for us. Much harder than it is now that she's 2.

I'm not sure if this helps you or not but I always try to remember that my LO isn't giving me a hard time, she's having a hard time.

@MamaBehr: I remember reading somewhere about toddlers having big highs and big lows and tantrums being the only way the have to vent and communicate their emotions and frustrations.

@mediagirl: We have tantrums before 18 months too, and I thought that was bad.... but not like THAT!!!

Strangely, today LO acts like an angel, again. Maybe he was really upset at us shopping yesterday instead of doing anything fun with him.

@artbee: LO hates the doctors too! There was not one time that he could be calm and not be kicking and screaming :(. He's usually very sweet though (when not in a tantrum outbreak). I sensed that our doctor suspected him having issues (eg. autism) because for twice now (15 and 18 months well check up), he frowned and said, does he behave like this normally? We said, no, it is just with you! Well. I hope it is not a true concern, because I am not sure if other kids are already acting more like civilized human beings while mine is still behaving like a caveman (thus the concern).

@creativemomma15: everything i read indicated that it was normal ... he never did it so hard that he hurt himself beyond the point of just crying that we know of, so we would basically just tell him "no" and ignore so that he'd stop on his own -- didn't want him to associate it with attention, you know? But yeah, the crib thing is scary. We have some padded teething rails that might help, but of course that's only for the top of the bars.

My nephew is 20 months and is a head banger. My brother is going crazy about it. I think we just have to wait them out?

Your 18 month olds tantrum sounds like my 14 month old!!

@Mrs. Yoyo: ours is awful... were you concerned? My DS even had a bruise on his forehead from it sometimes. We are kind of at a loss of what to do about it. Sometimes when he is fighting a nap or bedtime he will bang his head on his crib too. We never know what to do, if you go to him he will just learn to bang his head when he wants out, but if you let it go he gets hurt. Any tips?

@creativemomma15: my LO has done the head banging too. It isn't so bad anymore, but how he'll hit himself in the head, which isn't much better.

Yes! Ugh, I am exhausted of the tantrums already, however I think we have some teething issues too. DS is 17 months old. Also, when he throws a tantrum he bangs his head on the floor/door/whatever he is closest to so I don't feel like I can completely ignore the tantrum or anything. I just want the head banging to stop.

My doctor told me this would happen at her 18 month apt. I think she thought lo was acting out..... But she's really just shy and doesn't like strangers poking and prodding at her. But yes, the tantrums did start earlier then 2.... And just keep getting worse.

I am experiencing this a little as well, DS will be 18 months on the 22nd. I am chalking it up to he has a distinct opinion, knows what he wants, doesn't understand why he can't get what he wants, and lets out his frustration the only way he can.... screaming. It isn't too bad, but that could be because I'm just on the cusp of it, or because I've gone through it once and it doesn't bother me as much as it did the first time around (I was expecting it this time!).

My LO is going on 26 months. But yeah, we've had it periodically since around 18 months, I'd say. I've found that it tends to go in cycles: he'll have a day or two or three where he's bonkers, and then he'll be an angel for awhile, and then he goes bonkers again. It's getting a little bit better as he gets more verbal, but we definitely still have those days. Hang in there.

Did I not get the memo or toddler goes crazy by 18 months??

Today was horrible, one of the worst behaved days from LO up to date. He just turned 18 months 1.5 weeks ago and we literally just got back from his 18 month well visit. Funny thing is my friend who has the same age baby (hers is 3 days older than LO), and she was just complaining about the same thing.

Today we went out to do some shopping (Tax-free day where we are). He whined to get held, not by his dad, but by me! He usually likes to walk around on his own but no, he needs to be held today BY ME. ?????? If I hand him to daddy he'd cry, scream and struggle. If I put him down and ask him to walk he'd cry, scream and struggle. Then he took husband's wallet when he was paying for something, and when husband got it back from him, he cried and cried all the way from the mall to where our car is! DH had to carry this crazy child as if we were these clueless parents who doesn't know what we were doing (maybe we were, but this hasn't happened before in THIS magnitude). He won't let us strap him down in the car and he'd cry hysterically if we attempt to do that! And he slept well last night and napped 2.5-3 hours so I can not blame exhaustion!

What is going on? Did I not get the memo? Is this happening to you too?
