Never! I think my grandfather read to me on a regular basis until I was around 10 or so. And my mom sporadically for several more years. And that was in addition to reading a ton on my own. Even now, I like being read to, though I don't have much opportunity. I can't wait until my son is old enough for me to read more complex, chapter books to him.

Never! My mom read to us until we were all middle school age. And when I was in high school and on a couple family vacations after that, my mom and I read novels aloud to each other. If we lived closer, we'd still be doing that! I'll read to my kids as long as they enjoy it.

I don't remember when my parents stopped reading to me, but I know my dad read to my youngest brother at bedtime all through elementary school and maybe even a little of middle school.

Scholastic did a survey on this: http://www.scholastic.com/readingreport/reading-aloud.htm

I think my parents stopped sometime in elementary school. I liked to read on my own in my spare time.

I think we'll keep going for a long time. It's our default entertainment in the evening during dinner clean-up and LO has plenty of other times during the day to read on his own.

I remember I would still want my mom to come in and sit with me while I read to myself after 1st grade or so... I was a super fast reader and she couldn't read aloud faster than I could read alone. I definitely wanted some cuddle time for a couple years after that and would sit in if my mom read something to my younger siblings that I wanted to listen to.

I think my mom stopped reading out loud when I was like 9 and my brother was 12, mostly because she picked a book that we had no interest in so she gave up, haha. But that's pretty old, and we were both very voracious readers on our own by then. I'll read for as long as I can with lo!

i don't remember when my parents stopped reading to me, i actually don't have memories of them reading to me, so i'm guessing i was pretty young when they stopped. i don't think it adversely affected me or my sister--we are both voracious readers (well, i used to be, then i had kids).

I've always loved reading so I never really needed any encouragement to read on my own. I don't remember when it stopped being a daily thing be we often read chapter books as a family around Christmas time we'll into junior high. As long as your child is willing to listen, never stop!

I think reading aloud can benefit people of all ages. I know that when I read more complicated texts aloud, I often need to remind myself to slow down, pronounce the words, etc. It's a good way to practice your speech.

I will read aloud as long as my son wants, and probably there will come a point where he doesn't want to be read to anymore, but I hope that's a long way off.

I remember that my parents used to read as stories for a really long time. Definately until my youngest sibling could read well too, so I was probably 11? Just like @OhCaptain: my parents started reading classic chapter books to us and we would often read the same book for months. It is also one of my favorite memories.

Never!! I teach literacy and have worked with grades K-8 - I read aloud daily, no matter the grade. Even my 13 year olds said it was their favourite part of our day. There are so many benefits to reading aloud to your child as they get older: so they can hear a fluent reader, so they have someone to discuss their book with, so they can build their vocabulary, increase their attention span, read more difficult texts than those they would be able to read alone, etc. Read alouds are the best! 📚

My dad read to me and my brother until middle school! He would read long adult fantasy and science fiction books (which once I re-read them as an adult I realizes, often got edited for appropriateness). We were about your kids age when he read us the hobbit. Later he also read us all three lord of the rings books and Thr Dragon Riders of Pern books by Anne Mcaffrey. I know it was hard for him when we no longer wanted to do "stories" but he did instill in both of us a love of books and reading. My brother and I both read each night before bed through high school, and even most nights in college, and now as adults:

There are many benefits to continuing reading aloud to your children as they get older. I wouldn't stop just because he is getting older. Teachers do it into high school! You can stop to explain difficult topics, help pronounce, define vocabulary and to model language, and build their literacy.

My son is 6 1/2, and he still loves it when we read to him at night. But sometimes he just reads on his own and falls asleep without a bedtime story. Is this the beginning of the end? Feels like a matter of time before he is reading himself to sleep every night. I hope we can keep it up though, because it is such a bonding time with the kids!

When do most people stop reading to their kids?
