@hitchhiker: Oh, 100% agreed that the hopes and dreams format isn’t the best. I’m guessing they still want to know the major concerns, but it isn’t being asked directly which isn’t helpful!

@LemonJack: I am very happy to fill out that kind of form! But 5 hopes/dreams is way harder and wouldn’t necessarily prompt me to give that kind of info.

I know they’re a drag, but as a teacher, beginning of the year forms are super helpful in helping me get to know the kids. I don’t use the “five things” format and instead ask a few basic questions including if there’s anything you think I should know about your child. I actually keep those forms all year, and at times I go back and reference them.

Things that are really helpful for me are knowing if there have been any major changes in home/personal life (death, divorce, moving, etc), if your child has any particular struggles you would like me to watch out for (academic and/or social), if they’re particularly worried or anxious about the school year, etc. I’m in middle school so it’s a little different, but it’s been so helpful when any concerns are communicated early, because then I can proactively work to help. Even seemingly minor things like having a parent tell me their student is nervous because all of their friends are in another house (grouping of teachers/students) is so helpful because I will make sure to assign them a seat near other kids in similar circumstances.

If there’s nothing much to note, don’t worry about putting a ton of time or thought into it, but when there is something that you or your child is nervous about, the forms are helpful.

I came up with a few more fears/hopes before I gave the form back to DS. For context he's a 2nd grader in a 2/3 combo.

I fear that we'll lose the last bit of his little kid wonder/enthusiasm.

Fear that he'll get lost in the shuffle of the combo class and find trouble staying on task during the extra Chromebook time.

I hope he keeps his love of learning.

Since we were giving these forms back to our kids to hand in I felt like I couldn't put my biggest fear in case he read it. I'm afraid he will outpace his 4th grade sister academically and she'll shut down completely. Then again, that's not his teacher's concern.

...and of course my real hope is that there are no more forms.

I agree that you should just put what you can think of and not worry about it, I'm sure the teachers don't care much more than you do.

I found the hopes pretty easy, here's what I came up with for my 8 year old: that he's interested and engaged in the school year, that he makes friends, that he gets more interested in reading in French, that he further develops his love of reading, and that we're able to get through a school year without any closures.

And for my 6 year old: that he gets better at dealing with setbacks, that he finds something he really loves about school, that he's kinder to himself, that he makes friends, and that we get through the year with no closures.

But fears are harder - although in another sense they're kind of hopes just flipped. I fear that my six year old will keep being so hard on himself, that he'll never stop sucking his thumb, that what seems to me to be more anxiety than is really normal for a six year old will continue or increase, and that his mood swings will push his friends away. For my eight year old I fear that he'll continue to be so black and white and that will cause him problems, and that his argumentative nature will cause problems with his teachers and friends.

I think it's just a way for the teacher to better get to know your kids.

I think what you wrote is honest and fine. You shouldn’t worry about writing more. If it were me, I would return it as you have it and not give it another thought. I hate stuff like this—it feels like the teacher is signing me homework of questionable value. (But very open to the wise teachers on this board telling me that it’s very useful to them and I’ll change my tune!)

Hmm... are these supposed to be school specific or just in general?

I'd say for hopes that are school centered: 1. that she continues to love learning about new things. 2. that she is able to find friendships that bring out the best of all involved/that they encourage each other to be their best. 3. that even if she is not friends with someone she recognizes the importance of inclusion and being kind (obviously within reason if someone is being unkind to her). 4. that she feels a connection with at least one adult each school year - teacher, ed tech, counselor. 5. that she always tries her best - I care far more about her effort and tracking her own improvement than if she is meeting/exceeding standards.

For fears at school: 1. I fear that she won't feel safe at school based on everything happening in our country. 2. I fear that she loses her own personality to please "friends." 3. I fear that she won't speak up if something makes her uncomfortable. 4. I fear that she won't feel like she belongs in her school/our town (we live in a very wealthy town and we are, most definitely, not wealthy or anywhere near it). 5. I fear that her perfectionism will interfere with her ability to be present.

@Corduroy: the forms make me tired too 😴. It's so exhausting and I only have one child in school!

1. That DDs teacher is just as great as the one she had for K. I was blown away by how thoughtful and kind her teacher was. Always, always exceeding expectations.

2. That the kids all get along and there is no mean girl issues. I have heard some horror stories from a mom with a girl a grade older 🙁

3. That we don't miss many days due to illness!

4. Fear- school shootings😭 we live in a very safe area....but it's sickening to see that it can happen anywhere.

Just when I thought I had completed ALL THE FORMS we got the first day of school forms from the classroom teachers. I like them in theory but I'm tired of forms and I'm always stumped by "The 5 things I wish/hope/dream for my child" and "the 5 things I fear for my child."

So far I have essentially the following:

Hope: A 'regular' in-person school year & meeting or exceeding academic standards.

Fear: Eating tree nuts (allergen doc on file)

I feel like a crappy parent for not having ten inspiring things to write down. What would you put for your grade schooler?
