I'm an only child, which ROCKED when I was younger, but sucks now. I see all of my friends and how their relationships/bonds are with their siblings and it makes me really bummed sometimes.

Plus, I think that being an only child makes me more of a brat when it comes to certain things. I do remember one time changing the clocks at my house when a friend was over, so she stayed later than the time she was supposed to go home. That's really pathetic now that I think of it.

I had an older sister and we were never close though we were only 22 months apart. We still aren't that close but I also appreciate having her. My husband was an only child and he never felt like he missed out on anything. We don't plan to have any more children so our son will be an only child and we are comfortable with that.

We haven't fully decided, but we might end up having only one child. What I worry about is the future, if my husband dies and I am alone. I don't want my son to feel like he has to invite me to every holiday at his house, if you know what I mean.

We'd love to have 2 or 3 children but since I'm almost 35 and haven't gotten pregnant with our first, that may not happen. At this point, we'll take what we can get. If it works out that we can only have one, then our child will be an only child. We both grew up with siblings and would love that for our child/ren.

I think there are pros and cons to having more than one and some pros and cons to having an only child. I think I read somewhere that you share the most dna with your siblings. You also share the same history. Since my mom passed away 8 years ago, They remember stuff about her that I don't and vice versa. They get the family jokes. And when our dad is being dad, they can roll their eyes right along with me because they understand.

However, I think only children have the benefit of extra resources-time with parents, money, etc. I can see picking up and traveling with one child would be easier. I also think there are benefits to the parents marriage just having one. And happier parents make happier kids.

I was the only child for 8 years. I attribute my creativity, independence and imagination because of it. I hardly ever get bored and it takes a lot for me to ever get lonely.

I didn't miss a thing. Although looking back now, I realize that some of the things I used to do to amuse myself was a little sad. For example, playing Monopoly with my new baby brother! It definitely adds character =)

@venice4504: thank you for commenting. I really don't know what it's like for an only child and just want the best for them. I like hearing that only children aren't bored and had a great childhood w/o siblings. It's hard for me, as someone who has a sibling, to relate.

@MamaMoose I get the getting older thing but my husband and I are preparing early so our child won't have to take care of us as we get older. Yes, death will be difficult but it would be with/without siblings anyways.

As an only child I wish that people would stop thinking that we were lonely growing up! I totally wasn't and I had a lot of friends and was always busy.

As of right now we're stopping at one. I love the aspect of only children and I love how they grow. I couldn't see us having more than one.

My brother is 4 years older than I am, and growing up I always wished I was an only child.....

That being said, we haven't made a decision about more children. I always thought I wanted 2, but now I REALLY don't want to go through pregnancy again!

DH was previously married and has a son from his first marriage. We have him M-F during the day, every other weekend, all summer long, and during holiday breaks. It works out that we have him 65% of the time. When we decided to TTC this became a big factor in our decision of how many children we would want to have. When we spoke to DH's ex-wife, we're friendly, she told us she does not plan on having anymore children. This means that our children will be his only siblings. It made us decide to only have one (plus I don't love pregnancy). We figured that it would give both of them the experience of the others only sibling hopefully creating a very tight bond between them. It also gives them both a only child lifestyle at times and a sibling one.

I'm not an only child but my hubs is. I asked him if he ever wished he had a brother or sister, and he said no. He just always had lots of friends to play with and didn't feel like he missed out at all.

I am an only child and was fine with it growing up. There is no guarantee you will be close to your siblings anyway. DH has a bro living 10 min away and we almost never see him so it's like he's an only child anyway. Of course you have multiple kids in the hopes that they will be close but it will be hard to stomach if that doesn't pan out.

I want my baby to have siblings. I'm close to mine so I think it will be nice, plus like you said it'll be nice just for entertainment purposes to have another kid around all the time.

I do worry though because my mom and her sister don't get along and my hubby's mom and her brother don't get along... it would break my heart if my babies ended up not bff's!

I don't know. My older sister is 10 years older. My younger sister is 3 years younger. I was always an extrovert and made friends very easily. I don't remember playing with my younger sister often. She did hang out with us, but sometimes she stayed home because she didn't like being away from my mom.
My daughter is like me. She makes friends wherever she goes. FH wants one more. I'm fine with it, but I don't think our reasons are to have another sibling for her. In fact, she will probably be 7 or 8 before we even have another child.

I plan to have two or three. I have a really close relationship with my brother and I want my children to experience that. It was great growing up to always have a friend and a playmate, and as an adult I love having someone I can trust and rely on no matter what. But I think being an only child actually becomes most difficult later in life. I have two people in my life right now who are only children who are currently dealing with the sickness and/or passing of their parents. They have both said it's an extremely difficult burden to carry alone. Meanwhile my grandmother is really ill and I know that my mother is only getting through it because she's doing it along with her two sisters.

Do you plan on having just one child or have you stopped at one? If so, do you worry that your child won't get as much as they could if they had a sibling? I'm thinking about chatting with one another on long car rides, someone to play with, someone to stand up for them in school or someone around their age who they can giggle with when their parents are being weird.

Were you an only child? Do you feel like your childhood lacked anything by not having a sibling?
