I hope tonight goes better! No advice here since it's taken me over 2 hours to get M down on several occasions :-/ Oh and teething sucks.

@LovelyPlum: Does she have a mirror in the back seat? I think there's a mirror that plays loud annoying music and lights up. I've been considering it myself because J is slumping over badly in the convertible seat!

@Smurfette: @erind425: thanks. I'm becoming convinced that it is the car nap, too.

Thank you all so much for your thoughts. I went to the store today and got a musical toy, baby mum mums, and a new sleep sack for tonight. We are on our way home now, and she is still awake. Fingers crossed that it means good things for tonight!

I'm sorry! This sounds terrible and the car nap especially sounds like a pain. Do you have any annoying toys with lights/sounds that might keep her awake (something like Baby Einstein take-along tunes)?

You say that you don't want to do CIO, but it sounds like she is crying/upset anyway during your attempts to try to get her to sleep and comfort her. Have you tried starting the night with her in her crib and giving her a chance to fall asleep/wind down on her own? It probably won't work if you do it as a last resort, when she is already wound up, but it might be worth a shot if nothing else is working. It may involve some crying, but if she is crying anyway despite attempts to soothe her, IMO it can't hurt to give it a try!

Motrin is better for teething.

I would bet money it is the late car nap. Sing to her, clap your hands, hand her new toys( when you are stopped), etc. We ended up switching day care cause the nap on the drive home was killing me and her.

@raintreebee: she falls asleep before I pick him up. I get her at 5:15 and we get him at 6. It usually takes us that long to get from daycare to his work because of traffic. Once he's in the car, she'll wake up and interact with him. And thanks for the reminder about sitting in the back. That's a good thing to have in our arsenal.

@Mamasig: yeah, that nap is killer. I just don't know how to keep her from going to sleep, and we don't have an option to not be in the car. Maybe a toy or something that makes noise?

@shortcake: I thought about this. Yesterday, she was sleeping at daycare when I went to go get her, though, so she just kept sleeping in the car.

@gilmoregirl: yeppers, we're party animals in the MOTN, too. Kid just hates sleep. Good thought about the puffs. I definitely need something to distract her. My other concern about not sleeping in the car is that if she doesn't sleep, she will often scream. So, yeah...

Agree with others re: the motrin.

Could one of you sit with her in the back to keep her awake or does she fall asleep before you pick up your husband?

@Mae: thanks-I think I will try that tonight. I also bought soothing bubble bath. We skipped a bath last night because it was getting late, but I think she might need it to calm down.

@nana87: thanks lady  We've been here since way before Christmas, and it has been so ridiculous. I thought we were on our way out when she learned to get down from standing by herself, but it's as if she now has a need to go, go, go constantly. I'm just trying to take a deep breath and be patient. I hope R's sleep is only on the up and up!

We have these nights on occasion. I don't know what it is, but sometimes he just will not go to sleep. He'll be tired as all get out, but he's up till 9 or 10. I think it usually happens when he is super excited about something he's learned, and he will do all of the same things you mentioned G doing. By the end he'll be bawling cause he's tired and I finally get him to pass out. It usually passes quickly, but it is ROUGH. He will also have 2-hour parties in the MOTN.

I've also had better luck with Motrin for teeth. Ben's getting four top teeth right now which is pretty lol.

And that car nap sounds like a killer. I don't have a car sleeper but sorta wish I did because of our current daycare nap situation. I have been known to give him a snack cup of puffs to keep him busy back there. He'll focus on that longer than a toy.

Honestly, I think it's the late nap in the car (besides the teething) that is throwing her off. DS2 is 8 months and a similar situation happened to us last night. He took a late nap from 5-6 and then he fought bedtime until about 9:30. Late naps used to not matter but I think they are starting to.

I'm sorry :( I'm not there yet so I don't know. My only suggestion-- have you tried motrin instead of tylenol? It is supposed to work a lot better.

@Foodnerd81: thanks :) My rational mind knows that it will end soon, but my tired self isn't interested in another yell-a-thon. And that's a good point about the Motrin. Maybe I'll pick some up on my way home. Can't hurt, right?

Can you ask daycare about letting her nap for a short time before you pick her up? That way she won't be tired in the car maybe.

I'm so sorry. That sucks. The only thing I can say is that the really awful phases usually don't last too long for us. As for the teething have you tried advil (ibuprofen)? I think that helps a little more than tylenol and lasts longer. You can even rotate it with the tylenol.

Well, I guess it's my turn...mamas, give me some hope!

LO is 9 months old, and she has always been a bad sleeper. For the most part, we have tried not to angst too much about it. It's been pretty cyclical, with bad and good periods coming and going around milestones, growth spurts, and illnesses. We have a one bedroom, so LO has always been close by us, and about half of the time, she's in our bed. She's not night-weaned herself yet. This arrangement has more or less worked for us to this point, but I fear we may have hit an impasse.

Last night, it took us TWO AND A HALF HOURS to get her to sleep. Both my DH and I were at our wits' end. We don't want to do CIO, and it's also probably impractical in our space. We have to do something, though. I've tried letting her play for a bit longer, to see if she'll get sleepy. That didn't work at all last night. I tried rocking with her, singing to her, DH read her a story. She shrieked and arched her back so hard that I was afraid I was going to drop her. We walked around and around the apartment to no end. We put her on the bed, in the crib, even let her by herself for a bit. Each time, she rolled over and popped back up immediately, climbing on whatever she could find. I let her nurse; she pulled off. I gave her a paci; she took it out and threw it across the room. Nothing was working. I ended up holding her in the dark last night while she flipped out. I tried to remain very calm and just let her get it all out of her system. I don't even know how long it took, but this finally got her to go to sleep.

I don't even really know what I'm looking for here...commiseration? hope? A suggestion of something I'm too tired to figure out to try? I really don't want to do this again tonight.

A few complicating factors:
*she has no teeth yet, but we can see some coming in. I know her mouth hurts. We have a rotation of Tylenol, teething tabs, and Orajel that we use, but it doesn't always work.

*DH started a new job last week (yay!!) but it throws a wrench into our evening schedule. I now pick LO up from daycare at 5:15, but instead of going straight home, we have to pick up DH from work first. This means that we don't get home until close to 6:30, and she now is in the car for an hour at the end of the day. Given that it's pitch black by then, she's been falling asleep in the car. I know that's throwing everything out of whack, but I'm not really sure what to do about it. I have tried to bring books and or toys to entertain her, but more often than not, she falls asleep anyways.

*Not getting home until 6:30 also means we have to adjust our dinner/bath/bedtime schedule. For a while, she was going to sleep between 7:30 and 8:00, but now, she's not tired then. I'm not wedded to a particular time, but I don't think it's a good idea for her to be up much past 9. Heck, *I* don't want to be up much past 9!

Sorry for the novel. I know in my heart of hearts that this is just a phase, and it will get better. On the other hand, a girl can only stand to watch her baby sob for so long. If you've made it this far, thanks.
