Hahaha. I didn't get a lunch. My mum was a single mum and I have 3 younger siblings, so making lunches for us was something she gave up pretty early on ;)

If I woke up early enough I could make myself a marmite and cheese sandwich. And pick up an apple and a muesli bar (if there were any in the house!!)

Yes! I still eat that stuff!
I always had a soggy cheese and tomato, marmite or a paste sandwich....Brits, remember paste?
Then a penguin, a kit Kat or a club. If I was lucky I got a viscount. Then monster munch or hula hoops.
Orange squash to drink!

I had a Rainbow Brite lunchbox and thermos. It contained a similar lunch -
Turkey/cheese or ham/cheese - on really special days I'd get a croissant sandwich
Pretzels or a bag of chips
Fruit Snacks
Apple or tangerine
Yogurt

Pretty much the same kind of lunch for me. (American) I just wanted to add that I had a Jem lunchbox, then a NKOTB one! In middle school it was "cool" to bring your lunch in a brown paper lunch bag. Sigh, how boring is that!

My lunch was similar. Sandwich, fruit, crackers or chips and I usually had milk money to get a drink at school. But I saved that change all week to get candy out of the vending machine.

Similar components for me (American) as well, although it was usually a ham&cheese or turkey&cheese sandwich. Peanut butter was rare. We'd get chips or pretzels, and either a cookie, Jello or chocolate pudding. Sometimes she would put in a box of raisins, or mozzarella sticks. I don't think we often got fruit or veggies because we never ate them! Oh, and a Juicy Juice box. YUM.

Mine was similar. Turkey and cheese sandwich. A piece of fruit and a sandwich bag of plain chips. I'd bring a quarter to buy a chocolate milk or take water in my thermos. I'd randomly throw in a whole pickle, which I usually traded for gushers. Me and another kid had a deal going most of elementary school.

Ha ha your British lunchbox wasvery similar to my American one.

PBJ on whole wheat wrapped in a sandwich baggie or wax paper.
Little Debbie's zebra cake snack.
Handful of Utz in a sandwich baggie. (used for trading food)
Broccoli florettes and carrot sticks with aside of Ranch dressing in tupperware.
Sunmaid raisins.
If my dad grocery shopped I had Juicy Juice juice box, if my mom grocery shopped I had Capri Sun!

I remember the thermos, but I usually played with it at home. Filling it up and pouring stuff out for my dolls.

We would line our lunchboxes on the table and play TV with them. I had a CareBear lunch box.

@Cherrybee: Exactly how you described! I had a Care bear lunchbox and flask with weak orange squash. Jam or peanut butter sandwiches, supermarket own brand crisps if you were lucky (although sometimes salt and vinegar chipsticks, still love those), Penguin or Club biscuit oh and always a yoghurt, quite often a French set one, ew.

Over the last few months, I've noticed "bentos" mentioned on this site regularly. I understood that they were packed lunches of some sort and thought that perhaps bento was an American word for packed lunch. Anyway, I noticed that all the bentos people posted pics of were super cute and followed a set kind of formula (like little portions of finger food). I finally googled bentos and discovered that they are, in fact, a traditional style of packed lunch from Japan, Korea and a few other gorgeous places. I had no idea!!

Well that got me to thinking.... a traditional English packed lunch, when I was a little girl, looked like this:

They were usually packed in "lunch boxes" - plastic boxes with handles on, that often came with a matching flask.

They frequently contained:

- A soggy ham or cheese (sometimes jam) sandwich, wrapped in tin foil or cling film.

- A bruised apple or another, similarly boring piece of fruit. You had to remember to throw this away in the playground bins, otherwise you'd be told off by your mum for not eating it.

- A penguin bar - or some other biscuit type bar.

- Weak orange or lemon squash - in the flask! Really posh kids might have had a capri sun! You envied these kids!!

- Very occasionally, you got crisps. Those were the best days!!

Where are you from? What did the traditional lunches of your childhood look like?
