Alongside raising millions for charity, he abused children who were on his TV shows, he abused children in the hospitals and children's homes he visited (as a good Samaritan) and every day more and more stories come out. </p> <p>We're talking more than 50 years of serial abuse until his death last year... and it seems to me that everyone knew. The nurses at the hospitals, staff at the BBC, his peers.... and yet no-one, no-one said a word. They didn't say a word!!! And the man died without ever being brought to justice. </p> <p>Why did nobody say anything? I lived in State College and worked at Penn State for awhile and I do think there is a certain culture of self protection and sort of a boys club mentality. It wasn't just JoePa that knew, so many people both at the University and in the community, including child welfare services and the guys charity, had been aware of serious allegations against Sandusky and no one did anything. Heck, I think even our governor, Tom Corbett, is partially responsible, he was attorney general at the time and there was plenty of evidence to at least do more intensive investigations. JoePa was a speaker at the RNC back in the day and Sandusky was a big contributor too. It wasn't a question of people not knowing or not alerting the right people. lots had been aware of allegations against him. When you think of institutions like that as being something like a mafia family, you really can't say anything without jeopardizing your career/family/reputation since you ARE complicit in it simply by finding out...And trying to accuse "the don" or his higher-ups of something as nasty as child abuse is something a lot of people will, unfortunately, avoid doing because of the risks it makes to their social circles if for some reason the accusations are false or whatever. It would be horrible to oversee an organization that allowed that sort of behavior... but if you try to hide it, aren't you complicit? Not only is there no justice for past victims, but more children could be victimized.</p> <p>I guess I don't understand why people would try to hide this. If someone told me this happened under my watch, my biggest concern would be that I would march over to the accused person and hang them out a window... which I guess wouldn't be very fair if they were falsely accused.</p> <p>The Boy Scouts, Penn State, BBC.. anyone else amazed that so many respected institutions have had sexual abuse of children happen under their roofs... and then, tried to hide it? </p>
