@yoursilverlining: Sigh. I shall henceforth not bother to reply to threads you've already replied to since you always say what I'm thinking in a much more eloquent way.

I think this is a little closed minded and don't agree at all, necessarily.

I think it’s probably true-ish; but not in the way we traditionally mean “role model”.

In general, you do see children replicate their parents’/guardians’ behaviors and choices which is why you see generational cycles of abuse and domestic violence, of teen pregnancy, of education and economic levels – all sorts of things. So, I think it’s probably true in the sense that the roles you model for your child are the one they are more generally likely to replicate; and I do think that the same gender parent (if one is present) probably does have more influence.

So yeah; I agree in the sense of "role model" being that the same gendered parent's behavior is more likely to be modeled by a child; not in the sense that "so and so is my role model because of x, y, z".

I'm not sure I'm sold on this. I really look up to my dad, so in my case it would not be true. Of course I look up to my mom too.

It isn't true for me. My dad is my role model. I didn't live with my mom growing up, so that could be why. My stepmom has been around since I was 2, so I did grow up with a mom in the home.

I think it's probably true, though I think it probably depends on your definition of role model. I think we just naturally tend to become more like our same-sex parent, regardless of what we want. As teenagers and adults (and maybe even younger), we may realize that we don't want to be like them, and then put in effort to be different, but I think that's a conscious choice we have to make, whereas we might naturally just follow in their footsteps otherwise.

I know I'm definitely a lot like my mother, and seem to become more and more like her every day. My SIL is very much like her mother, even though she wishes she wasn't. The girlfriends I have who I am familiar with their parents, I can see that they resemble their mothers, even the one that strives not to!

@.twist.: Hah! Agreed. Oprah's experts mostly make me eye-roll.

But in response to the question... my mom is not my role model, in fact I strive to do almost everything completely different from her, because I do not want to end up like her. My dad is who I look up to and model my work habits, ethics, and personality after.

I think so. Dh and his bro go to their dad for advice and he's definitely their role model. My mom is my role model and I'm becoming more and more like her as I get older.
My sister kept telling me that Im becoming my mom ..

I respect and look up to my dad and compared all the guys I dated to him. The only guy who came close to my awesome dad was dh! ;)

@mrs. wagon: I agree! I think the term is off!

I am just like my mom but not necessarily because I strive to be like her but more just because due to being around her so much I follow in her footsteps

@.twist.: lol. I admit I zone out once I hear "Dr. Phil said ....".

I think we learn from both our parents, but they don't have to be our role models. What if we don't like what they are doing? Your role model can be anybody you wish to model yourself after.

Honestly, I mostly think Dr. Phil is full of shit these days.

I think a great role model can be anyone who made/makes a huge positive impact in your life. I also think children need good male and female role models but not necessarily a parent (because obviously that doesn't work for same sex marriages).

I agree, my mom is/was totally my role model growing. Not in every aspect of life, but she set the tone for the type of person I wanted to be. I think it can vary, but in my case it's true!

@MrsWagon: Agree. I don't strive to be like my mother (I grew up wanting to be like my father), but I know there are some behaviors I have that are modeled after hers just from consistent exposure. You can't always fight your environment.

@Thehistoryofus: I was thinking the same thing (the term "role model"). At first I immediately thought my dad was more my role model, but in truth I'm very quickly becoming my mom in a lot of aspects of my personality and outlook on life. I think a role model is a person you strive to become like, and in my case I don't necessarily strive to be like my mother, but I think I'm quite modeled after her from watching and knowing her for more years than anyone else in my life.

I wonder about the term role model. I would say yes, my mom is the person that I most closely an modeled after. Part of that is nature and genetics but a lot is because she was a role model.

Read this quote in Oprah Magazine... it's from Dr. Phil.

Been wondering if it's true? It obviously fails for some same-sex parents, like one of Charlie's good friends (a boy) who has two moms. And it doesn't apply if you've lost a parent (if they share a gender with you).

Putting those situations aside, I still wonder if this holds water. Is Mrs. Bee Olive's most powerful role model? Am I Charlie's most powerful role model? Maybe for certain things, but I am having trouble buying what Dr. Phil is selling.

What do you think: is the most powerful role model in any child's life the same-sex parent? Was that true for you?
