I think I remember someone telling me that if you put a piece of tape down first then screwing into the particle board it should help prevent splitting.

As for the ikea kits, I believe if you go to customer service they have a whole wall of IKEA parts. You just find the bin with those kits. (Well, this is how my IKEA is set up.)

We just moved with old Ikea bookshelves, and knowing there's a baby on the way I ordered a bunch of these http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ANJLSTA?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00.

We screwed them in to the top shelf and it didn't split. There's one tiny bump where DH got close to the edge, but he was mostly just super careful to stay withing the width of the shelf.

The post on the Ikea recall for furniture tipping has me ready to buy straps to secure our furniture.

We have a bookshelf in her room and I am worried that putting a screw into the wood is going to split it and the back isn't very thick. Is there some type of option that would let me somehow adhere the strap to the back? It isn't particle board but what would you do if it was?

Can you order more of the Ikea kits for expedited shelves? Our new kallax shelves came with them but the old ones either didn't or we threw them out.
