while i do feel it's strange i guess i'm of the mindset if it doesn't hurt anyone else, who am i to judge?

there is a whole community of people out there who order life like mannequins that they see and treat as real people, even going as far to call them their lovers. normal? no. wrong? i can't say that it is.

@Honeybee: I completely agree with you about taking issue with the photographer. @T.H.O.U.: I guess these ladies feel the same way as your grandmother.

i find it creepy and wonder why anyone would want to have a "baby" that appears to always be in the midst of a crying fit

Soooo....

This past Christmas, my grandmother (who is getting older and starting to pass down family items) gave me a gift. She had 6 sons. She always wanted a daughter. Her first grandchild was another boy, but the second grandchild (me) was a girl. I have always been a bit special to her because of this.

So, this past Christmas, my grandmother gives me a box and starts to cry. She tells me that this was a gift from her brother (they were very close and he has since passed) and she wants me to have it. I open the box and it is an infant baby girl doll. She tells me that this was her "pretend daughter" that she used to dress up and keep neat and tidy (never letting her sons play with her). My grandmother spent her life on her boys, and hardly has anything nice/special for herself except this doll.

Now the doll is no where NEAR lifelike of these dolls, but it is a very nice expensive doll especially for the day in age that it was made (probably 40 years ago). As I mentioned, my grandmother treated this doll like a daughter in some sense. I am not sure yet what I will do with the doll, but I obviously will always treasure and hold onto it.

The dolls don't bother me, but the photographer's "study" discussed in that article bothers me a lot. She's basically exposing unsuspecting strangers to a very raw and emotional experience without their permission and then tries to write it off like there's some kind of value beyond shocking and disturbing people. That bothers me a lot more than the Reborn culture.

@pui: I completely agree!! The first time I came across reborn dolls was on a forum for grieving mothers. Personally it just doesn't make sense to me, but I've never been in that situation, so to them it might.

@anbanan15: The trouble is that in order to truly recover from a loss you eventually have to reach acceptance and learn to live on. These just make these people cling to their trauma.

It makes me very uncomfortable. And I actually think creating a bond to a fake baby would be an unhealthy way to deal with the loss of a child or infertility. But I have never been in their shoes so it's not for me to judge.

I could see how this could possibly be therapeutic for someone who has lost an infant. In a similar way that people get their beloved pet stuffed. However, I do not think these dolls would ever be for me personally.

I think its really kind of creepy. I read a news article not too long ago about a woman in the UK who had like 50 of these dolls and she ignored her own real children so she could "take care of" them.

Wasn't sure which board to put this on, but I just came across this new phenomenon/sub culture:

http://www.fastcodesign.com/1671923/eerie-photos-of-a-subculture-devoted-to-life-like-baby-dolls#1
