@mrs. bird: I see I see. Well I'm glad to hear you are trying the natural approach, I really hope they work (for both of us!). Diet is really shown to help, and I have heard a lot of success with AP/TCM herbs. I, too, am doing acupuncture and trying to eat healthier. Hopefully they work for both of us and we won't have to go the clomid/femara route. I plan to meet with an OB/GYN in the fall if we have no BFP in 2-3 more cycles. Thanks so much for responding!
On a side note, my husband did the at home sperm test and passed. I know it doesn't test for motility or morphology, but it did put my mind at ease that the "problem" was with me instead of him. Something to consider =)

@dharmainitiative: we haven't proceeded with any treatments yet, other than provera just to induce AF but that's not a fertility treatment. i've been trying to use this time to do some more research and i think right now what we've decided is that we will continue on our own, using non pharmaceuticals-herbs, acupuncture, diet, for the summer, and then revisit with the dr if nothing has happened by the fall. DH will have the SA done then before i take any meds. right now i'm leaning towards femara rather than clomid if we do go that route.

@Ms.SK: Question for you. By cycle 1&4, you mean on Clomid, right? So you try clomid one cycle, then you chances are good, but the second and third cycle you're on Clomid aren't as good, but cycle 4 is good? Or do you mean just general TTC cycle 1&4 are the best? (the reason I ask is because I'm on cycle 4 since the MC, wondering if I am at the end of my lucky month haha...I'm being silly, I know...)

@Ms.SK: Wow - I did not know that about cycle 1&4 being the best! Did your RE allude to why that would be? Is that with increasing clomid dose or keeping it the same?

OP - we did get DH's SA done before starting clomid. I knew it was me with the problem but it is better to know if he has a problem as well. Because if he does they will skip the clomid with BDing and move right on to Clomid with IUI etc.

@mrs.bird I know it isn't fun for the guys I wish it were easier. But it will also make him less shy if you have to move to IUI. Again, good luck!

I haven't started clomid yet, but that is probably what is going to happen next month (if I don't get pregnant this cycle, which I doubt I will). I have PCOS, but my doctor had my DH tested before he even referred us to an RE. He wanted to make sure that the issue was just the PCOS and that DH didn't have anything going on as well. Honestly, I would wanted my DH tested before starting clomid, just to make sure something else wasn't going on.

We live close to the hospital, so DH was able to get the sample at home and drive it over to the hospital within 30 minutes. It all worked out!

I definitely was not o-ing, so I jumped right into the Clomid, but my OB/GYN ordered a SA for the hubs also, just to cover all of our bases. Hubs was a little irritated with me when he found out he had to do the deed, but it was mostly because he had to leave work early to do so. He had to tend to his business at the clinic - they put him in a bathroom by the lab, which he said was awkward because he could hear people walking by. Anyway, it's a good thing he did it because it turns out he needs further consultation. It's definitely worth it to make sure things are good on his part so you don't end up waiting even longer for your BFP :). Good luck!

We were told the best chances for conceiving on chlomid were cycle 1 & 4...wouldn't you want to know everything you could before that first cycle. We saw a RE and not a regular doctor at one of the highest rated clinics on the east coast. DH had a lot of testing plus needed to see a urologist for some white blood cells that could have gotten in our way. We conceived with chlomid and a trigger shot on cycle one with twins. So, based on my experience and what I was told I would say to have your husband tested so you don't "waste" that first cycle. Chlomid is the cheapest form of help you can get make it work for you. Good luck!!!!

The male testing is so inexpensive and although awkward, non-invasive. I don't think it makes a huge difference in whether you do Clomid or not because nothing would "change" exactly, but I think it's good to know. Many couples have both male and female factors in their infertility.

@mrs. bird: We did end up finding out that we have male factor infertility and it is really quite common for men. My DH has had to give three samples at this point - the first one he did at home and dropped it off, the second two (one for our IVF!!) he did at the clinic. I thought it would be tough for him, but he said it was no big deal. Best wishes to you as you move forward!

DH did his SA the same month I started Clomid. He produced his sample in a private room they have at the lab. He said he didn't mind doing it. I think I was more concerned that he would be upset about doing it.

I think it would be best to test him first, especially if you're hesitant about starting Clomid. It was relatively simple - we picked up the kit at the fertility clinic, and dropped the sample off at the hospital (the pick up point). Because it needed to be delivered/tested within 30 minutes, we couldn't do it at home. Poor DH got busy in a public bathroom stall.

i'm still tying to avoid clomid, but i've had the conversation with my dr and she said before starting on clomid, she would want to do a SE on DH. i think it's pretty obvious that i have an issue (last cycle was over 90 days, never o'ed), and while it's possible DH has a problem, we don't have any reason to think that. other people i know have just started clomid, if they're not o'ing, without their SO being tested.

if you've taken clomid, did your SO have any testing done first or was it just confirmed that you weren't o'ing? how did your SO feel about it? if you don't mind sharing- did he make his sample at home and bring it in or did he do it in the office?
