So my plan was to feed him if he woke after 5. Well he woke at 4, so we continued our sleep training and he fell back asleep in half an hour (most of which was spent either whining or quietly trying to get into a position to fall asleep). He then slept until 7am. So he's fully capable of going the 11 hours without eating. One day he'll STTN and it will be awesome.

I just feed her, because then she'll sleep till 7. On days when she sleeps past 5, she's up for the day at 6/6:30. I'd rather have the wake up and get to sleep longer.

@gotkimchi: that's just about what we did. First we switched up bedtime as he used to nurse to sleep and now we nurse then read/play for 20 minutes or so before bed. Then we CIO to drop a feed. It was about an hour of crying at night which is really hard but he'd just about dropped that feed in 2 days.

@sailgrl18: Babies will often wake between 4 or 5am because it's the coldest part of the night or the birds start singing! 9-10 hours is still a really good stretch of sleep so if your LO will nurse then go back to sleep, I'd just roll with it :-)

@sailgrl18: did you try to reduce the length or qty of night feeding first or just go for it? I have a 9mo old who wakes at least once per night. I'd love to get rid of this feeding but she doesn't give them up easily! I was worried about the amount of crying because my willpower sucks at 3am. But this gives me hope!

Even on a good night, my 14-month-old still wakes up to nurse between 4:30 and 5. He then goes back to sleep and wakes up around 7:15-7:30.

I get frustrated that he's not "sleeping through the night," but for me its better than getting up at 5. I'm trying to shift my expectation so I don't go crazy.

This too shall pass, right?

My 9.5 month old just started doing this too! Ugh. I work until like 9 at night so going to sleep early enough is tough.

My LO had the 5am wakeup for a long time and I just fed her and let her go back to sleep for a couple hours. She eventually dropped it and started STTN 12 hours. The 5am wakeup was always ok with me because she had had about 10 hours of sleep by then.

@sailgrl18: That sounds almost exactly like how our sleep training went, at the exact same age. Now DS is just shy of 13 months and he's usually up between 530-630 after STTN. Sometimes if it's on the earlier end of that I will try to nurse him and put him back down. But we're usually up for the day. He makes up for it with his naps, but it is painful for me. Sigh. Hoping he'll grow out of it, because it will be hard to go to one nap if he keeps waking up early.

We always started by acting like it was an overnight feeding. First we'd offer the paci, then if that didn't work, we fed them in their room, dim lights, etc. A lot of times we would get lucky, and they would be drowsy enough to go back to sleep. But if they seemed wide awake or were going to put up a huge fight, we'd just be up for the day. UGH! That's a hard phase!

I don't feel so guilty about giving in and nursing him reading I'm not alone with this wakeup. Hopefully he starts growing out of it on his own and not moving the wakeup earlier and earlier into the night.

@sailgrl18: My LO woke up at 5 a.m. for a few weeks, and I just fed him and let him go back to sleep. After 3 weeks or so, he dropped it on his own, and now sleeps until at least 6 a.m. and is up for the day. It happened right around 10 months too! Like some sort of weird regression of sorts. Hope it passes soon for you too!

my LO went from STTN to the dreaded 4-5am wakeup. it is very common for babies to wake up around that time because when a sleep cycle is over and it's thiiis close to getting up for the day, it's hard to transition to the next sleep cycle. i did not know this, and continued to employ CIO for 20 minutes before getting up for the day. this continued for months and was the bane of my existence. then i just started nursing him at the early wakeup and he would go to sleep until a more decent hour. to introduce nursing again after he had initially dropped all MOTN feedings was weird and i felt like we were regressing, but in retrospect i wish i had just done it sooner and we all would have been better off.

We've been sleep training DS the last week after months of teething and illness. He generally had been waking 1-2 per night and out of ease I was nursing him. Since he's almost 10 months and showed no signs of dropping those feeds on his own we started sleep training to drop the night feeds.

Night 1 - DS woke at 12:30am cried for 1.5 hours (we later learned he threw his lovie out of the crib in frustration which probably made the crying last longer) but then slept until 6:45 (no eating all night)
Night 2 - DS woke at 3:30 cried for 1 hour and slept until 7am (no eating all night)
Night 3 - DS cried at 2 for 10 minutes then was back asleep and then woke at 5am crying. I gave him half an hour but since it was so close to his wakeup I fed him and he slept until 7:20
Night 4 - DS slept until 5:15 (NO CRYING ALL NIGHT!!!). When he woke at 5;15 he tried to put himself back to sleep but couldn't stay asleep so after 35 minutes I fed him because he was starting to just play in his crib and I didn't want him to wake for the day. He then slept until 7am.

So what to do with this wakeup. Should I be letting him CIO or just get him to sleep longer. He'd already slept 9.5 hours straight which is a big improvement.
