I was tested for immunity and failed both Rubella and Measles. I then got a booster (this was before TTC). During pregnancy, I still didn't have measles immunity, but they didn't want me to get another booster because a third likely wouldn't work. But they did test me for it as a matter of course. This was prior to the outbreak even.

MMR is a live vaccine so you can't get it during pregnancy. That's why they all say boost after delivery!

I'm from Alberta, Canada. They tested me during pregnancy and found I wasn't immune to Rubella so I got the MMR shot at our 1 week pp checkup. They didn't mention anything about my FI getting checked or getting the booster for that one. They did give both FI and I the dtap shot at the same visit though.

Adding...they told me that after this MMR booster if I am tested during another pregnancy and still not immune they don't give it again as it won't help.

In my midwife practice it's just standard, right now at least. I asked about it and they'd already done it.

@Rockies11: Interesting that that just give you an additional booster in Canada. But they don't give the booster to your partner do they?

I just talked to my husband and he said he'd be willing to be tested for immunity if I wanted him too. I guess we will both just do it and get boosters if necessary. This outbreak will probably get worse, so it's just one extra test.

@littlejoy: I don't know why they didn't suggest just getting the booster.... my doctor specifically asked me to be tested for immunity. Good question though.

@SleepyMonkey: Similar situation to you. I was tested at some point during my last pregnancy and the test showed that I was no longer immune. I got a booster a day or two after LO2 was born. My doctor told me not to get pregnant again within a month of getting it because it is a live virus (as if I was already thinking about getting pregnant with a 2 day old in my arms!).

I didn't know i was tested for it but i got an mmr boooster in the hospital i think because my ob gyn had found out i wasn't immune. I assumed it was mmr but maybe it was just rubella. All i know is i can't get pregnant in the next couple of months because of birth defects.

Could he just get a booster now? I'm not educated enough on boosters as an adult to know if that's a viable option, but skipping the test would just mean one less visit to a lab/doctor.

I guess I'd treat it kind of like pertussis. The risk was low, but the rish was there. We both got the tdap when I was pregnant to hope for some immunity for babe.

where I am in Canada, they just give you the booster shortly postpartum. I actually ended up getting it a couple of times!

@pui: I most likely will do that. I am also concerned that it might just be the way my body reacts to some of these diseases and vaccines. My blood work also concluded that I am not immune to the chicken pox even after having those vaccine shots as a child. It's all very confusing right now.

I think there is likely confusion here. It is standard to get checked for rubella immunity in early pregnancy and repeat MMR (because it us a combo vaccine; there us not a plain rubella vaccine) after delivery if not immune. It is common to not have the rubella immunity take, but NOT common for the measles immunity to not take. Last I heard, all if the measles cases were in those that hadn't been vaccinated at all. If you've been vaccinated, I wouldn't be worried.

@Mrs. Shuja: Yep! But you should still get a booster once you give birth! If I were you, I'd try set it up to get the booster while at the hospital after delivery.

It was standard to check at the first pregnancy appt. similarly, it was also common to get a DTap (or is it TDap for adults?) booster in each pregnancy no matter when you had your last one.

@Mrs. Shuja: You may just need a booster. I was also vaccinated as a child (also in Canada) and I wasn't immune when I was tested. After getting one booster I was confirmed immune. You should get a booster after your pregnancy.

Hmmm I don't know if it was part of my routine stuff or not, I'll have to ask at my next appointment. Measles hasn't hit here yet, but whopping cough is going around like crazy. My coworkers 7 week old just tested positive, she's devastated because she got another shot when pregnant and thought they were covered. This scared me!

I am in Canada, so at the beginning of the pregnancy they do blood work to look for things like this. Apparently I fall under the small percentage of people who even though they have gotten there two MMR vaccine shots are not immune to measles and etc. At the beginning it didn't really bother me, because it was in the summer and there wasn't this huge outbreak. Now I am getting a little worried. I'll probably get my DH to get their blood work tested and my sister too.

@danda: @MenagerieMama: I was tested (and am immune) to rubella, however, I have not been tested for measles (and did not previously decline) so at least here it is not standard to be tested for immunity to measles

I was vaccinated as a child, but after some blood work done while preparing for fertility treatments I was shown to be not immune. I had a booster and then was tested again 2 months later to confirm I was immune. I got pregnant without medical intervention shortly after that and even though I was just confirmed immune they made me get the blood work again lol.

I did not make anyone else get tested or a booster... I think that's a bit much to ask of people. Maybe if the threat becomes bigger I'd have a different opinion.

Nope, but rubella is a standard part of the test panel from what I'm aware (rubella in pregnancy leads to severe birth defects, miscarriage, or stillbirth).

Has anyone else's doctor suggested getting tested for measles immunity? I am in SoCal, which is ground zero for this current outbreak and today (at 28 weeks) my doctor strongly suggested getting a blood test to get checked. If I am not immune, I would get a booster after delivery. My doctor said, they have found many people are not immune even when they think they should be.

I'm totally going to do it for my own sanity, but I wonder if I should insist DH and other family do as well. But then I wonder, what is the likelihood of an adult actually being exposed to measles, even in OC there have only been 35 confirmed cases (and I believe none in the states our parents are in).
