I haven't read them recently so I don't know, but I plan to get them for my son. I kind of feel like they're a children's classic!

@pinkcupcake: I agree with you!!

I wasn't a huge fan of The series, mainly because I wasn't really into mysteries. Although I did really like the first book that sets everything up.

I enjoyed these as a kid! Another series that has withstood the test of time is the Nancy Drew mysteries! I read so many of those as a kid (including some that belonged to my grandma when she was a little girl!).

I loved this series as a kid and would love to re read them again with / to my daughter. I can see how people could be annoyed at the gender roles, but I think it would be a good opportunity to show your kids how different people thought back then. Books are like a view into the past ... They give us a glimpse of what life was like in that era, and I think that in itself is a great lesson when it comes to reading.

I read them and enjoyed them. But then I was working in a group home and one girl age 8 or 9 asked me to read one with her and I was pretty appalled by the gender roles, so I'm unlikely to read them with my kids.

This was one of my favorite series as a kid! I think I owned the entire collection. I watched the animated version of the first book a few months on Netflix and what Oxana said was right about the dated gender roles but I don't know that reading that affected me in any way cause I ended up in a very male dominated career field and don't cook ever (my husband does though :) )

YES, YES, YES!!!! I think they would be a great option to read aloud to kiddos. :)

I think many of their adventures throughout the books are pretty timeless.

Sarah McKenzie recommended it in this episode of her podcast: http://amongstlovelythings.com/24/

If you're interested in the idea of reading aloud, all of the Read Aloud Revival episodes are worth listening to (they're available on the site I linked and also in iTunes). She interviews some pretty cool people. She's a homeschooler, but it's not specifically geared at homeschooling families.

Personally, I think the series has aged well. The only objection I've heard some people make is that the gender roles are somewhat dated...the boys are portrayed as being into boyish things, while the girls are girly. Just what you'd expect from something of that era.

I didn't read the series as a kid, so I feel like I can't judge it quite fairly, but as an adult, I though it was just okay. Maybe that's because it's a mystery series and I'm not into mysteries, though. I prefer the Poppy series by Avi or Mercy Watson by DiCamillo or the Half Magic series for easy chapter books. But it's quite possible that I would have loved it as a kid.

So many people mentioned this series in a separate post that I had to look it up in Wikipedia!

Originally published in 1924 by Rand McNally (as The Box-Car Children) and reissued in a shorter revised form in 1942 by Albert Whitman & Company,[3] The Boxcar Children tells the story of four orphaned children, Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny. They create a home for themselves in an abandoned boxcar in the forest. They eventually meet their grandfather, who is a wealthy and kind man (although the children had believed him to be cruel). The children decide to live with the grandfather, who moves the beloved boxcar to his backyard so the children can use it as a playhouse.

The books in the series are almost 100 years old, so I was wondering... is this still a good series to read with kids? I've bought some other series that didn't age well, so was just wondering if the Boxcar Children has stood the test of time!
