I started reading to my daughter before every nap around 4-5 weeks old. I found it really helps settle her down and it's so cute when she coos and talks while I read to her. I read through all the books we have so quickly that we enjoy trips to the library 1-3 times a week!

I keep books around in the playspaces, not just on a bookshelf. There are some in baskets, some on tables, etc. A game we play is "find the frog." I have one of those suctiony stick on frogs for the bathtub, and we use it to stick inside the larger board books...where is the frog? Oh he's in the boat, etc.

Oh wait, I guess if you're talking about when I first started reading to my son, it would probably be when he was able to sit up. So around 6 months or so? Again, can't exactly remember when. :) But now (at 2.5 yo) we read sitting side by side and he'll tell me what's on each page.

My son LOVES to read books. He asks for it when he's bored. Really surprised me but I'm glad. I don't remember exactly when we started reading books together but it's been part of our nap and night time routine for a long time now. Maybe sometime shortly after he turned one? I remember back then I would read and he would grab the book. Now he helps me turn each page.

I have always read to my dauhgter. Now she usually will "read" them herself durring the day and I will read to her at bed time. I read her a book every single night and I am certain it has helped her with her speach development, She talks way more than most kids her age that I know. Plus, she actually memorizes what the books say and can go through page by page and tell me the basica story line of many of her books :)

I'm a teacher too, just not teaching this year.

I taught two years on a native reserve in northern Canada, and last year in a private school for Muslim immigrants. Despite the first language barrier between the two environments, it was VERY obvious that the parents at the private school were more likely to read with their children. My first grade students there were reading MANY levels above the third grade students I taught on the reserve.

@Killer b: I started at about 2 1/2 months (now she's 4 months). I read to her until she gets bored, sometimes it's very short, but sometimes she can last a while. I also try having her sit in different positions, sometimes I'll have her sitting in my lap on the glider, sometimes I'll put her in the bouncer.

My mother read to me every single night when I was a kid. I went in to Kindergarten knowing how to read and have always scored WAY above average on standardized testing and the ACTs in english and reading comprehension. Same for both my brothers.

Reading is definitely something I plan to do and I plan to start very early.

I think it was 6 months before I really started reading longer stories to her. Before that it was mostly board books with a few words on it. I've taken her to the library many times just to get her used to it. She is always one of the youngest there so I don't think a lot of parents start library trips at a young age but I think they should do that in addition to reading at home. I took her to story time last week and she had a very good attention span for it. I think organized reading activities are beneficial for kids, too.

We started from the 1st week. She really liked it, especially learning how to turn the pages. It's a little harder now that she's 9 months and won't sit still for long but then again, she sits really still, pointing with her dad. It's just me. Maybe it's my voice.

I found putting baby in the swing and reading face-to-face when very young, worked for us.

I think before 6 months it's more about teaching them how to sit and look at a book. The last thing you want is tryig to get a wild toddler to sit and look at something for the first time.

I have also read that it is important to read not only at bedtime.

I read to my LO occasionally from 2-6 months but she didn't really participate until after 6 months old when she started to turn the board book pages when I asked her to. Just this week, she started to hand me books to read to her (vs. me suggesting that we read). We have about 10 books that are currently in rotation and we read all of them at least twice a day.....although reading might be an exaggeration since she likes to flip through the pages pretty quickly and each book has 10 pages max.

I plan on reading to our baby from day 1 - ok, maybe not the day he/she is born, but pretty soon after we arrive home. I know my parents read to us every single day from the time we were infants and we all breezed through school with exceptionally high reading comprehension skills.

I don't think it matters so much what is being read as it is the fact that the baby is being read to. My dad apparently read articles from National Geographic to my sister from the time she was 2 days old, and my mom apparently read newspaper articles to us as infants. Obviously they interspersed a lot of children's books as well but I think the diversity was probably good for our language development.

Suffice to say, I can't wait to start reading to our LO when he/she arrives!

@eeh: Great point! Some of the books that worked best at a younger age were pop out books. Also, this Tails book combines textures and pullable tabs and was an early favorite!

@Killer b: They say you can start at six months... but Bee started at 4 months. Charlie really learned to love it from a very young age!

I wouldn't really worry about whether or not they understand what you're saying. I think what Charlie has loved the most is sitting on my lap as he hears my voice. Over time, he's learned to identify different pictures in the books and that provides lots of amusement. But in the beginning, I think mostly he just liked the attention.

@Killer B: I think it's important to start as early as possible. If nothing else it creates a routine and gets them familiar to your voice and can be a special bonding time. One day it will click and they will start to get it. For really little ones, books with texture and mirrors and sounds can be great. It gives them a sensory experience even if they aren't comprehending that you're reading them something.

Do you know what age it should start? Obviously once they can speak and understand, but what about infancy? My LO is 3 months, and I just feel weird reading her books. She can't even focus on the pictures, and likes it more when I look at her to engage. What age did your kiddos start appreciate story time?

As a teacher I can say this is absolutely so true. It is easy to tell the difference between a child who is read to regularly at home vs one who is just experiencing books for the first time. It is possible to catch up and bridge that gap but it takes a lot of hard work on everyone's part that could easily be avoided with 5 minutes a day of reading.

I'm an English teacher and every year I have my high school students write a "Literacy Autobiography." It is amazing how much more well-equipped the students are who read as children. The biggest deal is vocabulary...reading is the best way to expand it. I can still remember all of my favorite kid books. And don't forget the library...there's no need to always buy new books.

According to a recent study, reading a book with your child every day makes a huge difference:

"[A] study revealed that “students whose parents reported that they had read a book with their child ‘every day or almost every day’ or ‘once or twice a week’ during the first year of primary school have markedly higher scores in PISA 2009 than students whose parents reported that they had read a book with their child ‘never or almost never’ or only ‘once or twice a month.’ On average, the score difference is 25 points, the equivalent of well over half a school year.”

The study also said that it really helps to talk with your kids about what they've done during the day, and to tell your kids stories. They said that just "playing" with your kids isn't as effective, at least when it comes to reading comprehension skills.

Really interesting stuff!

Do your kids like to read books? How old was your LO when you started reading books together?
