My lo had always thought of them as diapers. He had been day trained for almost a year but wears pullups at night (he is not ready to be dry over night and I am not ready to wake up and take him to pee). He happily pees in them when he wakes up but doesn't pee in underwear.

This had always been the case.

He's huge, and I kinda wish I had switched to pullups as he was getting bigger and didn't like to lie down to be changed anymore.

We used them and I regretted it. I wanted the extra protection so we could leave the house. And daycare didn’t want him in underwear at first. But I think it slowed him down a lot. Once he figured they were essentially diapers, he didn’t try to stop himself from using them that way.

We’re planning to potty train DD this summer and I’m not going to use them at all. We’ll do bottomless/undies and if she gets it she’ll go to school that way and they can deal with accidents.

The only thing I think pull ups are useful for if your LO grows out of diapers (which DS did) but they don’t stay dry at night.

I never saw pull up's as an aid to potty training. We just switched at some point b/c it was easier to change a full blown toddler/preschooler. My 3 year old is not potty trained and therefore in pull ups full time.

We only use at night for sleeping. They are basically diapers but just easier to pull down in the morning to go on potty. I think for us it really just helped with getting him used to the motion of pulling your pants on and off. He knows the difference of diapers and pull ups and doesn't wear diapers anymore because he's "not a baby". He does still pee in them at night--been potty trained for 9 months now, but we don't really push the no nighttime peeing yet.

The daycare we were at required pull ups when we started potty training. A three day method or OCPT would not have worked with my son. Yes, it took longer to train him but I was fine with that. We had to move to a new daycare while he was still potty training, they were fine with us sending him in underwear with lots of extra clothes. I have to admit, after a week there I finally deemed him potty trained for pee (poop took a bit longer). I think being in the underwear definitely helped.

ETA: He is 6 next week and still wears pull ups (pampers underjams) for night. He is starting to finally stay dry a few nights a week.

Only for sleeping. And even then, I know my oldest would pee in it because he knew he could. They are basically just diapers so I don't understand how they work for potty training. My youngest is hating diaper changes so I'm thinking about switching but for ease of use, not training.

We took a really slow and steady approach to potty training, so I voted that we used them regularly. I didn't do a weekend crash course, I just set a timer at home and we would take him to the bathroom every 30 minutes or so. We both worked full-time though, so taking him that often at daycare wasn't really an option. It took longer to train him this way, but by the time we switched to underwear, he never had an accident. I plan to do the same for our daughter who just turned two. I am not about cleaning tons of accident underwear.

We still use at night, and used them while potty training/newly potty training for situations where we might not be able to get to the potty through no fault of the child (flights, long drives, situations where I'd be in a long line like a trip to the DMV) or an accident would be more problematic (like an activity or class) at the very beginning of potty training.

I didn't think they were at all confusing or problematic in these scenarios - they were "special situations" explained to the child as "just in case". But I can see how wearing them daily to daycare or something would be super confusing.

I used huggies diaper pants which are like pull on diapers due to fit and comfort for changing standing up with my giant kid. I didnt use them as a transitional tool, but that being said, i did do more of a potty learning approach with a gradual way. We actually did naked at home for a long time and would just throw on a diaper whenever we went out.

We used them once DD was potty trained for #1 and was having a hard time training for #2. She would ask for one to go in but wore underwear all day and all night.

I wouldn't recommend using them in this manner. It became a crutch for DD and it took wayyyy too long to get her to go on the potty.. and she's now 4.5 and we still have issues (not accident's) but her refusing to go/holding it/getting constipated. (nightmare)

We use them/diapers for naps and bedtime. I actually prefer using diapers, because otherwise you have to completely take the pants and undies off to step into the pullups, and that's annoying. But at some point, my oldest got "too old" for diapers and refused even though she was wetting at night, so we bought pullups for that reason.

We did our version of the 3day method, and pull-ups helped. Said good-bye to diapers, went to undies no pants for 48hr, and it clicked. He is still in a crib and doesn’t always wake up to pee, so pull-ups make him not feel too bad about that and cut down on laundry. He’s probably dry 65% of the time overnight but it’s not worth it yet for those other ones. He was just 2 in December.

We never used them for our oldest. He was in cloth diapers until we did a weekend switch to undies and then he just had diapers for nap/bedtime.
Our daughter is a different beast. She wants the independence so we’re using pull-ups as a way to allow her the freedom to use the potty when she wants without the mess of having accidents. I’ve found them extremely useful in the way of not needing to change her diaper for her and letting her potty without someone right there to get her diaper off. When she shows signs of consistently using the bathroom I think she’ll recognize the difference between underwear and pull-ups.

We used them for in between the diaper and underwear stage - we didn’t actively potty-train my son, we just followed his lead. At a certain point he started asking to use the potty and telling us when he had to go reasonably consistently, so we switched to pull-ups because they were a lot easier to get on and off. He thinks they’re totally different from diapers - when I slip and call it a diaper he gets very offended and corrects me. I actually would have kept him in pull-ups longer because it was a lot easier to not need to know where the closest bathroom was at all times, but daycare told us he was ready. He still wears pull-ups at night, a year later, because he occasionally wakes up wet and I’m lazy.

@newlypregnantlady: my daughter was the opposite- obsessed with public restrooms. I think I’ve been in every single store bathroom in my area. She would ALWAYS ask to use the bathroom when we went to a store or whatever. And forget when we went to a new house. Guaranteed she would pee five times just to check out their bathrooms.

We never used them. We did diapers for naps/overnight for the first month or two after he was trained, then he specifically asked us to stop using them (first naps, then overnight), so we did. We trained right at 3 for what it’s worth.

We stayed in for probably 10 days and my daughter did well! But she really can’t be trusted when we’re out and about. If we’re at someone’s house she’s really good about holding it until we get to a potty. But she’s so scared of public toilets (and is real hot/cold on using them), that it’s just easier to use pull ups. Plus, several of our favorite playgrounds don’t have bathrooms.

I’d say about half of the time she uses a pull-up like a diaper, and half treats it like underwear. But I do make sure to take her to the bathroom once we get somewhere.

She is never dry after nap or night so she’s still in full diapers for those times. So right now I’m not really calling her potty trained, she’s just using fewer diapers. Honestly I feel like she’s doing fine. I’m trying not to push her because she’s truly scared of public restrooms.

We did the 3 day method but used pull ups for naps and bedtime, and for very long car rides. She would still sometimes pee in them while she was sleeping but refused to pee in them in the car, even when she was crying because she had to go so bad and we couldn’t get to a bathroom right away.

If I remember right, I think I used them as diapers for a while. It was kinda pre-potty training in that I’d get her to sit on the potty at times, but wasn’t hard-core training. Once that started it was just pullups at night. The nice thing about pull-ups as diapers is that if there’s no accidents, then you just keep using them and so much easier to change. As LO got better at going to the potty, she would go long stretches using the one pull-up.

The kind of pullup made a difference to DS1. We only use Pampers pull-ups - they are stretchy and soft and feel much more like undies over Huggies, which definitely looked/felt more like diapers. DS2 is in diapers and he definitely makes a point of saying HE does not wear diapers, he wears pullups.

But DS1 has only worn pull-ups for naptime and overnight and long car rides. He is in undies the rest of the time. Daycare preferred it that way as well - they didn't feel like pullups were helpful in training and its more work for the teachers to deal with over diapers apparently.

I actually posted about accidents in training pants on here and got a pretty straightforward: well, she’s having accidents because of the training pants. So true! If we don’t take them off right away in the morning, she will pee in them. If she has them on during the day, she’ll pee in them 75% of the time.

We used pull ups at night for a long time with DD1. I think until almost 3, and she was trained at 24 months.

We didn’t use them in the car. If I had a 45 minute commute I think I would. For a road trip I wouldn’t unless we had to be somewhere at a specific time, OR if she was going to fall asleep. We recently flew with DD2 and she had started having more accidents (I think because of being sick) and despite DH’s protests I refused to put training pants on her because they always set us back. We just took her to the bathroom a lot and she was fine.

We are in the middle of it so I can't say what worked for us, but we just don't have multiple days at home without outings. We live in the middle of no where and she (and I) go crazy if we are stuck here. Plus, with social workers and visits and various other people in our house, we can't realistically do full time naked. So we use pull ups to run errands, go out to play outside when it's not warm enough for a skirt, and when social workers are here. She does know the difference and still tries to go on the potty, but she isn't fully trained her so still uses the pull up if I don't remind her or if she's distracted. So we are on the slow potty training track I guess.

I had heard that pull-ups are too much like diapers and they're not very useful during potty training, etc. But then I was searching the boards and saw lots of mentions of pull-ups. So maybe they're "unhelpful" in theory and helpful in reality? Unsure. So, did you use pull ups, AND IF SO, in what situations and for how long?
