I know a couple that adopted 8 children of a different race. The parents also have two biological children. One of the adopted children resents the parents because they aren't the same race. It is really heartbreaking for everyone involved.

And you're right, why don't they just survey the people who have these situations? That would make the most sense

Personally, I could see how maybe at some point in an adopted child's life they wished they had a family resemblance with their parents/siblings. But I don't see it being some huge issue. As far as culture goes, I think it's important to teach children about all different cultures. It's also good to know where you come from, ie an African baby being adopted in America or a Chinese baby being adopted in Canada...I can see how teaching that child extensively about their biological family's culture could be important (& exciting!) for them. But white parents adopting an African-American baby don't have different cultures in my opinion. That's like saying parents from New York that adopting a baby from Texas need to say y'all, drink sweet tea & listen to country music. It's absurd.

They had a bunch of people debate the subject:
http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2014/02/02/in-adoption-does-race-matter

My sister is adopted and from a different country than me... it wasn't an issue for us growing up. It did come up over time, but we both worked through it.

It is pretty amazing to me how experts who have never experienced adoption (as a parent, a sibling or a child) feel so confident weighing in on it. In any case, haven't there been enough trans-racial adoptions that we can just ask the adoptees and the parents how things worked out and see how things are going?
