@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: @Becky: this is so interesting because in both NYC (where LO was born) and Boston (where a good friend had his daughter) you had to show the nurses the kid properly secured in a car seat to leave—- and neither I nor my friends owned a car at the time! (Common for those big cities) Luckily we had a car seat anyway, but my friend had to send someone to buy a car seat after their daughter was born to be discharged!

@Pancakes: ha. I remember that too, but not the car seats. I thought the hat was probably because they were using a few different babies on set and the hat helped disguise the different kids.

@Becky: Exactly this. I can't tell you how many people I know don't use car seats properly (or car seats at all). In DS's day care alone, I see a dad drop off his daughter who is in DS1's class (so she's 5) with her sitting in the front seat. Her mom and dad aren't together, and her mom has tried to get him to get her a car seat, and he still shows up with her sitting in the front seat when she's with her dad.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I think they have to ask or check if you have one and for my most recent lol they gave out an info sheet but from when I volunteered in maternity and my first or second birth can't remember they aren't allowed to actually put the baby in or supervise that. I guess liabilities? Idk.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Ours just check that you have a car seat. Also I think a lot of people living near where I work don’t have cars so thus don’t have car seats. If they get a ride to the food pantry or grocery store, they probably just don’t use a car seat or use whatever is around (which might be ancient or the wrong type). Honestly I more often see babies in appropriate car seats (it’s fairly easy to come by one if you need assistance), but once they’re one and need to move up that’s where the problem is.

@Becky: I thought hospitals were checking car seats before discharging LOs. TO be fair though, mine just asked if we had one.

@Jennibenni: It's been years since I've watched Breaking Bad but what used to drive me crazy was that their baby was always wearing a hat! They live in the desert and it's HOT there, and this was way past when the baby was an itty bitty newborn. Why is she wearing a hat all the time?? :silly:

@Becky: I don’t know, the characters are both smart people with jobs that require quite a bit of formal education. I can buy that the car seat is old to reflect their financial status but they should have enough sense to buckle it. I think that aspect is more an oversight or lack of concern by the show runners than it is a commentary on the characters.

Pretty sure it’s on purpose, and it’s also realistic for today. When I first started working at my current job I was shocked by he numberof children in no or wrong car seats going to the food pantry and service center next door. Within 20 minutes one time I saw a 2 or 3 year old climb into an unrestrained old school 3-point harness infant seat that was just propped on the regular seat in the van (they put the seat belt over the entire thing), and then a 2 or under just bopping around in the backseat of a car (I could see that there wasn’t a car seat in there). I ended up going inside and asking the volunteers to connect the families with a nearby place that gives out car seats. When I saw the same thing with different families the next week I felt like there wasn’t anything more I could do because it was just so many families.

I binged B.B. before having LO and didn’t notice. Apparently, the Internet has taken issue all this time. :silly: @petitenoisette: I think you are right. They were under stress financially when the baby was born.

Can I just say the 5 point harness must have been revolutionary when it came out!

Hahaha I remember noticing that too. I think it was supposed to also be emblematic of them not having much money (like it was the car seat that used with Flynn :silly: ). But I get totally aggravated too when I see car seat safety no-no’s in movies or tv. Like babies never seem to be rear-facing.

LOLOLOLOL! Yesssss!!! I binge watched breaking bad a few years ago after DS was born and it drove me nuts too. The person in charge of props obviously doesn't have young kids.

My husband and I started watching Breaking Bad recently for the first time, and omg I cannot even pay attention to the show when the baby is on because she LIVES in the carseat apparently and it's this 1985 looking thing with no chest clip and she's never strapped in. I think the show is set in the early 2000s so I don't get it? Has anyone else noticed this? My husband is not bothered so I figured someone here might share my irritation haha.
