This makes me proud to live in Oregon, where assisted suicide is legal.

thank you for sharing this. with several grandparents who had alzheimer's or dementia, and slow, dragging declines, this is something i've thought about.

@Anagram: What a touching story. I respect her decision to end her life and am glad she was able to carry out her last wishes peacefully, surrounded by the people whom she loved.

I am not 100% sure of my stance on assisted suicide, but I do know Alzheimer's is such a devastating disease for which there is no cure, no hope.

I watched my grandmother die a slow death from early onset Alzheimer's, and it was just awful. I applaud Sandy's ability to be honest about, and document her feelings during the process of her decline. I feel that probably helped those around her cope. In my grandmother's case, no one ever talked openly about her decline - it was a very taboo topic. I think talking openly would have helped everyone cope. I think Sandy has done a service to those touched by Alzheimer's by documenting her story and ultimately choosing to die under her terms despite what the disease had already taken from her.

This story really touched me--I know it's random for a parenting website, but it's such an important topic.
