@cokiezombie: my understadning is that you'd have to eat a lot of Fiber One bars at one time to consume enough chicory root for it to be a problem. But you're right that it's always a good idea to ask your healthcare professional first!

for hot beverage recommendations, i think any hot liquid would work, but maybe hot water with lemon and honey might be ok and less offensive for the m/s? hope the little concoction works. i don't mind all of those ingredients separately...i'm wondering if you can make some sort of baked good with them to make it more tolerable.

@Honeybee: I was advised that Fiber One bars contain hickory root, which is known to induce labor..so it's not good during pregnancy. But then again, as long as everything is in moderation, I think it should be fine :)

Ugh. Often the most successful (non-food) "trick" for me is exercise. I know that doesn't sound like too much fun either, but especially if it's been, ahem, a little too long, getting myself moving usually gets my *inner?* self moving, too. And it doesn't taste gross!

Ugh, that sounds awful I couldn't handle that concoction either! I had a horrible time with constipation up until my 20th week. So bad it lasted for 7 days at a time. I finally called the dr in tears, literally, and they told me to drink a large cup of hot water as soon as I get up in the morning and then eat a fiber one bar a 1/2 hour later. Then drink another cup of hot water 20 minutes before dinner and then milk of magnesia immediately after dinner. I don't know why it works but it did for me! The milk of magnesia did nothing on its own, but drinking the hot water made something happen!

That shit would not work for me. Prune juice does NOTHING for me. I have, ahem, a chronic issue in this department, though. So i know all about being backed up :( The prune juice and fiber alone will make you gassy, which is awful. I find prune juice tastes MUCH better warmed up, by the way. If you choose to drink it solo.

Have you tried Miralax? My doctor prescribed me Miralax and glycerin suppositories (i know, i know). But they WORK. Not as well as the stuff I was on previously. But they work. And are safe :) And don't taste disgusting....

I actually stopped the Zofran since the vomiting was preferable to me over being so stopped up! I am usually super regular so it was awful and painful for me to not be able to go! My doctor recommended stool softness, but I didn't want to take another medication for the side effects of the first medication!

Good luck! I stopped taking a medicine that was backing me up when I got pregnant so it's been fine for me, but I know how frustrating it can be.

A few other suggestions:

Activia yogurt. Watch the SNL sketch after you try it.
Bran muffins (slightly less effective I'm sure but yummier)
Fruit/spinach smoothies - peel freeze a banana, blend it with a cup of berries and a cup of spinach. You can't taste the spinach, I promise! Throw in any other fruit you have around like a peach.

Whenever I have this problem (I am plauged with it quite frequently) I go on an all fruit and veggie diet and drink a TON of water. I only need to do it for about 1/2 a day or at the most a full day and it works every time. If I have to eat carbs I only eat whole grain and not a full serving. It is my saving grace for when I travel, something about being away from home makes my digestive system totally shut down (sorry TMI).

Hope that helps, it might be a good alternative!

The recipe your doc recommended doesn't sound very appealing to me either:( buuuttt I do like all three of those ingredients separately! Could you just eat them non blended? :)
I also prefer whole prunes to prune juice... It helps to remember they are just dried plums! Hehe somehow that makes them yummier for me! :)

That sounds so gross- can't you eat/drink that stuff separately? I think mixed together it would be nasty.

I just drank a cup of prune juice with my breakfast every morning. I am not a fan of prune juice, but I got used to it after awhile- it definitely helped to drink it with a meal. And it REALLY helped. I didn't need Zofran, but I had major issues just due to pregnancy itself. (I think because I was disgusted with any veggies for most of the pregnancy, and my digestive tract does not function well without veggies!)

I eat 1-2 Fiber One bars a day and haven't had any problems with regularity. My doctor actually told me to take dulcolax which I guess isn't normally recommended to pregnant women. 1 or 2 pills before bed with a mug of something warm can make the next morning much more pleasant.

For some reason yogurt usually works for me. Or just switching to high fiber, but that's hard when you have m/s. Drinking lots of water/fluids and taking Metamucil helps but sometimes it takes awhile. Good luck!

I'm telling you, coffee and Fiber One bars were my saving grace. You might also ask your doctor about stool softeners; that seems to help a lot of people (along with increased fiber).

ETA: Do you not like prunes at all? DD loves the Plum Organics Prune puree in the squeezable pouch. It's just straight prunes, but it'd be easy to use one of those pouches in a smoothie or something, since they're already blended.

I had a doctor's appointment today and was whining about how Zofran stops me up...like majorly. (Sorry for the TMI) So, the nurse practitioner gave me my doctor's recipe to cure this, which he calls Power Pudding. You mix a cup of all-bran cereal, a half cup of applesauce, and a half cup of prune juice. Yum? Mix it together and leave it in the refrigerator. Eat 2-4 TBSPs at bed time with a glass of water. The next morning drink one cup of some kind of hot beverage.

At this point, I'm willing to try anything, but the thought of eating prune juice cereal makes my m/s queasiness revolt at the thought...GROSS.
