Then when she for here she loved sucking, she would suck on our fingers to soothe. So I thought anything to make her happy, and bought her a paci. She hated it. I tried different brands and no luck. You can throw out the pacifier, you can't throw out their thumb or fingers. I was a thumb sucker and messed up my adult teeth because I thumb sucked until I was 9 or 10. </p> <p>Ultimately you can get rid of the pacifier whenever you want to, you just have to be prepared for a few rough days while they adjust. They have to re-learn how to soothe themselves.</p> <p>I'd rather avoid the years of thumb or finger sucking by using a pacifier and then later getting rid of it. Instead we had serious finger sucking (me) and thumb sucking (sister) habits. I didn't stop sucking my fingers until I was 9, and my sister didn't stop sucking her thumb until she was at least 5. In the meantime I seriously messed up my adult teeth and was teased relentlessly by kids at school. Sometimes at a young age (1 month) she would use it to help her fall asleep if we held it in her mouth. Baby Y is a big comfort-sucker. At 6.5 months, he definitely does not need it nearly as much as he used to. My nieces and nephews didn't like them, but my LO was crying all the time and the paci really did soothe her when nothing else would. I prefer the paci rather than the finger sucking habit which will take longer to get rid of. They were nearly 3 before my friend was able to get rid of the pacifier and that scared me. RJ as a baby was just super comforted by sucking. He still is at age 2 (he sucks his first 2 fingers on his left hand to fall asleep). He dropped his pacifier on his own when he found his fingers, probably around 3 months... not sure when we will break the finger-sucking habit, but the fact that it's a reliable way to get him to fall asleep on his own... I'd rather just let him!</p> <p>ETA: all babies are different though!
