I thought The Nightingale was excellent. It stayed with me, and I would definitely recommend it. What I wouldn't recommend is the audio version. I started with it and borrowed a friend's kindle to switch to the text because I just couldn't stand the terrible faux French accent and slow pace of the audio book.

@PawPrints: I read it right after All the Light as well. I wouldn't recommend that if you're looking to mix it up. Both are about the Nazi occupation of Vichy France.

@PinkElephant: if I remember correctly it does start put a bit slow. But by the end I really liked it! Possibly more than the nightingale.

I liked it, but thought it was particularly dark for Kristin Hannah books.

@MrsSCB: Does All the Light We Cannot See get better? I was intrigued by reviews and started it, but couldn't get into it in time, so back to the library it went!

@PawPrints: If you're looking for a break from Nazis and the Holocaust this is not the book for you! (Although you should read it, it's so good. And I also really enjoyed All the Light We Cannot See.)

@erinbaderin: Haaahaha please tell me you are kidding me. I just downloaded it after getting it on my library waiting list and haven't started it yet - I had just finished All The Light We Cannot See and complained the whole time to DH that every single freaking novel has to be about WWII/Nazis/Holocaust now. There are other interesting topics!!

[ETA] Okay though admittedly I did end up really enjoying All The Light We Cannot See...

It's wonderful! I love all Kristin Hannah books but agree with pp that it is very sad (as all her books are).

I just finished it, and loved it - so engrossing. Beware, though, that it is SAD! Which I should have expected, given that it's about France during the Nazi occupation, but it made me sob.

I put off reading it for a long time because I also recently read The Goldfinch, which I hated, and it put me off The [bird name] books, but they're nothing alike.
