My neighbors told me they hate how we "keep to ourselves". I was like..k? We have a fence and privacy trees and LO and I only play in the backyard even though all the other neighbor kids play out front and in the streets. In sorry I was raised that way. I like y neighbors and we chat occasionally, but I have my boundaries and they should never come over just to tell me I need to "lighten up" on my privacy. Our yard is really sloped (to the point of me barely being able to walk down our yard without slipping, let alone little kids!), so we're working on terracing it. Our neighborhood is probably 1/2 fenced, 1/2 open. Two of our neighbors have fences, but we don't, so our yard is 1/2 fenced, but trees clearly offer a 'fence' for the neighbor who doesn't have a fence. So, we thought it was very obvious what our property lines were. A couple months after living there, the neighbor directly behind us (so we share a fence line), comes out to tell us that the back 6 feet of our yard is actually HIS yard, just fyi. Interesting, neighbor, why didn't you put your fence on your property line? "Well, we did, but nothing grows in that space, so it was making our yard look bad, so we moved our fence up 6 ft." AWESOME - so now WE have 6 feet of death that looks like it's in our yard. No one that comes over knows that the 6 feet of hideous mess isn't our yard, because it's clearly on our side of the fence! To make it worse, that's where they store their yard waste! If a big branch falls down, throw it over their fence. Have a bunch of firewood to store? Put it on the other side of the fence. UGH. It is hideous. </p> <p>I told my husband we should build a fence on our property line so there's a weird little bit of limbo land in between our two yards... Dude, those bushes were taller than I am (5'5") and protruded beyond their borders/through the fence. He had nothing better to do than walk around and get in everyone's business. It was nice in the fact that he was like a neighborhood watchdog, but he would actually ring the doorbell and ask you who's car was outside your house earlier that day. He had to know who your visitors were. I mean I can understand gently and gracefully hinting that they'd rather you not install a fence, but to tell you that the previous owners agreed not to is pointless and pushy.</p> <p>Our downstairs neighbor complains a lot. She stays home and studies for grad school while her husband works so any noise we make irritates her to no end. Even though we follow all of the co-op rules about noise and having work done, she still complains if she hears anything above her. She's even accused us of doing construction on days where we were just cleaning! And it's not even like we were making noise late at night, that was at noon on a Sunday! </p> <p>The first time she complained we felt terrible (even though we hadn't broken any rules) and gave her an apology and a bottle of wine. DH went over to our neighbours to see who is responsible for the fence. Turns out it's them, so about a week later I get up early one Saturday morning and see my neighbour standing in our garden admiring his handiwork, which is basically just propping the panels up with huge wooden stakes... on our side!! We have no idea whether this is permanent or just a temporary thing... but we're moving out next month, so don't really care. We called the head of the HOA and asked if there's restrictions on what colors we can paint the outside of the house. They said no real restrictions, just colors found in nature. Ok, in my mind every color can be found in nature, so I just went with what I wanted which was a pretty bright yellow and green for the trim. The main part of the house is white. </p> <p>The next day the head of the HOA called DH and told him we were getting complaints. DH asked if we had to change it and he said no, he was just required to tell us that people were complaining about it. So I had to figure out if I wanted the house colors that I love or my neighbors to like me. </p> <p>We kept the colors..... if people don't like me because I prefer bright colors I don't really care. The street is kinda windey so everyone's backyard kinda backs into each other into a "park like" setting. </p> <p>This is our first summer living here and we have had TWO neighbors (back to back days) come up to us and exclaim that they love the "park like" setting of the backyards in this neighborhood. "gee I hope you're not planning on putting up a fence"</p> <p>We are.</p> <p>We respond that we have thought about it but it won't be till next year if we do.</p> <p>And they "kiddingly" say "oh you know all the original owners agreed to never put up a fence. Ha Ha"</p> <p>Um well then the previous owners should have told us that if it's not "allowed" because otherwise we're putting up a fence.</p> <p>One neighbor is a snow bird and only lives here 5 months out of the year and the other is NEVER outside. We have a family and the big backyard was the big selling point for us. We're not putting a small fence around our pool and only use 1/3 of our yard bc you don't want to look at a fence. </p> <p>What doozies have your neighbors said to you? </p>
