Oops... definitely something to avoid.

I've done 911 call taking and pocket dials and kids playing with the phone are a huge drain on resources. We'd have nights where 50-60% of our officers are dispatched to false alarms at any given time, because dropped 911 calls take priority over a LOT of things. And then people wonder why it takes hours to make it to their stolen car, or God forbid another actual emergency call that can't get through while I sit there going "Hello? Hello? Is there something we can assist with? Sir? Ma'am? Hello?" to somebody's butt.

Hopefully actually having the police show up will convince your husband not to let her play with his phone!

@anonysquire: Not me! She only does it on DH's phone. I keep on telling him not to let her play with his phone, he doesn't listen! I'm never in the room when it happens, it's all on his watch.

@mrbee: Thanks. We just need to keep our phones away from her. I'm afraid of one day needing that function and it not being available to me. I watch too much Law & Order.

@locavore_mama: I was scared but I was also just so shocked and confused. I thought something had happened in the building not that they were there specifically for me. So weird.

@mrsjazz: Just read that you can change the emergency number to something besides 911!

<< FIXED IT! Okay, not totally. I couldn't get rid of the emergency call button, but by downloading sqllite editor I was able to edit the emergency contact and change the number to NOT 911. I set mine to 12345 so when pressed it just "cannot complete the call as dialed". No more pocket 911 calls. Here's what I did.
Root the phone
Download SuperSU
Download SQLite Editor (costs money, but you really only need it for 5 minutes, you could always REFUND it when you're done, but $5 is a small price to pay for this fix, and you never know when you might need to edit another database.....)
Open SQLite Editor and navigate to data --> data --> com.android.providers.contacts --> databases -->contacts2.db --> emergency
Select the only entry and click edit (pencil icon)
Change the number to whatever you want. I don't advise an actual working number because then you'll be pocket calling them instead, but whatever floats your boat. Hope this helps! >>

Here's that app... maybe worth a shot?

DD did this a couple months ago, but she dialed 911 from our hotel room. Police had to come out and confirm everything was ok. I was mortified.

I'm guilty of doing this as a kid :) my grandma had an alarm system on her house and I'm that person that if you say 'don't touch that shiny red button' guess what I REALLY want to do?! So 5 year old me pushed the button. My grandma made the police officer really scare me haha she said to him 'make sure she remembers this' and he told me that we could go to jail if I pushed it again. I burst into tears and apologized and gave him a hug. Aaaaawkward.

So glad it all worked out okay for you and that you're in a good neighborhood!!!

@mrbee: Maybe it's an Android thing? DH and I both have android phones and on the lock screen there is a little emergency dialer button so that if you do need to make an emergency call you don't have to enter your code. If you hit that button it takes you to a call screen. We both have it but LO only manages to call the police on DH's phone.

The other day, Charlie sent his first successful text (accidentally)... thank goodness it was just some gibberish he sent to Bee! I gotta start hiding my phone too!

@mrbee: Well, she didn't dial 911, but she pressed the "Emergency Call" button and then the "call" button from the locked screen. She's called 911 at least 8x but usually DH will talk to the operator. After the first time I told him he needs to put his phone away...I think he will listen this time.

Oh my God! It's not funny now, but tomorrow it probably will be :)

My LO did this a year ago. I was running around getting stuff together to take her to the doctor and I didn't realize that she was playing with our phone (landline). Well, when I was on the road I got a call from our alarm company saying that officers responded to a call and showed up to our empty house. They wanted to know if we were okay. Oh my God, I was embarrassed. They thought it was our dog since she was sniffing near the phone on the floor and I did NOT correct them - lol.

Oh no! I'm glad it resolved pretty easily at least, since it was the police. Some of those private security companies would have charged you guys, I'm always afraid of pushing the wrong button when I'm at my parents'!

Because LO likes to press the emergency dialer on DHs phone. She did it twice tonight, once DH spoke to the dispatcher and told her that it was our toddler, the second time the call must have gotten disconnected and they dispatched two officers. When they came to my apartment they said they got a call for help and asked if we had been arguing, if I was safe. I went and got DH and LO and told them it was all the work of our toddler--and she gave one of the officers a little high-five. Nice to know that if something really did happen, the police would show up (wasn't like this in my last neighborhood). But now I'm imagining all the little kids who call 911 by accident and the police have to go investigate. Crazy!

We thought we were safe locking our cell phones, but apparently we need to keep them far, far away.
