This is about when we went through it with K...we started time out shortly thereafter. She didnt get it at first but it did click after a month or so.

We also started out with the "nice touches" and "nice hands" to correct the behavior.

We noticed a large improvement when her words/ability to communicate improved.

Now she is almost 2.5 and we have moved to correcting it by explaining how it makes us feel when she hits - since she is starting to understand feelings more.

DS is 19 mos and is starting to hit - mostly out of frustration when he doesn't get his way. He's just starting to form words and phrases but I do think part of his hitting is his way of communicating that he doesn't like things or that he's upset. How do you curb this behavior from making it a habit? He doesn't have the concept of time yet but when he is angry and starts to hit we tell him firmly, "No" and if he does it again we put him in a chair until he calms down which can take a few seconds or a few minutes. Sort of like a time out. Any advice out there?
